4. WHO IS THIS PRESENTATION NOT FOR?
www.lillalako
For people who just want to find ANY jobs.
This is only for people who are willing to put in the
time to find their dream job.
5. MOST PEOPLE THINKG WHY THEY
DON’T GET THEIR DREAM JOB IS...
www.lillalako
- „I’m not qualified” – so they go back to school for another 3-
5 years. Going to school is good and important, but it’s not
what will get you hired, it’s not the solution for your career
problem.
- „I don’t have the right skills” – skills are important but
chances are less qualified people are doing your dream jobs.
Many people get jobs eventho ON PAPER they are far from the
right candidate. Unless you want to go into something like the
medical field, you can and (should be) learn WHILE you have you
are working in your dream job and get paid.
- „I’m lucky to even have job, let alone shoot for something
better” – The economy, the president etc. Has little to nothing
to do with your personal finance, career. Yes, in recession it
can be harder to find a job, but as someone who is hiring I can
tell you, I’m willing to pay extra to the right people. Top

For people who just want to find ANY jobs.
This is only for people who are willing to put in the

7. IT’S NOT THE QUESTION WILL YOU GET A JOB,
BUT RATHER WILL YOU GET THE RIGHT JOB
FOR YOURSELF AS YOU CHOOSE BETWEEN JOB
www.lillalako
8. THE PROBLEM IS NOT YOUR
INTELLECT OR QUALIFICATION, IT’S
YOUR APPROACH.
www.lillalako
9. HOW MOST PEOPLE APPROACH
FINDING A JOB
www.lillalako
1.Tweak their resumées for hours to make sure its
„perfect” and up-to date.
2. Search online job boards for general terms like
marketing maganer, web developer and send their resumée
and cover letter to ANY job posting that looks intersting
(like monster.com and such)
3. Reach out to a few contacts to let them know they are
looking for a job. Optional.
4. Wait and hope for the best.
11. HERE IS WHAT HAPPENS
www.lillalako
- They find out the job pays little or have a long list
of pre-requisites or both.
- Few decent jobs are taken the next day they posted by
people who are more qualified or willing to work for
less.
- They get zero feedback on what they are doing wrong.
- Repeats for months.
12. CONCLUSION:
„THE JOB MARKET SUCKS, I DID
EVERYTHING IN MY POWER, THERE IS
NOTHING MORE I CAN DO. „
www.lillalako
13. INSANITY: DOING THE SAME
THING OVER AND OVER AND
EXPECTING DIFFERENT RESULTS.
Albert Einstein
www.lillalako
14. „But Lilla, everyone else doing
the same...”
... And most likely they too
are one of those categories who
should watch this presentation.
www.lillalako
15. THIS APPROACH WORKS AGAINST YOU –
EFFECTS YOU DON’T SEE
www.lillalako
- People can only hear “no” so many times before they
give up mentally. They might go through the motions of
applying for jobs tho.
- You begin to undervalue yourself and thus start
applying to jobs you are overqualified for or
uninterested in.
- This approach works against you, because when you don’t
get hired, no results you go into a downward spiral that
can lead to depression, feeling of worthlessness.
- You are left thinking you have done everything, tried
everything, nothing else you could do.
16. THE PROBLEM
This generic method can work for some people but MOST
will find it ineffective and demoralizing - even the smartest
and most capable ones.
The problem is that people using this method spending too
much time and energy on the wrong things while neglecting
other, more productive activities.
www.lillalako
17. What most people do:
focusing the least
effective activities, that
takes the most of the
time, because it seems
logical and everyone does
it this way.
www.lillalako
18. You need fo focus on a few
critical activities that
are likely to get you the
most results in the
shortest period of time.
www.lillalako
19. WHAT MOST PEOPLE SPEND THEIR TIME ON
www.lillalako
- Resumées and Cover letters – not the most effective
marketing material, not enough to get you your dream job,
but has to be done. Could be outsourced to save time when
needed.
- Responding to job ads – Best jobs are taken BEFORE they
ever got advertised this way. They tend to be low quality
and high competition.
- Trying to get noticed – blogging, posting, going to
networking events to give out some business cardss (never
seem to go anywhere).
20. THE PROBLEM WITH THESE ACTIVITIES
www.lillalako
- They are passive, you rely on someone to post something, if that
doesnt happen, its out of your hands.
- They make you feel „productive” , even if you don’t get results.
- Everybody is doing the same – nearly impossible to stand out.
Note: don’t ignore these activities completely – just allocate time
properly, they can still make a big difference on the long run.
21. WHAT MOST PEOPLE SPEND THEIR TIME ON
www.lillalako
- Resumées and Cover letters – not the most effective
marketing material, not enough to get you your dream job,
but has to be done. Could be outsourced to save time when

- Trying to get noticed – blogging, posting, going to

22. WHY DO WE DO THIS?
www.lillalako
- We don’t know any better
- There is no real strategy-feedback system in place. We
simply throw resumées in hope it will land on the right
persons table.
- This might gets us a few interviews, but ultimately
it’s harmful because most people start persuing their
dream job and settle for whatever job they can get.
23. Not you!
You will know better and get
your dream job with one of the
following strategies!
www.lillalako
24. ONE POSSIBLE SOLUTION
The RIGHT recruiters & headhunters
www.lillalako
Through our family business I know, finding the RIGHT
headhunter/recruiter who values you and keeps your
interests and successfully matches it with the right
company can be a great solution.
The right one will prepare you for your interviews,
sometimes even go with you and walk you through the
entire procedure. Its like having your personal wingman.
25. ONE POSSIBLE SOLUTION
The RIGHT recruiters & headhunters
www.lillalako
+ the RIGHT person will get
you in
+ will prepare you for the
interview thus speeding up
the research process
+ will give you the
recommendation needed
+ will help negotiating
your salary earning his/her
own fee
- if you don’t know the
right
headhunter/recruiter it
can waste your time to
fill out millions of
applications till you
find the right one
- it can cost you time &
money
26. With recruiters/headhunters set a
goal of sending in 30-50
applications, if you don’t get 5
interviews , this method is not
worthy of your time.
www.lillalako
27. SOLUTION #2
Here is what will get you even better results:
www.lillalako
- getting specific on what you really want (which
position at which company)
- getting touch with the RIGHT people
- showing you are the RIGHT candidate for the position
28. GETTING SPECIFIC OF WHAT YOUR REALLY
WANT IS KEY!
www.lillalako
- Do you know what you want to do?
- Do you know the name of the position you want?
- What it takes to do it? How you fit the bills?
- Do you know the name of the companies that are hiring for this
position?
- Do you know the exact ones you want to work for and their biggest
problems/challenges?
- Be specific about your personal needs as well: how many vacation
days do you want to have? How much do you want to earn?
- What kind of benefits/privileges you would like to have? (like
Fridays off, bonus at the end of the year, free cafeteria or
bringing your dog to work)
29. FIND YOUR PASSION WHITH THESE
QUESTIONS FROM FORBES MAGAZINE
www.lillalako
If I could choose one friend to trade jobs with, I’d choose __________, because __________.
I’ve always wondered what it would be like to do _______. It’s interesting to me
because _______.
If I had the right education or skill set, I’d definitely try ____________, because
____________.
If I had to go back to school tomorrow, I’d major in ____________, because ____________.
My co-workers and friends always say I’m great at ____________, because ____________.
The thing I love most about my current job is ____________, because ____________.
If my boss would let me, I’d do more of ____________, because ____________.
If I had a free Saturday that had to be spent “working” on something, I’d choose _____,
because _____.
When I retire, I want to be known for ____________, because ____________.
30. “I want to work at an innovative,
growing company that adds value by
leveraging my unique management
skills” is not a real answer.
This could mean working at google or
at McDonalds. You need to dig deeper
than usual, nonspecific answers.
www.lillalako
31. Come up with a list of max 10 things
that you’d be interested in doing and
companies you would like to work in
that position.
Than eliminate it to 1 you will
investigate further and give it a go,
the one you feel the best about. If
you already have 1 career goal, focus
on that one, and that one only.

SERVICE PROVIDER WITHOUT THE TYPICAL RISKS OF OPENING A

PS. Promise, I’ll guide you through the stps. ;)
33. By forcing yourself to choose,
you increase your chances of getting results,
because your whole approach from resumée to
references will be tailor made for that position in
that company you want.
Go and get your dream job with this method and
if it doesn’t work, go to the next one on your list.
www.lillalako
34. We are overwhelmed by choice and think eliminating
them will take away from us, when in fact gives a clear
perspective.
If you don’t take away choices, you wont be able to
have a clear focus to move forward, that will
prohibit your success of landing your dream job.
Just pick one and go with it. You will learn more
than sitting around and waiting for someone to pick
one for you. If it doesnt work, you go to the next
one.
www.lillalako
35. People think they are closing doors
when choosing, NOT TRUE.
You are focusing on one very targeted
goal at a time.
If it works, great! You got your dream
job!
If it doesn’t work, great! You have 10
other options.
www.lillalako
36. GETTING IN TOUCH WITH THE RIGHT
PEOPLE
www.lillalako
Having a recommendation from the RIGHT people is your
golden ticket. You might think that you don’t have the
connection to the “right people”, but you do. Defining
them and reaching out to them is key. It’s not just
about collecting information , it is about assembling a
team of people who have your best interest in mind.
37. NETWORKING
www.lillalako
Is not giving out business cards at an event with greasy
hair, telling them to call you later. (not working)
Its about creating a new relationship. Getting to know
the right people, asking the right questions. Networking
is giving and letting people know your needs. Helping
people see how they can help you. It means showing people
you are worthy of being helped – by doing your homework
and actually doing and following their advice.
Your end goal is an introduction to the right person who
has the authority to hire you for the job you want and be
100% qualified, and prepared to ask for it by the time
you get there.
38. NETWORK ON LINKEDIN
www.lillalako
You know people, and they are connected to others.
Identify the 10 people in your circles who are in the
best position to help you.
People with the same job description, hiring managers,
people who are working for the company, if going for a
higher position C level people.
Ask for an introduction from the closest acquaintances
and get their email address.
This way multiple channels are working for you.
Out of 10 reach outs maybe 2-3 will positively respond.
39. BRAINSTORM 10 PEPLE, GET THEIR EMAIL
ADDRESSES, USE THE SCRIPTS BELOW TO
SCHEDULE COFFEE MEETINGS AND ASK FOR
REFERRALS.
www.lillalako
40. Your goal is to get to an
informal interview with them
and get a recommendation to
the RIGHT person at the
company you want to work
for.
www.lillalako
41. WHAT IS AN INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEW?
www.lillalako
An informational interview is an
opportunity to meet someone who works in
a position or industry you’d like to work
in, where you can ask them questions
about their job and get the inside scoop.
Never, ever directly ask for a job in an
informational interview.
42. An informal interview is NOT
WEIRD this is the strategy
that fills up those jobs
that never get posted.
www.lillalako
43. ON THE INFORMAL INTERVIEW YOU WANT TO LEARN:
- Who makes the hiring decision in the position you are looking
for.
- What are the companies and the departments challenges they
are facing now.
- Any additional info that would help you create a proposal for
the company in your chosen position.
- Get to know the person better (you did your homework, ask
questions that you naturally have to them, how they get where
they are now)
- Ask them “Who else should I be talking to?” to get an
introduction to the right people.
www.lillalako
44. DO’S and DON’Ts IN THE INFORMAL
INTERVIEW
www.lillalako
+ Reach out through a warm contact, or
spend time studying social media to
find one.
+ Explain any similarities you have –
like going to the same school, grew up
in the same place. It can make people
act like a human being even if they are
VIP.
+ Reach out in a BRIEF, CONISE EMAIL.
Show you the exact ones.
+ Show up on the meeting and ask
insightful questions. BAD: What should
I do with my life? Good: You did XY at
this point of your career, what was
your thinking?
+ Ask for 90% of the informal interview
and LISTEN. 10% talk about the exciting
- Asking worthless questions
- Ramble
- Only talk about yourself
- Not following up
45. Note: even if you are socially awkward,
doesn’t matter!
Awkward can be endearing, but the most
important come prepared! If you do they
most likely offer you a job or get you
in touch with the right person.

EXAMPLE FOR INVITATION FOR INFORMAL INTERVIEW
To: Jane
From: Samantha
Subject: Michigan State grad — would love to chat about your work at Deloitte
Hi Jane,
My name is Samantha Kerritt. I’m a ’04 grad from Michigan State (I know you were a few years
before me) and I came across your name on our alumni site. [TELL THEM HOW YOU CAME ACROSS THEIR
NAME SO YOU DON’T SEEM LIKE A CREEP]
I’d love to get your career advice for 15-20 minutes. I’m currently working at Acme Tech Company,
but many of my friends work in consulting and each time they tell me how much they love their
job, I get more interested. [THE FIRST SENTENCE SAYS WHAT SHE WANTS. MOST PEOPLE ARE FLATTERED
THAT PEOPLE WANT/VALUE THEIR ADVICE.
Most of them have told me that if I’m interested in consulting, I have to talk to someone at
Deloitte. Do you think I could pick your brain on your job and what motivated you to choose
Deloitte? I’d especially love to know how you made your choices after graduating from Michigan
State. [THE PHRASE “PICK YOUR BRAIN” IS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO ASK FOR ADVICE AND FLATTER, AND
“MICHIGAN STATE” REINFORCES SHARED BOND]
I can meet you for coffee or at your office…or wherever it’s convenient. I can work around you!
[THE BUSY PERSON IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU. TREAT THEM ACCORDINGLY.]
Would it be possible for us to meet? [A BUSY PERSON CAN SIMPLY REPLY TO THIS WITH A “YES” —
PERFECT. NOTE THAT I DIDN’T ASK FOR THE TIME/LOCATION AS THAT’S TOO MUCH INFORMATION IN THE FIRST
EMAIL.]
47. www.lillalako
EXAMPLE – HOW TO ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS ON WHO TO SPEAK TO
Hello John,
Hope all is well.
If you recall, we spoke a few months ago when I was exploring new career
opportunities in information security (I was your student at the time). Thanks
again for agreeing to be my reference! [REMIND THE BUSY PERSON HOW YOU KNOW
EACH OTHER
I was browsing the the Acme Career site the other day and the Research
Scientist role caught my eye. I think it’d be perfect for me considering my
work on insider threat-related projects at Current Company. [NOTE THAT THE
FOCUS OF THIS EMAIL IS ASKING FOR RECOMMENDATIONS, NOT DIRECTLY ASKING FOR A
JOB. JOHN UNDERSTANDS YOU’RE LOOKING FOR WORK AND DOESN’T WANT TO BE PUT ON
THE SPOT. IF HE WANTS TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE POSITION, HE WILL.]
From what I remember, it sounds pretty similar to the work you do at Acme. By
any chance, do you know of anyone there that you think I should chat with? I’d
love to learn more about the role so I can see if it’s the right fit for me.
If not, no problem — just wanted to keep you in the loop. Thanks again for all
your help!
Take care,
48. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN ON THE
INFORMAL INTERVIEW?
www.lillalako
Learn who is making the hiring decision?
What does the company/department
struggles with?
How the company works?
What do they value?
Who else should you talking to?
49. ALWAYS SEND A THANK YOU NOTE
www.lillalako
It’s the first step of building a relationship. Express
your gratitude and show how you are using what you
learned from them.
Example:
Hey XY, thanks for the time, and thanks especially for
pointing out that [GENIUS POINT THEY MADE]. I took what
you said and reached out to Beth Jones and Mike Smith and
found out [AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENT]. That helped me get a
$3,000 raise and also get Fridays off”
This kind of note worth more than money especially for a
VIP.
50. You get them (people at the company) excited
to hear you and possibly work with you before
even setting foot on the interview, that’s
why its more like a discussion not an
interview when you have the right
recommendations.
www.lillalako
51. YOUR JOB IS NOW TO SHOW WHY YOU ARE
THE BEST CANDIDATE WITH THE BRIEFCASE
METHOD
www.lillalako
Why its so powerful?
- Because you show you understand their problems and can
communicate better than any other candidate.
- Because you have prepared proof that you can do the job
more convincingly than anyone else has (briefcase method…
coming up)
- You have better recommendations from the right people
52. THE INTERVIEWER IS INTERESTED IN 3
THINGS
www.lillalako
1.Why should they hire you?
Don’t answer “Because I’m hard working, reliable,
passionate, smart…etc.” – so is everyone else. Give them
specifics. (briefcase method… coming up)
2.Why you are a better choice than anyone else?
3.How are you going to make the person/your future boss
look good?
Note: a better hire is not necessary more experienced or
a better technician.
53. THE BRIEFCASE METHOD
www.lillalako
When they ask about your salary needs, you’ll come
prepared and get a proposal out from your
briefcase. (3-5 page concise version)
You’ll SHOW (not tell), why they should hire you,
why they should pay you the amount you are asking
for, how you are going to make your boss look good
and they will know immediately why you are a
better choice than everyone else.
54. THE BRIEFCASE METHOD
www.lillalako
In the proposal you will discuss the exact challenges they
are talking about in their internal meetings, use the
exact words they use.
You know the details from your informal interviews. It
will show you did your homework, you know what the company
is facing and how you can help.
It will contain when they hire you what will you exactly
do. How it is going to make them money (ROI), around how
much, what challenges can you bring answers to, how much
time will you need to accomplish this.
55. www.lillalako
In this case its more like a discussion
than an interview.
If you get this far, you’ll be better off
than 99% of other applicants and much more
likely to get your dream job you deserve.
56. NEGOTIATING YOUR SALARY
www.lillalako
Show up prepared, look up how much people are making in your position:
salary.com, payscale.com, glassdoor.com
These are the ordinary people, show them why you are extraordinary and
that’s why you should be paid the amount you are asking for. Stay
realistic.
Use the following phrase:
“I understand the companies strategic goal and this is how I’m going
to help you get there (brief method papers). (example: I’m going to
drive $1M revenue) I think we are in the right ball park, let’s find a
way to make it work for both of us.”
57. HAVE ANOTHER JOB OFFER IN YOUR POCKET
www.lillalako
Your value goes up. This could give you
confidence, show them there are other companies
interested to get you immediately and creates
competition but could also backfire, so careful.
Note: You are under no obligation to tell them
what company offered how much, unless you want.
58. SMILE!
www.lillalako
It disarms and shows you are confident.
You are not begging for a job, but give their
company a way to get what they want.
You could get a job elsewhere, but let’s see how
we can make it work for both of you.
59. WHAT IF THERE IS NO ROOM FOR
NEGOTIATION?
www.lillalako
Save face for both of you, it will be highly appreciated.
You could say:
“I understand times are tough now, but I’m very excited about this job
and I think you can see it from my plan I can bring value to this
company. If I’m doing a great job, knocking your socks off, doing an
extraordinary job would you be willing to talk about re-negotiating
this compensation plan again in 6months?”
They will say yes most likely.
“Let’s get this in writing and we are good to go. I’m really excited
about this challenge” – make sure its included in your contract.
60. THIS IS WHY YOU DO 80% OF THE WORK
BEFORE GOING TO THE INTERVIEW
www.lillalako
Which is:
- researching and getting in contact with the
right people
- getting together for informal interviews
- getting recommendations
- preparing your proposal for the position
61. MY RESULTS WITH THIS METHOD
www.lillalako
- I needed the RIGHT person to introduce me to the RIGHT
headhunter to get my dream job, which I did.
- Then they offered 2x the salary I originally wanted to
ask for (my original target was realistic tho). The
headhunter negotiated and I did too for a higher pay.
- Re-negotiated my salary and get a 20% increase
- Through our family recruiting business (helping people
get jobs in gastronomy in Switzerland) I was able to
guide around hundred people through the hiring process,
for fun with this method
- When I used the Briefcase method at a salary
negotiation they offered me $24k more than I expected
- When I used the Briefcase method with a start-up they
offered me 20% shares of their business (I was consulting
with a start-up for fun)
