This document discusses the concept of wanting just $3 worth of God - enough to feel comforted but not enough to truly transform one's life or require obedience to God's will. It notes that while we want salvation, we don't want submission to God as our Lord. The document encourages seeking God's will through studying the Bible directly, having an open mind to obey what is taught, and being willing to serve God rather than just wanting comfort or benefits from Him.

$3 of god
1. $ 3 Wor t h of God, Please
Mark 10:44-45
44 And whoever of you desires to be first
shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of
Man did not come to be served, but to serve,
and to give His life a ransom for many."
2. Introduction
●
●
●
This lesson is about the attitude of
serving.
Here is a hard truth – We do not want to
be servants. We want to be served.
The TV ads tell us –
–
Have it your way.
–
Do yourself a favor.
–
You owe it to yourself.
–
You deserve a break today.
–
Your way, right away.
4. No Demands
●
Wilber Rees wrote - “I would like to buy $3
worth of God, please. Not enough to
explode my soul or disturb my sleep, but
just enough to equal a cup of warm milk
or a snooze in the sunshine. I don't want
enough of Him to make me love a black
man or pick beets with a migrant. I want
ecstasy, not transformation; I want the
warmth of the womb not a new birth. I
want a pound of the Eternal in a paper
sack. I would like $3 worth of God,
please.”
5. No Demands
●
Charles Swindoll then added, “That's it.
We don't want to dump God entirely, just
keep Him at a comfortable distance.
Three dollars is sufficient. A sack full,
nothing more. Just enough to keep my
guilt below the threshold of pain, just
enough to guarantee escape from the
eternal flames. But certainly not enough
to make me nervous – to start nit-picking
my lifestyle. Enough is enough!”
6. No Demands
We want a Savior, but we don't want a
Lord.
We want a crown, but we don't want a
cross.
We want a harvest, but we don't want to
sow any seed.
We want to go to Heaven, but we don't
want to go to church.
We want to grow spiritually, but we don't
want to feed on his word.
7. No Demands
We want Hollywood to "clean up its act,"
but we don't want to stop watching.
We want the right to pray, even in school,
but we don't want to pray.
We want the 10 Commandments posted,
but we don't want to live by their moral
principles.
We want to love God, but we don't want to
abhor sin.
We want to die the death of the righteous,
8. No Standard of Conduct
●
●
“God has a standard of conduct which
represents His will. But He does not
demand strict compliance with His
standard to be accepted by Him.
Otherwise that does away with grace.”
(Taught at a ladies day)
I realize that today there is a different
attitude toward God, Jesus, Bible,
religion, faith, morality, family values,
etc.
9. Lessons to Learn
●
●
1 God has a standard of conduct
James 1:25 But he who looks into the
perfect law of liberty and continues in it,
and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of
the work, this one will be blessed in what
he does.

2 His standard is His Will
Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to
Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom
of heaven, but he who does the will of My
Father in heaven.

2 His standard is His Will
3 We are expected to comply
John 12:48 He who rejects Me, and does
not receive My words, has that which
judges him--the word that I have spoken
will judge him in the last day.
12. Lessons to Learn
●
●
4 Compliance is strict
Matthew 23:23 Woe to you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe
of mint and anise and cummin, and have
neglected the weightier matters of the
law: justice and mercy and faith. These
you ought to have done, without leaving
the others undone.
13. Lessons to Learn
●
●
5 We are saved by grace
Ephesians 2:8-10 8 For by grace you
have been saved through faith, and that
not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9
not of works, lest anyone should boast.
10 For we are His workmanship, created
in Christ Jesus for good works, which
God prepared beforehand that we should
walk in them.
14. Lessons to Learn
●
●
6 Obedience does not eliminate grace
Romans 5:20-21 20 Moreover the law
entered that the offense might abound.
But where sin abounded, grace
abounded much more, 21 so that as sin
reigned in death, even so grace might
reign through righteousness to eternal
life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
15. Lessons to Learn
●
●
6 Obedience does not eliminate grace
Romans 6:1-2 1 What shall we say then?
Shall we continue in sin that grace may
abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we
who died to sin live any longer in it?
