4. Before a sound system can be
designed, the installed space
must be evaluated:
• What are the room dimensions?
• What are the construction
materials in the space?
• What are the acoustics
like in the space?
• Are there noise restrictions?
• What kinds of activities will
take place in the space?
• In what locations will the
audience sit?

1. Understand the Space
A well designed sound system will
deliver good sound to all listeners
at an appropriate volume. Using

pattern, or placing speakers too
far apart can create dead spots
or unevenness in the space.

operate. Some important questions
to answer when specifying an
amplifier are:
• What are the power requirements
of the specified speaker?
• What is the total impedance of
each speaker channel?
• What kind of imaging, such as
stereo or surround, does the
system require?
