PLACE: DATE: TEXT: THEME: BLOW THE TRUMPET IN ZION. INTRODUCTION: READING:
After dividing the army into three companies of one hundred each, he armed each man with A trumpet . An earthenware pitcher. A lamp or torch inside . At the appointed signal they all blew the trumpets , broke the earthenware pitchers so that the light of the lamps would be visible, and cried, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!” They were to conceal the torches within the open-topped pitchers until the last possible minute, when they would break the pitchers, wave the torches, and blow the trumpets, giving the enemy the impression that a great host was coming down upon them. The divine interpretation of this incident is given in 2 Corinthians 4:7. Our bodies are the earthen vessels. It is only as we are constantly delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake that the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ shines forth to others.
As a normal custom in those days, armies rarely fought at night (notice I Samuel 17 where the two armies re-engaged each other day after day but did not fight at night). When an army did engage in battle at night, only a minority of men carried torches in order to light up the battlefield. In addition, only a certain number of men would carry and blow trumpets during the conflict. Therefore, when the 135,000 awoke to the sight of three hundred torches and the sound of three hundred trumpets blaring at them from every conceivable direction, they could only assume that thousands upon thousands were attacking them. The awaking 135,000 assumed that the battle had already begun and that they were outnumbered. The battle cry, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon, would strike fear in the minds of the enemy.
The Bible presents the day of the Lord as a about to happen reality. It is not something that we are gradually moving toward; rather, it is ever ready to burst in on us. At any moment, the day that is “near” may become present. He says they should blow the trumpet and sound an alarm. It is important for us to understand the importance of the trumpet.. What is the importance of the blowing of the trumpet? Back in the Book of Numbers we learn that when the children of Israel started through the wilderness, God commanded them to make two silver trumpets. God used the trumpets to move them on the wilderness march. The first blowing of the trumpet was a signal that everybody should get ready to march. When the pillar of cloud would lift and move out, they would take down the tabernacle. Then immediately the trumpet would sound again, and Moses and Aaron would move up front ahead of the tribe of Judah, and the ark would go out ahead with them.
Now when we come to Revelation, the final book of the Bible, we find the blowing of the trumpets again. Although some expositors feel that this is in relation to the church, there is no blowing of the trumpet for the church. The sound of the trumpet at the time of the Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:16) will be the shout of Christ Himself: “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God …”— His voice will be like a trumpet. Sound the alarm in Zion! The Lord is coming! Oh! To be faithful and busy for the Master! Rather then misuse the Master’s talents and lazy in our service to the King of Kings. Make me a servant oh Lord, a servant of all.
God held Ezekiel responsible for the house of Israel . The question arises for every believer: For whom will God hold us responsible? To whom shall we witness? Whom shall we warn? Our relatives, fellow workers, neighbours, friends? It is a solemn responsibility, and we do harm to our own soul if we do not fulfill it faithfully. The prophet’s ministry is likened unto that of a watchman, or sentry, observing the danger of a coming enemy and then warning his people. In like manner, he is a watchman to them in spiritual matters. If, as a prophet of God, he should fail to warn his people, he should be held accountable of spiritual manslaughter. Who will tell the lost Jesus and His plan of Salvation?
God had ordained Ezekiel to be a watchman, but now the people were to ordain their own watchmen in each area. The three key words are: The sword. The trumpet. The blood. When you see the sword coming, blow the trumpet and warn the people; otherwise, their blood will be on your hands ( Acts 20:26–27 ). A watchman’s failure was punishable by death. In the case of Ezekiel, punishment would come directly from God if he failed to report to the people the messages God gave him.
