CAREER HISTORY
2008 – Present day SENIOR SCIENTIST (managerial role)
I am responsible for the management of the Inorganic Chemistry department within the general chemistry
department. I am the line manager directly responsible for nine staff (indirectly 20+). To ensure the efficient
running of the general chemistry laboratory to meet customer turn round times requirements, along with
quality and health and safety requirements. To develop the team to enable the staffs career progression.
Provide direction and leadership for the team as well as involvement in senior management duties across the
scientific centre.
Key Responsibilities for my position
Managerial
Ensure laboratory is properly resourced (both equipment and staff) for the required workload
Manage the allocation of resources so that the laboratory meets its service level agreement
Manage holiday authorisation,sickness reporting/return to work administration and preliminary disciplinary
procedures
Ensure health and safety requirements for the laboratory are adhered to
Promote and facilitate good working relationships within the laboratory and take an active role in continually
improving laboratory efficiency
Assist the laboratory manager in budget reviews and ensure the laboratory stays within set revenue and capital
limits
Ensure corporate policies (purchasing, terms and conditions of employment etc) are adhered to
Interface with UKAS, DWI and similar bodies as required
Involved in doing performance appraisals for my relevant staff on a yearly basis
Interviewing for staff in my area of responsibility
Hold regular team meetings
Personal
Ability to manage and work with staff
Ability to work as a pro-active member of the management team
Good interpersonal skills to enable job holder to motivate staff individually and as a team to achieve the
desired goal
Good technical communication skills to enable job holder to train and transfer knowledge to otherstaff
Operational
Routine analysis of water and related samples
Quality standards – ensure that the standards is applicable to the analysis being undertaken and that the
analysis is compliant to the quality standards
Review methods, COSHH and risk assessments to ensure they are up to date
Plan and oversee or participate in method re-design and performance testing
Assist the customer liaison team in answering customer queries
Review development in current technology and make recommendations as to its application or impact on
working practises within the laboratory
Be aware of current and pending regulatory requirements that may have implications for the laboratory. Make
recommendations on how the laboratory should meet those requirements on behalf of the company
Technical
Extensive practical laboratory skills and knowledge
Through understanding of all the health and safety requirements for the laboratory
Experience with the windows operating environmental and MS office suites
Extensive experience in the underlying principles of a range of laboratory systems
1994 – 2008 SENIOR SCIENTIST (ROTA-COORDINATOR)
KEY SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Deputising for Senior Scientist in their absence and ensuring the effective running of the team.
Proficient in the use of Word, Excel and databases including Scientific Systems software.
Training of staff in analytical procedures.
Ensuring my analytical methods are validated and performance tested
Monitoring quality control data and acting on any problems
Reviewing methods and maintaining all the associated documentation.
Preparation of weekly work rota and delegation of work.
Development of new analytical methods and written procedures to UKAS/DWI/MCERTS specifications.
Conducting annual appraisals for staff
Team recruitment
Various analytical duties specialising in inorganic chemistry and trace metals.
Research and development of new techniques.
Problem investigation and project work.
In addition to my duties as an analytical scientist,the rota co-ordinatorposition carries additional responsibilities.
Heading a multi-disciplinary team of scientists.
Ensuring the efficient running of the work rota.
Assigning priorities to work.
Ensuring that the team adheres to quality and health and safety procedures and that all necessary records
are maintained.
Check exception reports, reschedule tests and report significant results to operational staff.
Ensure the security of the laboratory, the safety of staff and the safeguarding of all equipment by
making the site secure at all times.
Organising and co-ordinating the necessary cover and work for samples arriving outside normal working
hours and ensure the laboratory crisis plan is put into operation when necessary.
Maintaining a working knowledge of applicable legislation and regulatory requirements.
I have been involved in recruitment and selection and performance appraisals regularly over the last few years and
I really enjoy this aspect of my work.
I have always demonstrated a positive approach to my career. I have been involved in educational activities with GCSE
and A level students,giving presentations,tours ofthe laboratories and discussing the role chemistry plays in Wessex
Water.
