What investment opportunities do
Galena Asset Management’s
commodity funds look for?
Investing in commodities is a long-
standing story, but today it is more
about appropriate specialization. Our
investment solutions focus on the
metals, minerals and energy sectors
across the liquidity spectrum.
Each fund seeks to exploit opportunities
in relation to its investment style. In
hedge funds we focus both on
directional and relative value strategies
in metals and energy derivative
markets. Similarly on the long only side,
although our aim is to outperform a
benchmark. Our commodity credit
business considers opportunities in the
commodity trade finance space focusing
on bank syndications. Finally, the
private equity resource team considers
long-term opportunities in the junior
mining space.
What value could commodities offer
to a private wealth portfolio?
Investing in commodities usually
involves high levels of volatility and
draw do wns as inv estors seek
directionality.
Traditionally some investors have
benefited from the strong diversification
effect of commodities but as
correlations dislocate, we advise them
to focus more on relative value
approaches for better long-term
adjusted returns.
How do you evaluate the
management of the companies you
invest in?
We have frequently enhanced or
replaced management in companies and
have taken an active stance in assisting
executives on day-to-day financial and
technical issues.
Understanding both ends of the
commodity value added chain enables
us to assess value in ways which go
beyond the traditional models.
Understanding the complex issues
associated with global commodity
trading enables us to gauge manage-
ment skills in relation to rapidly
changing circumstances and find
replacements if needed.
In the current environment our portfolio
companies benefit greatly from our solid
technical expertise and a well-
established banking network.
What risk management or
mitigation tips could you give to
private wealth managers?
In certain markets conditions it might
be tempting to be very tolerant and
compromise on discipline, but the
outcome can be disastrous both
psychologically and in terms of business
solidity. It is vital to uphold portfolio
diversification and pre-defined stop
losses independently from short-term
market factors.
Any final thoughts?
In the current environment investors
are seeking opportunities but remain
apprehensive of unforeseen risks. It is
paramount for wealth managers to
partner up with investment houses that
