WHAT IS COMMUNICATION
 Communication is the activity of conveying meaningful
information. It requires a sender, a message, and an
intended recipient.
BARRIERS OF COMMUNICATION
Barrier is an obstacle in a place that prevents us from
completing certain tasks.
Communication barriers can be defined as the aspects or
conditions that interfere with effective exchange of information,
ideas or thoughts.
 Unplanned distortion during the communication resulting in
the receiver obtaining a different message than that sent by
the sender is referred to as barriers in communication.
BARRIERS OF COMMUNICATION (cont.)
 Every obstacle that stands between the sender and the
receiver.
 Also called as “Noise” or “distortions” in communication.
TYPES OF BARRIERS
 Physical Barrier
 Cultural Barrier
 Language Barrier
 Emotional Barrier
 Gender Barrier
 Organizational Barrier
 Perceptual Barrier
PHYSICAL BARRIERS
Physical barriers relate to disturbance in the immediate situation,
which can interfere in the course of an effective communication
FACTORS CAUSING PHYSICAL BARRIER
 Defects in media/Channel (Network Facilities • Mechanical Breakdowns)
 Distraction in environment (Noise, outside disturbance, bad handwriting/typing)
 Time and Distance (Improper Time)
 Ignorance of medium
 Physical disability
 Information Overload
PHYSICAL BARRIERS (cont.)
 Background noise
 Poor lighting
 Uncomfortable
sitting
 Unhygienic room
 Too hot or cold
Environmental barriers
Crowded, noisy environment
People taking
Music playing
No Privacy
Telephone call.
HOW TO OVERCOME?
 To be updated with latest technologies.
 Choosing a suitable environment.
 Removing obstacle.
 Making signs easier to read, example, you could
supplement written signs with pictures and visual signs.
 Self Motivation.
CULTURAL BARRIERS
Culture shapes the way we think and behave. Cultural difference
leads to difference in interest, knowledge, value, and tradition.
Therefore, people of different cultures will experience these
culture factors as a barrier to communicate with each other.
FACTORS CAUSING CULTURAL BARRIER •
 Diversified cultural background.
 Language and Accent.
 Religion.
HOW TO OVERCOME ?
 Cross culture environment.
 Have a thorough knowledge of your counterpart’s culture
background.
 Conduct effective communication workshop.
 Work in groups and run frequent meeting
LANGUAGE BARRIERS
When a person uses inappropriate words while conversing or
writing, it could lead to misunderstanding between the sender
and a receiver.
FACTORS CAUSING LANGUAGE BARRIERS •
 Similar sounding words pale/pail, alter/altar, buy/bye/by
 Words having multiple meaning ( call, cell)
 Inadequate vocabulary (linguistic ability, difficult words)
 Interpreting difference
HOW TO OVERCOME ?
 Speak slowly and clearly.
 Ask for clarification.
 Frequently check for understanding.
 Be specific.
 Choose your medium of communication effectively.
 Be patient.
EMOTIONAL BARRIERS
The emotional state may influence your capacity to make
yourself understood and hamper your understanding of others.
Many times, emotional barriers on your part or the part of the
person you are speaking which may inhibit your ability to
communicate on an effective level.
FACTORS CAUSING EMOTIONAL BARRIER
 Fear/ insecurity
 Mistrust
 Stress
HOW TO OVERCOME ?
 Motivation and commitment to change.
 Peer or mentor support .
 Practice expressing recognition
GENDER BARRIERS
Relationships, respect, workplace authority and education are
common ways men and women are pitted against each other.
This barrier arises because men and women have different
ways of thinking and communication.
FACTORS CAUSING GENDER BARRIERS
 Fear and shy
 Environment
 Misunderstanding
HOW TO OVERCOME ?
 The process of bridging the gap in gender communication
requires the great deal of patience and understanding that
only time and attention will teach.
ORGANIZATIONAL BARRIERS
All the internal factors which stymie or block the process of
communication are known as organizational barriers.
FACTORS CAUSING ORGANIZATIONAL BARRIERS
 One way flow
 Too many levels in organization structure
 Information overload
 Authoritarian attitude of management
 Insufficient Communication Training
HOW TO OVERCOME?
 Use of Simple Language.
 Simple Organizational Structure.
 Avoid Information Overload.
 Proper Media Selection.
 Create a climate of trust and openness.
PERCEPTUAL BARRIERS
The most common problem is that the people have difference
opinion . The varied perceptions of every individual give rise to a
need for effective communication. We all have our own
preferences, values, attitudes, origins and life experiences that act
as ‘filters’ on our experiences of people, events and information.
FACTORS CAUSING PERCEPTUAL BARRIERS
 Difference in Understanding
 Difference in Perception of Reality
 Differences in Values, Attitudes and Opinions
HOW TO OVERCOME?
 Start by listening to others.
 Clarify if there is confusion.
 Stay
Physiological Barrier
Physiological barriers to communication are related with the
limitations of the human body and the human mind.
 Memory
 Attention
 Personal discomfort
 Ill-health (Poor eye sight, or hearing difficulty)
 Unhappy emotions
 People's state of mind
Personal barriers
 Lake of confidence
 Personal shyness
 Emotion
 Discomfort in sensitive situations

Barriers of communication

  • 1. Barriers of Communication Dr. SHAFAYAT ALI Assistant Professor/HOD Department of Mass Comm. Govt. College of Science, Wahdat Road, Lahore
  • 2. WHAT IS COMMUNICATION  Communication is the activity of conveying meaningful information. It requires a sender, a message, and an intended recipient.
  • 3. BARRIERS OF COMMUNICATION Barrier is an obstacle in a place that prevents us from completing certain tasks. Communication barriers can be defined as the aspects or conditions that interfere with effective exchange of information, ideas or thoughts.  Unplanned distortion during the communication resulting in the receiver obtaining a different message than that sent by the sender is referred to as barriers in communication.
  • 4. BARRIERS OF COMMUNICATION (cont.)  Every obstacle that stands between the sender and the receiver.  Also called as “Noise” or “distortions” in communication.
  • 5. TYPES OF BARRIERS  Physical Barrier  Cultural Barrier  Language Barrier  Emotional Barrier  Gender Barrier  Organizational Barrier  Perceptual Barrier

PHYSICAL BARRIERS Physical barriers relate to disturbance in the immediate situation, which can interfere in the course of an effective communication FACTORS CAUSING PHYSICAL BARRIER  Defects in media/Channel (Network Facilities • Mechanical Breakdowns)  Distraction in environment (Noise, outside disturbance, bad handwriting/typing)  Time and Distance (Improper Time)  Ignorance of medium  Physical disability  Information Overload
  • 7. PHYSICAL BARRIERS (cont.)  Background noise  Poor lighting  Uncomfortable sitting  Unhygienic room  Too hot or cold Environmental barriers Crowded, noisy environment People taking Music playing No Privacy Telephone call.
  • 8. HOW TO OVERCOME?  To be updated with latest technologies.  Choosing a suitable environment.  Removing obstacle.  Making signs easier to read, example, you could supplement written signs with pictures and visual signs.  Self Motivation.
  • 9. CULTURAL BARRIERS Culture shapes the way we think and behave. Cultural difference leads to difference in interest, knowledge, value, and tradition. Therefore, people of different cultures will experience these culture factors as a barrier to communicate with each other. FACTORS CAUSING CULTURAL BARRIER •  Diversified cultural background.  Language and Accent.  Religion.
  • 10. HOW TO OVERCOME ?  Cross culture environment.  Have a thorough knowledge of your counterpart’s culture background.  Conduct effective communication workshop.  Work in groups and run frequent meeting
  • 11. LANGUAGE BARRIERS When a person uses inappropriate words while conversing or writing, it could lead to misunderstanding between the sender and a receiver. FACTORS CAUSING LANGUAGE BARRIERS •  Similar sounding words pale/pail, alter/altar, buy/bye/by  Words having multiple meaning ( call, cell)  Inadequate vocabulary (linguistic ability, difficult words)  Interpreting difference
  • 12. HOW TO OVERCOME ?  Speak slowly and clearly.  Ask for clarification.  Frequently check for understanding.  Be specific.  Choose your medium of communication effectively.  Be patient.
  • 13. EMOTIONAL BARRIERS The emotional state may influence your capacity to make yourself understood and hamper your understanding of others. Many times, emotional barriers on your part or the part of the person you are speaking which may inhibit your ability to communicate on an effective level. FACTORS CAUSING EMOTIONAL BARRIER  Fear/ insecurity  Mistrust  Stress
  • 14. HOW TO OVERCOME ?  Motivation and commitment to change.  Peer or mentor support .  Practice expressing recognition
  • 15. GENDER BARRIERS Relationships, respect, workplace authority and education are common ways men and women are pitted against each other. This barrier arises because men and women have different ways of thinking and communication. FACTORS CAUSING GENDER BARRIERS  Fear and shy  Environment  Misunderstanding
  • 16. HOW TO OVERCOME ?  The process of bridging the gap in gender communication requires the great deal of patience and understanding that only time and attention will teach.
  • 17. ORGANIZATIONAL BARRIERS All the internal factors which stymie or block the process of communication are known as organizational barriers. FACTORS CAUSING ORGANIZATIONAL BARRIERS  One way flow  Too many levels in organization structure  Information overload  Authoritarian attitude of management  Insufficient Communication Training
  • 18. HOW TO OVERCOME?  Use of Simple Language.  Simple Organizational Structure.  Avoid Information Overload.  Proper Media Selection.  Create a climate of trust and openness.
  • 19. PERCEPTUAL BARRIERS The most common problem is that the people have difference opinion . The varied perceptions of every individual give rise to a need for effective communication. We all have our own preferences, values, attitudes, origins and life experiences that act as ‘filters’ on our experiences of people, events and information. FACTORS CAUSING PERCEPTUAL BARRIERS  Difference in Understanding  Difference in Perception of Reality  Differences in Values, Attitudes and Opinions
  • 20. HOW TO OVERCOME?  Start by listening to others.  Clarify if there is confusion.  Stay
  • 21. Physiological Barrier Physiological barriers to communication are related with the limitations of the human body and the human mind.  Memory  Attention  Personal discomfort  Ill-health (Poor eye sight, or hearing difficulty)  Unhappy emotions  People's state of mind
  • 22. Personal barriers  Lake of confidence  Personal shyness  Emotion  Discomfort in sensitive situations
