Singapore
Tackling
Challenges of
Education and
School
Problems with Education and School
• There is no standard education system in
Singapore before 1960. Educations were mainly
provided by the ethnic and religious group. With
a standard education system, different ethnic
groups can interact with each other as it let one
another understand each others culture. It can
also help in Singapore’s future development as it
allows the students to be educated before they
joins the workforce
Measures to Solve Education and
School
• In 1959, the PAP government start integrating
different educational system. The government
introduced flag raising ceremony and pledge
taking ceremony daily in every schools
regardless of race, language or religion to
promote organization in the people
• The students must also attend Civics Education.
The PAP government implemented the first 5
year plan to reorganize the education system. It
aims to increase the level of knowledge amongst
the Singaporeans
• The education facilities is improved.
• There would be an equal treatment for all the
language stream.
• There would be a stress on the study of
Mathematics, Science and Technical
• The Malay language would be made the national
Language.
• A large-scale of teacher recruitment was carried
out to increase the number of teaching
professionals and teachers-in-training
• The PAP government made the bilingualism
policy compulsory in education. The bilingualism
policy made the primary school students learn
English and their Mother Tongue. Learning
English would enable them to communicate in
the future as English is the universal language.
Learning their Mother Tongue would allow the
students maintain their ethnic roots and not let it
vanish. The increase demand of industrialization
caused the shift in the education focus, from
academic to technical and vocational training
Impact
• Education prepares the young Singaporeans
with the important technical skills to journey on
the opportunities brought about by the
globalization of the economy.
• The education system will not be fixed. It will
always change so that it can meet the demand
of the changing world
• Education helps improve social relation among
different racial communities
