3. 1. To Bear Witness to Christ’s Identity
Jn.1:31-34 John the Baptist
I did not know Him (Jesus); but that He should be revealed
to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.
And John bore witness, saying: ”I saw the Spirit
descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained
upon Him.
I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with
water said to me, “Upon whom you see the Spirit
descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes
with the Holy Spirit.” And I have seen and testified that this
is the Son of God.

4. 2. To Glorify Jesus
Jn.16:13 Jesus to his disciples
He will glorify Me, for
He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
All things that the Father has are Mine.
Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and
declare it to you.

5. 3. To Convict the World
John 16:8-11 Jesus to his disciples
And when He (the Spirit) has come, He will convict the world
of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
 Of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
 Of righteousness because I go to My Father and you see
me no more.
 And of judgment, because the ruler of this world is
judged.

6. Jn.3:6-7 Jesus to Nicodemus
That which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which
is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I
said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
Jn.4:24 Jesus to the woman at the well
God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must
worship in spirit and truth.
4. To Initiate the New Birth and True Worship in Men

7. 5. To Strengthen and Help Those who Are Born Again
Jn.14:16-18 Jesus to his disciples regarding the Spirit
I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper
(Comforter), that He may abide with you forever,
I will not leave you orphans;
I will come to you.
(Spirit in us = Christ in us)
even (i.e.) the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive,
because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know
Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

8. 6. To Guide them into Truth and Foretell Future Events
Jn.16:12-13 Jesus to his disciples
I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot
bear them now…
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He
will guide you into all truth [ultimately, the cannon of Scripture]
for He will not speak on His own authority,
but whatever He hears He will speak;
AND he will tell you things to come.

9. 7. To Produce Rivers of Living Water Flowing from Them
Jn.7:37-38 Jesus to Pharisees & Jews
If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He
who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of
his heart will flow rivers of living water.
Jn.7:39 cont’d
This He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those
believing in Him would receive; for
the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus
was not yet glorified.

10. John 1:33
Upon whom you see the Spirit descending…
This is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
At Pentecost

11. THE SPIRIT IS VISIBLE BY HIS FRUIT…
Galatians 5:22-23

12. Gal.5:17
The flesh lusts against the Spirit,
and the Spirit against the flesh;
and these are contrary to one another,
so that you do not do the things that you wish.

T – Transformation (renewing of the mind)

16. Rom.12:2
Do not be conformed to this world…
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,
that you may prove what is that good and
acceptable and perfect will of God.
T – Transformation (Renew your mind!)

17. Rom.8:29
For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be
conformed to the image of His Son, that He might
be the firstborn among many brethren.
C – Conformation (Take on the image of Jesus!)

18. Gal.5:22
And the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy peace,
longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
A – Affirmation (Bear fruit!)
Gal.5:25
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

19. NO FRUIT OUTSIDE OF CHRIST
John 15:5 Jesus said:
I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me,
and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do
nothing.
Gal.2:20 Paul said:
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live,
but Christ who lives in me.
