                   Identifying Strategies
What strategies are most likely to help my students achieve
                     the goals and outcomes?
Strategies - my teacher actions (eg use of learning intentions), utilising ICTs (eg
                             digital camera, Photo Story 3)

                                                     Gathering
      Goal Setting Evidence & Reflection
What is important, given What assessment approaches will measure
where I am at? the prioritised outcomes? What happened
What is important, given as a result of the teaching, and what are
where my students are at? the implications for future teaching?
Evidence - student voice, photographs, rubrics, reflections
Goal 1 - Increased Capability
This evidence tells us that students learn best when teachers:
            Create a supportive learning environment
            Encourage reflective thought and action
Enhance the relevance of new learning
            Facilitate shared learning
Make connections to prior learning and experience
            Provide sufficient opportunities to learn
            Integrate ICT

Rationale
                                                       New Zealand Curriculum Page 36 - 38
Goal 1 - Increased Capability
Goal 1
• Goal 1 is all about further developing your teaching - focussing in on
your teacher actions that promote student learning

• Our first ‘teacher action’ focus is a cluster-wide focus on teachers
providing opportunities for their students to help decide learning
 intentions and success criteria

• First step is to ask yourself where you are at with using learning
 intentions in your classroom....
Goal 1 - Question

• Possible research questions:
  - What strategies will I use to help my
    students;
     - be aware of learning intentions and
         success criteria in an activity?
eg form clear learning intentions and
             success criteria before engaging in
an activity, discuss these with the
students, display them on the wall
             etc
     - help decide the learning intentions and
         success criteria in an activity
eg class discussion about the aim of
an activity and have the students
share their ideas about the success
             criteria
Goal 1 - Gathering Evidence

• Ask yourself - How am I going to
 provide evidence that my students
 have increased opportunities to help
 decide learning intentions and
 success criteria?
  - eg success criteria posters,
    photographs of learning intentions
    being displayed in the classroom,
    recordings of students talking about
the success criteria in an activity,
    assessment rubrics (that utilise LOs
    and SCs), annotations of student
    comments etc
Goal 2 - ICT Integration

Schools should explore not only how ICT can supplement traditional
ways of teaching but also how it can open up new and different
                                ways of learning.

Rationale
                                                 New Zealand Curriculum Page 38
Goal 2 - Integrate ICT
Goal 2

• Goal 2 is about providing your students with
opportunities to utilise ICTs to enhance their
learning. The cluster-wide focus is about using
ICTs for communication in a literacy
 context.

• During ICT practicums you have been
exploring a range of tools (ie digital camera,
Picasa, iPhoto, Photo Story 3, iMovie) and
 developing your ICT skills.

• Your first step is to ask yourself where you are
at with your ICT skills. The second step is to
consider the needs of your students. Think
about how aspects of what you have learned
during the practicum could be utilised to
 enhance learning in your classroom
Goal 2 - Question

• Research Question:
  - What tools and strategies will I use to
help my students use ICTs for
   Communication? eg:
     - taking digital photos to communicate a
         message (visual language)
     - enhancing photos in iPhoto or Picasa
     - compiling a digital text in Photo Story or
         iMovie

NB You may decide to break the
process of creating a digital text
down and involve the students in just
1-2 stages - eg sequencing the
             images and/or recording the
             narration
Goal 2 - Gathering Evidence

• Ask yourself - How am I going to
provide evidence that I am providing
 my students with increased
 opportunities to use ICTs for
 communication
  - eg samples of digital work, digital
photos taken by the children, digital
texts, photos of the children working
    on their digital texts etc
  - evidence may also involve sharing
    the children’s work during an
    assembly
Goal 3 - Professional Collaboration
“Opportunities to process new learning with others' was one of ten
key principles that have a positive impact on student outcomes.”

"Collegial interaction that is focused on student outcomes can help
teachers integrate new learning into existing practice."

'Teacher Professional Learning and Development' 2008
                                                                       Helen Timperley

Rationale
Goal 3

• Cluster Sharing Sessions

  - In small groups, teachers to share and
    discuss learning:
     - Talking about the research focus, what
         has been implemented
     - Share evidence of implementation (eg
         photos, work samples, digital texts,
         student voice annotations etc)
     - Reflecting on what happened as a result
         of your actions
     - Identifying next steps for your learning
