- Let’s define what I mean by a Strategic Check Up or Strategic Assessment Like a doctor’s visit, it’s simply a way of taking stock of the health or our organization Are we stuck in old ways of doing things? Is there a better way? Here are some things a strategic assessment will help you do Create a plan for moving your nonprofit in a direction so you can start focusing on your goals Help you clean out unwieldy processes that build up over years Identify where training or technology may help your organization Technology system Many nonprofits have what we call an Association Management or Donor management system or an AMS Who know what I mean when I say AMS Typically is the main piece of software at an organization where all the information on your members, donor and other constituents But “technology systems” mean all of the different pieces of software you have Like Excel or Word, or Office 365 (do you know about Office 365) Technology systems mean the cloud storage or on-premise options you use to house and back up all the data you collect on your members Your phone systems, the methods you use to post and manage Social media account What are some of the systems you use in your organization? Are there special kinds of software used in your world?
- Here are the six signs we think a Strategic Assessment might be a good idea
- Who has a strategic plan or annual objectives they are working from? How did you create that plan? Who was involved? How often do you update it? Are you really able to work on your goals? What keeps you from doing that?
- Sometimes you have outgrown you database (apartment and house living) How many of you find yourself blaming the technology or vendor? What are some of those situations? Do you ever try to step back and see if you were to change your processes or business rules that things could be different Ex: BOMA – Dallas based association ready to throw out their software Ex: TSAE or AARC (needed to clean up data, get training … get their house in order ; unwind years of layers and complexities)
- Departments have personalities, just like people Strong departments Break down barriers Company first, then department Redundancies and Impact of processes on other business units Do any of you find departments in your organization controlling the flow and processes of the organization? Are all areas on the same page as related to the strategic goals vs. their departmental goals?
- How often have you said, “There has got to be a better way?” or “This is taking a long time - Give me an example of something that doesn’t seem to work for you - What unwieldy process do you have?
- Something about sitting in a room together opens minds and hearts Do you ever try to get your staff together to talk through operational challenges? What happens? I don’t mean 5 minutes, real time like a day or two to dig deep and really analysis is area of the business
- Sometime you just need someone outside of the organization to send a message to the Board Like mom telling you something and a stranger telling you. You believe the stranger.
