3. Pre K- Kindergarten and Kindergarten “ 50 ways to make 50” “ The students will use MATH methods to make groups of 50’s using 2’s, 5’s 10’s and 25’s “ When was 1959?” The students will create a vodcast or voicethread where they will give their opinion on how the world was 50 years ago. 4. 1 st grade “ The Superheroes of 1959 ” The students will employ their 21 st research skills and library search skills to list the superheroes that were mostly read by students in the year 1959. They are: Astroboy, Superboy, The Flash, Goliath, Green Lantern. Legion of Heroes, and many more that they will find at www.wikipedia.com The students will write the biography of the super hero, become the superhero, or compare and contrast superheroes using their literacy skills and 21 st century learning. 5. 2nd grade/ 3 rd grade “ Presidents, Here and Now ” The 5 groups will each adopt 2 Presidents for comparing and contrasting based on a 10 question investigation. Those 10 questions will be used for comparing and contrasting the two Presidents. The comparisons will be put together in a collage where the heads of both Presidents will be positioned like a Venn Diagram. Standards-Based Events by Students
6. 3 rd grade “ Dude, Where’s my 1959 car? ” The 3 rd graders will explore transportation and the changes throughout time from 1959 to 2009. They will demonstrate their investigation in a PowerPoint presentation where they will discuss, analyze, compare and contrast automobiles, airplanes, trains, boats/cruiseships, and even the Sputnik as means of transportation. 7. 4 th grade “ Society Shake and Bake” The 4 th grade class will investigate the most important events of 1959 and will nominate ONE for “Society Shaker of 1959” They will write a persuasive essay on why their event should win the award, and list the reasons why this event changed society. They will post their essays to a box of Shake and Bake as part of the display. Standards-Based Events by Students
8. 5 th grade “ 1959: The Golden Year of Movies” The 5 th grade class will research the 1959 Academy Awards and, using the teacher’s criteria, will become an actor or actress from that year, summarize the plot of the most important movies, and create a Walk of Fame using technology applications such as Glogster. 9. MUSIC “ 1959: The Golden Year of Music” The students will research the hits of 1959 *35 songs total* , listen to some hits, compare and contrast lyrics then and now, and in the end, they will create a record label using Photoshop to paste it to a vinyl album which will be on display in the hallway Standards-Based Events by Students
10. SPANISH Timeline of Important Events that occurred in the Hispanic Culture (Cuba taken by Castro, immigration, and changes in society will go in a Glogster Standards-Based Events by Students
11. P.E. The P.E. classes will be based on dances from the 50’s such as Mashed Potatoes, Twist, etc. and the students will practice routines and steps Standards-Based Events by Students
