LEARNING OBJECTIVE
After going through this
lesson, learners are
expected to change
fractions to lowest forms.
Reducing fractions to lowest terms involves division, thus
you will need your prior knowledge on division. In this
lesson, you will learn how to change fraction to its lowest
term by dividing both the numerator and denominator
with their Greatest Common Factor (GCF). You will be
reminded also of the different methods of getting the GCF.
Examine these figures.

Which fraction is in lowest form?
We can reduce a fraction to its lowest term by dividing the
numerator and the denominator with their Greatest
Common Factor (GCF) using any of the following methods:

QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW.
Our solar system’s eight planets come in two classifications: smaller rocky planets with solid ground
(Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) and larger gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune).
QUESTIONS:
1. What fraction represents the number of small rocky planets
with solid grounds?
2. What fraction represents the number of planets which
belong to larger gas giants?
3. How do you express your answers in numbers 1 and 2 in
their lowest forms?
Earth's surface is covered with about 70 percent of water and
30 percent of land.
QUESTIONS:
1. What fraction of Earth's surface is covered by
water?
2. What fraction of Earth's surface is covered by land?
3. How do you express your answers in numbers 1
and 2 in their lowest forms?
With an average of roughly 60
percent, most of the human body
is water. The amount of water in
the body changes slightly with
age, gender, and hydration levels.
QUESTIONS:
1. What fraction represents the average
percentage of water in the human body?
2. How do you express your answer in
number 1 in its lowest form?

  • 3. What fraction is represented by each figure below?
  • 4. What fraction is represented by each figure below? 2 ------ 4 3 ------ 6 4 ------ 8 1 ------ 2
  • 5. What can you notice on the shaded regions of the figures below? 2 ------ 4 3 ------ 6 4 ------ 8 1 ------ 2
  • 6. Let's look closer to the given figures. 2 ------ 4 1 ------ 2
  • 7. Let's look closer to the given figures. 1 ------ 2 3 ------ 6
  • 8. Let's look closer to the given figures. 1 ------ 2 4 ------ 8
  • 10. Even if a fraction looks different from another fraction, they may actually represent the same amount only that one of the fractions has reduced terms compared to the other.
  • 12. CHANGING FRACTIONS TO CHANGING FRACTIONS TO LOWEST FORMS LOWEST FORMS
  • 13. LEARNING OBJECTIVE After going through this lesson, learners are expected to change fractions to lowest forms.
  • 14. Reducing fractions to lowest terms involves division, thus you will need your prior knowledge on division. In this lesson, you will learn how to change fraction to its lowest term by dividing both the numerator and denominator with their Greatest Common Factor (GCF). You will be reminded also of the different methods of getting the GCF.
  • 15. Examine these figures. What fraction represents each figure?
  • 18. We can reduce a fraction to its lowest term by dividing the numerator and the denominator with their Greatest Common Factor (GCF) using any of the following methods: Listing Method Prime Factorization Continuous Division
  • 19. Example: Reduce to its lowest form. 2 ------ 8 In order to reduce the given fraction, identify first the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of its numerator and denominator. Factors of 2: 1 and 2 Factors of 8: 1, 2, 4, and 8 Common Factors of 2 and 8: 1 and 2 Greatest Common Factor of 2 and 8: 2
  • 20. 2 ------ 8 Next, divide the numerator and denominator of the given fraction by their GCF. 2 2 1 ------ 4
  • 21. 2 ------ 8 Therefore, we can say that the lowest form of 1 ------ 4 is equal to
  • 22. Example: Reduce to its lowest form. 3 ------ 9 In order to reduce the given fraction, identify first the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of its numerator and denominator. Factors of 3: 1 and 3 Factors of 9: 1, 3, and 9 Common Factors of 3 and 9: 1 and 3 Greatest Common Factor of 3 and 9: 3
  • 23. 3 ------ 9 Next, divide the numerator and denominator of the given fraction by their GCF. 3 3 1 ------ 3
  • 24. 3 ------ 9 Therefore, we can say that the lowest form of 1 ------ 3 is equal to
  • 25. Example: Reduce to its lowest form. 5 ------ 20 In order to reduce the given fraction, identify first the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of its numerator and denominator. Factors of 5: 1 and 5 Factors of 20: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, and 20 Common Factors of 5 and 20: 1 and 5 Greatest Common Factor of 5 and 20: 5
  • 26. 5 ------ 20 Next, divide the numerator and denominator of the given fraction by their GCF. 5 5 1 ------ 4
  • 27. 5 ------ 20 Therefore, we can say that the lowest form of 1 ------ 4 is equal to
  • 28. Example: Reduce to its lowest form. 9 ------ 27 In order to reduce the given fraction, identify first the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of its numerator and denominator. Factors of 9: 1, 3, and 9 Factors of 27: 1, 3, 9, and 27 Common Factors of 9 and 27: 1, 3, and 9 Greatest Common Factor of 9 and 27: 9
  • 29. 9 ------ 27 Next, divide the numerator and denominator of the given fraction by their GCF. 9 9 1 ------ 3
  • 30. 9 ------ 27 Therefore, we can say that the lowest form of 1 ------ 3 is equal to
  • 31. Example: Reduce to its lowest form. 6 ------ 16 In order to reduce the given fraction, identify first the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of its numerator and denominator. Factors of 6: 1, 2, 3, and 6 Factors of 16: 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 Common Factors of 6 and 16: 1 and 2 Greatest Common Factor of 6 and 16: 2
  • 32. 6 ------ 16 Next, divide the numerator and denominator of the given fraction by their GCF. 2 2 3 ------ 8
  • 33. 6 ------ 16 Therefore, we can say that the lowest form of 3 ------ 8 is equal to
