3. The sisters grew up in a wealthy
Christian family of 14 children.
Their father was Judge John
Fauchereaud Grimke. Raised in
South Carolina, they lived on a
plantation accompanied with many
slaves. In covert Sarah educated the
slave children. Once Angelina was
born the sisters became inseparable.
Originating from this family gave
the sisters a respectable education.
4. Sarah moved to Pennsylvania to
become a Quaker, and Angelina
followed.

Both were well involved in
Antislavery Societies.
5. Angelina married to Theodore
Dwight Weld, an abolitionist.
In the mid 1800’s all Angelina,
Theodore, and Sarah retired to
New Jersey. Later on they
moved to Massachusetts.
