lung abscess.

Micro organisms such as-

4. Klebsiella

Risk factors
– Aspiration of oropharyngeal and gastric secretions.
– Necrotizing pneumonia.
– Alcoholism
– General anaesthesia
– Penetrating chest trauma

Medical treatment
– Antibiotic therapy – Penicillin
– Bronchodilators - Aminophylline
– Physiotherapy
– Postural drainage
– Artificial oxygen

Nursing management
– Assess the followings
 Vital sign of the patient.
 General health status
 Breathing pattern
 Severity of clinical manifestations
 Anxiety level

– Provide comfortable fowlers position
– Administer all the medicines as prescribed by doctor using 5R rules.
– Provide chest physio therapy as prescribed by doctor.
– Perform postural drainage.
– Increase fluid intake of the patient if it is not contraindicated. It is helpful in
removing the secretions.
– Perform tracheobronchial suctioning to clear the airway.
– Provide frequent oral hygiene.
