Implementing Strategic Design
1. Treat Strategic Design Like a New Business
If business leaders are going to take you seriously, you need to speak to them in their own
language, and so treat the Strategic Design implementation like it’s a new business.

2. Optimize What You Influence
You can’t lead others until you can lead your self/team. So focus on your area of influence
by educating your team to ensure you’re prepared to lead other departments in design
methodologies, and ultimately, company leadership.

3. Expansion via Collaboration
Expand the influence of design and execute on your business plan by educating leaders
and colleagues in other departments through on-going collaboration. Be opportunistic and
say yes or volunteer for all opportunities that come your way.

4. Shoot for the Moon
Once you’ve hit a tipping point and proven its value, shoot for the moon. Start engaging
with anyone in the C-suite who will listen, and present your successes as a business case
for deploying Strategic Design throughout the organization.

Conclusion
Strategic Design is an Extraordinary Catalyst for Innovation
If today’s business leaders want to truly position their companies to innovate and lead their
markets, they need to quickly learn how to embed design into the very fabric of an
organization's culture, strategy, and operations.
Show of hands, how many folks agree w/ this statement?
I would suggest that this is just a symptom of a larger problem… for example, there’s 30,000 consumer products launched, and 95% of them fail.
This leads me to believe that most companies have an innovation problem, and it’s from the lack of design!
This slide is a little depressing, right?
Does anyone else have any other reasons why design isn’t utilized broadly?
Beyond just an innovation driver, it helps employees to go above and beyond their ordinary work to become creatives and innovators.
Remember that great ideas can come from anywhere.
Design is the strategy is the ultimate goal for the organization:
Design is not just how we build our extraordinary products and services, but it’s also how we operate the company, build our talent, our culture.
There’s 2 main methods:
If you’re a CEO or in the C-suite, you just tell people what you want, and they do it. Must be nice… Show of hands, any CEO’s here today?
If not, then it’s really a bottom-up approach… and that’s what I’m goin to share w/ you today
I created a business case for Strategic Design and proposed that we use 10% of our time to implement design in other departments.
For us, it wasn’t about ROI as much as it’s about empowering teams.
1) Start w/ your team:
Train them in the design methodologies + agile + lean methodologies.
Hire designers w/ unique talents beyond design (business, engineering, math, etc)
Require your team to learn about business subjects: analytics, operations, finance, etc.
2) Talk to friends in other depts:
Listen for problems as a way to discuss design as a solution
3) Even encourage your families, neighbors, and social circles to utilize and embrace design.
Articles, whitepapers, and knowledge sharing sessions help, but they’re passive… you need to take action, and collaboration is the best way.
1) Pull in leaders and teams to watch your design teams in action
2) Say yes all opportunities…
Recently helped lead Change Mgmt strategy for Workday integration
Ran a Design Thinking session (instead of a kickoff) to define the project vision, guiding principles, and our case for change.
Amazing experience w/ executive sponsors collaborating w/ the project team.
Examples we’ve implemented:
Utilized empathy for our acquisition of TCA to integrate the 2 companies (surveys, town halls)
Design Sprints for all project starting points
Prototypes instead of requirements
Wrapping up our first year, and we’re putting together an Exec Summary to share w/ the leadership of the teams we’ve impacted.
We’re already hearing from the teams we’ve worked w/ on follow-up requests to collaborate.
Beyond these benefits:
People will work and think differently about their jobs and their company
And they will have the tools to participate and innovate in their dept
I personally believe the Design Revolution will be the next great industrial revolution…
But it’s up to all of us here to ensure that it happens.
