My Name, Business – work with marketing executives and marketing consultantsHappy to be here! Poll attendees: How many Job search, Career Change, 1 minute intros , expectMy 1 Minute – Story Listener: constantly, in stories – our mind, others, conversations – fact/fiction!YOU will notice that I ask a fair amount of questions. I believe life is more interesting when we stay in the process of inquiry ?If it isn’t fun – don’t do it!Did you come here for some fun today?Quick overview, power of stories ,Fun Exercise, Q&A, 35 minutes
What is about Stories that – influence positive change?More importantly, what causes us to leave our stories behind during job search process? Here is the big one: What causes us to tell stories, unconsciously, and not realize the impact? What happens when we craft our stories, practice them and deliver pieces of them in conversation?
Does anyone dis-agree on the importance of crafting our stories, and tell them with intention?Stories spice up challenging conversations and add levity when things are not going as well as one would like..
Ask yourself – where in your job search or Career Development do you need to include your stories?Where or when are stories not appropriate?
Think for a moment…What is your “Current Narrative” that is creating a Story about your Career? What is the impact of That Story on Yourself and Others?_____________________________________________What influences your to be especially positive and happy? Are others typically involved? What is their contribution to Your Story?
The process of story telling can get complex. For this brief workshop we will focus on simplicity.Where do you start the Beginning, middle or the end?Why in that order? Why does the story need to define the opportunity/struggle and what was overcome? Why do some kinds of stories (like your resume) need to have credibility. What is important about compelling facts or statistics ?Why do people want to know about - Your journey?Remember Dorothy and her trip to Kansas?Do all stories need a hero?Who is the hero in the stories that you tell about your work?Reference: Nancy Duarte’s Resonate, The Hero is always the audience.
We’re crafting the first piece of the Exercise – on your greatest work experienceWhenWhereWhoWhatHowWhat
At which moment – did you recognize you were proposing a new change? How did you unveil the Surprise? What was your method of engaging them to listen to you? What was the New Bliss (The Next Big Thing) that you proposed?
Now it’s your turn to Practice – Telling Your Story
We will devote 15 minutes total – you will need to focus to stay on time.5 Minutes to Craft your Story5 minutes for each of you to tell your story________________________________________ Select a partner and decideWho is Partner A and B – Who is Partner A, B?Who will be your time keeper?Who will go first?Support each other for 5 minutes to craft your Story
Who would like to share their story? What did you learn from crafting and telling your story? What did you learn from listening to other people’s story?
Where else can you tell your stories?Does this motivate you to keep crafting and practicing your story?
What happens when others tell our storiesWhen we connect others – we often need to tell parts of their story to be effective.Groom your boss to tell your story – they typically will enhance it!
What are your next steps?Do you need to improve your networking system and charisma? How important is self awareness and executive presence? How well do you know and work with your Stand Out Strengths?
