An Artist's Manifesto is a declaration of intent. What it means to live and create work like an artist. It is also about my personal journey to full time artist. www.malcolmdeweyfineart.com
2. I knew that I could not solve the problem of a toxic business partnership. Some situations cannot be repaired.
They must be released from your life.
I knew too that a decision had to be made. I had to make the leap of faith. It took me six years to conquer the
fear. This was about providing for my family after all. When the decision was made it became easy.
My first true act of creation was to create something new despite the fear.
Then more years of building before I came to the another meeting. This time I was confronting my own true
self. I knew what gave me energy each day. Where the passion came from, but again the fear of change. This
time it was stronger. There was more to lose. Even more than losing money I did not want to appear a fool.
This was about pride and therefore unworthy. This too was defeated.
To follow the true course an artist must be
FAITHFUL & FEARLESS
4. The creative spirit cannot be destroyed. It is not material. It is a universe on its
own and always regenerating. Who knows how many universes have existed
before this one we occupy now. Scientists suggest that a universe can regenerate
infinitely. Big bang – expansion – contraction – big bang. Time bends back upon
itself and keeps going. If time is even the correct word.
Forget for a moment all the material and psychological trash that we fill our minds
with: money, sales, rent, mortgage, repayments, newspaper headlines,
rand/dollar, interest rates, is she? Is he?, gossip, TV, social networking, sound-
bites, advertising, like me, pandering, compromising, one-upmanship, jealousy,
lust, insincerity, texting, on and on and on.
SIMPLY CREATE
5. the process
The happy people are those who are
producing something; the bored
people are those who are consuming
much and producing nothing.
(William Ralph Inge)
6. An artist needs to create. When the artist listens to the creative
voice and answers he will start the process.
There are no conditions such as special tools.
Those will come.
I HAVE RESOLVED TO LISTEN AND ANSWER EVERY DAY.
7. resistance
The time will never be 'just right.' Start
where you stand, and work with
whatever tools you may have at your
command, and better tools will be
found as you go along. (Napoleon Hill)
8. Procrastination is a sign of a perfectionist. (P.J. Kennedy)
The artist will do his work on time.
There is no place for excuses, blame or ego.
DO THE WORK
9. passion
It's easy to get bogged down in the
circumstantial and mundane, but if we
connect to our passion, that in itself will
be regenerative; we won't have to wait
for the energy, it will be there.
(Nina Simons)
10. Passion is that which we feel and must show in our work.
Passion regenerates without effort
It is not from the material world
Passion will conquer your fear
CREATE WITH PASSION
11. humility
Regardless of how much information I
have processed or how much
knowledge of art materials or theories I
possess, I always feel humble. I feel
like a novice picking up the brush for
the first time in front of a new canvas.
(Jeanean Songco Martin)
12. An artist must remain humble.
We do not create except by the
universal energy that works
through us.
BE HUMBLE
14. An artist must give freely
And be grateful for the giving
For that which we give with joyful heart
Is how we express our gratitude for the gifts
Given to us by the Creator
I WILL CREATE AND GIVE WITH A JOYFUL HEART
15. persist
In spite of everything I shall rise again: I
will take up my pencil, which I have
forsaken in my great discouragement,
and I will go on with my drawing.
(Vincent van Gogh)
16. The pain passes, but the beauty remains.
(Pierre-Auguste Renoir)
Do not expect reward
Do not expect thanks
All this is pride
Just create
IN THE END IT IS THE BEAUTY THAT REMAINS
17. sincerity
You can look at art 'til you are
overwhelmed, but when you go to the
easel you are only yourself, and that is
all that you can honestly paint.
(CT Cummins)
18. An artist must not seek fame or fortune
They are illusions
An artist must be true to his or her art
Bold and courageous
What will be will be
BE TRUE - BE BRAVE
20. In the end it comes down to this
An artist must love
Without love there is no art
Love is no accident
CREATE WITH A LOVING HEART
