continent in the world both in size and
population.
2. Islam is the dominant religion in
Africa. Christianity is the second.
Arabic is also the most widely-spoken
language in Africa.
3. Africa has the shortest coastline
despite being the second largest
continent in the world.
5. 4. Africa is the most centrally located
continent in the world. Both the prime
meridian (0 degrees longitude), and the
equator (0 degrees latitude) cut across it.
5. Nigeria has the highest population (154.7
million people) in Africa. This represents
18% of Africa's total population.

animals both come from Africa. They are the
giraffe and African elephant, respectively.

spoken in Africa and each of them have
different dialects while Arabic is the
language that is most widely spoken in the
African continent.

7. FEATURES OF THE
TRADITIONALAFRICAN MUSIC
• YODELLING
It is vocal technique commonly used by
Africans. It is characterized by a quick change
of voice from normal to a falsetto.
• USE OF DIFFERENT SOUNDS
Different kinds of sound are produce by African
singers in their performance. They may hum, shout,
or whisper. They make short, deep and hoarse
sounds. They may even imitate animal sound.
8. • PARTICIPATIVE MUSIC-
MAKING
Perhaps, the most glaring difference
between the music making of African
and westerners is the fact that African
are not mere spectators but active
participants. They don’t just listen; they
perform.
9. • OTHERS FORM OF EXPRESSION
When Africans perform, they don’t just
sing. Their musical expression is
accompanied by other forms of
expression such as props, crafts,
costumes, Drama, Sculpture and most
especially dancing. Music for them, is a
great opportunity to have social
interaction and to share their lives in the
community.
10. PURPOSE OF MUSIC OF AFRICAN
MUSIC
• To offer something to their Gods.
• To communicate important sentiments
and messages;
• To mark occasions such as birth,
marriage, puberty and death
• To protest against a ruler, relative, or tax
collector;
• To educate their young ;
