1. TEMPORAL PRESENTATION OF
SYMPTOMS
OF INTERNET ADDICTION
AMONG FILIPINO ADOLESCENTS
USING THE ISIA IAT SCALE
(presented at the 2nd annual convention of International Society of Internet Addiction at
Seoul, South Korea held October 18, 2013)
MILEN SANTIAGO RAMOS MA, MSC, PHD
PHILIPPINES
2.
3. The purpose of the study is to
develop stages of symptoms of
internet addiction as a
reflection of development of
pathology thereby aiding its
recognition as a disorder.
4. Time related questionaires were taken from
the assessment tool develop by International
Society of Internet Addiction (ISIA) with
reference to time.
Portion of the questionnaire is focused on
the symptom that develop after exposure of
one (1) week
(taken from PART 5 consisting of 20 items),
two (2) weeks
(taken from PART 7 consisting of 13 items )
three (3) months
(taken from PART 4 consisting of 26 items) of the original ISIA
internet addiction questionnaire
5. Internet addiction disorder (IAD)
is excessive computer use that
interferes with daily life. As
defined by wikipedia.
6. IAD was originally proposed as a disorder in
a satirical hoax by Ivan Goldberg, M.D., in 1995 He
took pathological gambling as diagnosed by
the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders (DSM-IV) as his model for the
description of IAD.
It is listed as a "condition for further study" in
DSM-5 from 2013 (this year), but not recognized as
a disorder.
7. CULLING OF DATA
Responses of one thousand adolescents were used to determine which among the
items in the time referenced questionaires will give statistically significant results
One thousand (1000) answered questionaires was gathered by 10 students. Each
handling 100 cases
It is anticipated that not all 26 items from PART 4, not all 13 items from PART 7, and
not all 20 items from PART 5 will give statistically significant result. It is expected to
give out the best items /behavior that will characterize one week use, 2 weeks use as
well as 3 months use of internet exposure.
13. PART 5

25. CHARACTERIZATION OF THE STAGES
Initial stage - affect is very much affected (i.e. crying
spells, loss of appetite, talking less than usual, restlessness in sleep,
talking less than usual – and also affecting the vegetative functions .
NOTE: there is no mention here yet whatsoever of the internet
Middle stage- executive function seems to be in distress
(i.e. lack of concentration or restless ness, difficulties in keeping up
with educational activities, difficulties in look after oneself or taking
responsibility for one s independence
Final stage- one s affective disposition and
executive/decision making are down ….there is dependence ONLY
on one thing …. Internet (i.e. feeling energized online, feeling life is
joyless without the internet, staying online for longer and longer
periods of time
31. QUICK VS SLOW STABILIZERS
(HORIZONTAL INTERPRETATION)
32. CHARACTERIZATION OF THE STAGES
(as based from numerical data)
Initial stage - showed the most severe score as based
from the mean suggestive that initial exposure would produce the
greatest impact on the person
Middle stage - showed the lowest mean which can be
because of sensitization.
Final stage – showed mean which is in the middle of the
initial stage and middle stage suggestive that the condition had
stabilized ….
addiction had set in
34. It is hypothesized that the greater the difference
between the scores between the initial stage and the
middle stage the more the REAL the addiction which
we tested numerically..
41. THAT INTERNET ADDICTION IS NOT AN ILLUSION
THAT INDICATORS ARE POINTING THAT IT IS A
DISORDER WHICH HAS TO BE ADDRESSED AS IT
CAN BE DEBILITATING ON THE PERSON
IT AFFECTS BOTH THE AFFECTIVE AND
EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS OF THE PERSON
WE STILL HAVE TO PROVE THAT THE BEHAVIOR
HAS STRONG LINKAGE WITH THE EXISTENCE OF
DELTA FOS B .., THE MOLECULAR SWITCH IN
BEHAVIORAL ADDICTION (AS PURPORTED BY
ERIC NESTLER) IN HUMANS BUT WE ARE
GOING THERE… PROBABLY ON OUR NEXT
CONFERENCE
42. my final note
It would be interesting to collate
data from other Asian countries
which used the same questionaire to
see if it will bring out the same or
differing results. Section 3 of DSM5
listed internet gaming disorder as
supported by the evidences coming
from studies in the Asian region
