2. The Junior School Library is developing to
support teaching and learning, and also to
extend the curriculum. This booklet outlines
of some of the main resources and services
the Library has to offer. The Junior School
Library is also a part of a virtual service
offered across the whole school—Library
Online Services. The last part of the
booklet explains more about our local
Schools Library Service, LSE.
1) Staffing
Professional Librarian: Mrs Anne Robinson
School Library Association School Librarian of the
Year 2005 for the UK.
I manage the resources, services and facilities
across the libraries at the Junior and Senior
Schools. I work alongside the Library Co-
ordinator, Mrs Enston, at the Junior School.
My role is to plan and deliver research and study
skills lessons, inductions for students and staff,
INSET, reading development, ICT skills
development and extra-curricular activities in
collaboration with teaching staff. We hope to be
able to extend more of this kind of work to the
Junior School in the future.
I work full-time 8.15-5.15 and spend two mornings
each week at the Junior School.

Mrs Enston organises an exciting range of events
and activities throughout the year in the Junior
School Library to encourage reading and literacy.
She also manages the Student Helper Team,
alongside her very busy teaching commitments.

3. 2) About our Library
The Library is situated on the top floor of the main building opposite the ICT Room.
Since the Summer of 2011, we have been re-developing the Library including:
a. Weeding the existing stock to remove out-dated and damaged books.
b. Cataloguing the remaining books onto a computerised Library Management
System, Junior Librarian.
c. Labelling the stock to help students and staff find books more easily.
d. Re-arranging the shelving to enable a logical flow.
e. Making new guiding to help with location and selection.
f. Putting up new displays.
g. Purchasing loads of new books and cataloguing them onto Junior Librarian.
h. Monitoring and posting about our progress on the Library website—Library Online.
i. Setting up new management systems for the Library.
j. Creating publications with teaching materials and guidance on using the Library.
3) Resources
Print Resources:
Fiction: including Picture Books, Disney Corner, First Reads, and general fiction.
Non-fiction: to support and extend the curriculum.
Displays, booklists and reviewing magazines: we hope to make more of these
available soon.
Digital and Online Resources:
Research Guides: this is a service I offer to the Senior School, but it could easily
be extended to the Juniors. I collect and organise a range of evaluated websites
to support any curriculum subject. These are then made into a Research Guide on
our LibGuides platform with videos, books, downloadable materials and so on. The
look and feel of the platform is very flexible and could be made more appropriate
for Junior pupils.
For examples, see our Research Guides on LibGuides:
http://library-online.libguides.com/index.php
4. Subscription Databases: We now have a series of superb online subscription
databases available, through our subscription to LSE (see below), for use by staff
and students. These are suitable for a range of subjects. More may be added
during the year—please ask me for access details and training.
If you are a member of the public library, then you will be able to access an
extensive range of online resources. There is a link to these from our website,
Library Online—see URL below.
Library Online Services: Our libraries have an extensive range of websites
designed to support and extend our services—Library Online Services. This
virtual library is available any time anywhere with library information, reading
guides, rolling news feeds, downloadable resources and much more! Please ask
me for a demonstration of how these services can support your work.
Our main website, Library Online: http://library-online.org.uk
Resource Collections from LSE (see also last two pages):
We subscribe to LSE, our local Schools Library Service. This enables me to borrow
collections of books on your behalf. These resources may be used in the Library or
your classroom. All staff have personal membership and can borrow a range of
resources, including artefacts and DVDs. It is helpful if you can let me know your
requests with plenty of notice as I visit LSE during most school holidays. The books
are then delivered by LSE to the school and I catalogue and box them up for you.

5. 4) Library Layout and Organisation
The plan below shows the current layout of the Library shelving:
General Fiction Books (Stories):
General Fiction is shelved in the order of the Author’s Surname.
e.g. Roald Dahl’s books can be found at
Each book is labelled with the first three letters of the Author’s Surname. The
sequence starts by the Fire Exit with A and ends on the shelves next to the Main
Entrance with Z.
There are shelf guides to help students to find their books.
Picture Books, First Reads and Disney:
Picture books are housed in the Kinderbox. First Reads are shelved on the Yellow
Shelf between the main door and the kinderbox. They are not in any particular order.
Christmas books are on the yellow shelf.
Disney books are in Disney Corner! They are not in any particular order.

6. Non-fiction Books (Facts/Information):
Non-fiction is shelved by Subject. Our books have been classified according to the
Dewey Decimal System as used in most Public Libraries. This number system keeps
books on the same subject close together. They are also colour coded to help younger
students.
Every book has the correct colour for the subject with the Dewey number label on top
like this:
The shelves have guiding to help with location and we have posters and Subject
Indexes available. Please ask me if you would like more guidance on any aspect of
helping students to locate books.
The table below shows the main Subject Areas, their Dewey Numbers and the Colour
Code we are using:

7. 5) Borrowing from the Library
All books are catalogued onto Junior Librarian, our Library Management System, when
they arrive. Everyone must borrow books using Junior Librarian—even if a book is only
going to be taken out of the Library for a short while. This enables efficient stock
management and gives us useful statistics which then feed back into future stock
purchases. All books borrowed on your behalf from LSE are also catalogued onto
Junior Librarian and issued to you, so that I can keep a record of what we have in
school. Please encourage your students to borrow books and return them on time!
Full details of how to use Junior Librarian to issue and return books can be found in
the red folder on the desk. Please ask me or Mrs Enston if you are unsure how to use
Junior Librarian.
6) Reading Development
Encouraging our students to read:
You are welcome to bring your classes in once a week to use the Library for reading
and borrowing books. I am hoping to make some leaflets to support this work. Please
let me know what your students enjoy reading and encourage them to leave messages
for me in the Message Book on the desk.
Mrs Enston undertakes other activities to support reading such as managing the Puffin
Club, book fairs and competitions. Please talk to her if you want any more information.
7) Information Literacy Skills
Developing skills for the future:
Research and Study Skills: At the Senior School I offer support with teaching
research and study skills such as planning research, locating and evaluating
information, citing sources, avoiding plagiarism and creating bibliographies. I am
planning to offer this kind of service to you in the future, using the Library and
ICT Room as a whole space.
8) Management Information
Useful statistical information:
The Junior Librarian Library Management System enables me to produce useful
reports on borrowing figures by gender, class and year. You will be sent the
borrower histories for all students in your class each term. Please ask if you
would like any other borrowing information for a class or individual student.
9) Feedback
Please give me and Mrs Enston feedback about our library services—the more you tell
us, the better we can make the service for you and your students!
I hope this quick tour of our Library resources and services has been
useful to you!
