High availability is becoming a de-facto requirement of today's applications. Customer-facing IT failures mean directly losing customer revenue and trust, as users have grown accustomed to easily switching service providers for more reliable ones. Lack of internal systems availability block employee productivity and add to the financial burden. Thus, it is critical to have a healthy, performant, resilient IT structure serving as a backbone of conducting your business. But there are no textbook solutions to achieving five 9s availability. Data redundancy, computing clusters, load balancing, fail-over mechanisms, each of these individually addresses one potential issue, but none treats systems in your organisation holistically for maximising business revenue. Silos are a clever method of grouping servers in such a way that they can be scaled both horizontally and vertically, depending on the actual application needs. Most importantly, it frees you from over-optimizing the architecture upfront, by allowing fine adjustments easy to integrate in your Agile workflow.

As online professionals you want to break down organisational silos. But it’s not going to work. Not if you keep talking about “content”, and keep mistaking “strategy” for tactics and operations. Besides, if you did succeed, you’d end up with one big, inflexible and non-scalable silo. Organisational processes are there for good reasons, anyway. But still, more often than not they get in the way of your customers. That’s why your organisation — be it commercial, government or non-profit — should rigorously prioritise your customer’s process over your own. But how? Identify what your customer’s top tasks are, and continuously optimise their related (online and offline) processes. This enables cross-silo teams to work on a common goal, resulting in better products and services, happier customers, and higher revenues and/or lower costs. And you’ll be able to show management that you did that.

Adding the third dimension to a mapping project can take the power of desktop GIS analysis to the next level. In recent years, high-resolution elevation data has become increasingly available, resulting in more precise analytical tools. Much of this trend can be attributed to the expanded availability of LiDAR data and the development of inexpensive software tools that can process and utilize this data. In this presentation we will consider one such application, Blue Marble Geographics’ Global Mapper software, which can work with over 200 spatial file formats, including LiDAR (.las and .laz), and offers an array of tools for generating terrain surfaces, 3D modeling, and terrain analysis. In this presentation, we will explore LiDAR processing functionality of Global Mapper including point cloud visualization, data quality control and reclassification, volumetric calculation, contour generation, linear profiling, watershed delineation, view shed modeling, as well as terrain flattening and cut & fill volume calculation for site planning.
