WHAT IS TWITTER ALL ABOUT ANYWAY? Everyone has their opinions—right? Don’t be shy- raise your hand: bird exhibit, talking about lunch, new tool connecting you to valuable info? Twitter is a micro-blogging tool and social networking service that allows users to post 140 character “tweets” that can be read by their “followers”. It’s been around since 2006 but has only surged to popularity in the last year. As for demographic- both statistics and my observation speak to an older demographic. People argue differently—but for the most part, this is not a teen/college crowd- although it’s moving that direction. Twitter grew 500% year-over-year (Nielsen, 2010) However, user growth at the end of 2009 has slowed to 3.5% per month according to Hubspot From what I’ve read, people are now familiar with how the tool works, now we have to train people how to use it correctly.
WHAT IS IT? Social networking site mainly used for professional networking such as finding a job, or finding a new employee About 40 million people using this site WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? It’s a way to use your personal network to find outstanding employees without having to use Craig’s List. It’s a way to gain exposure/awareness. Organizations are the people behind them, right? There is a portion of the site called Linked In for Good ( http://www.linkedin.com/good ) which allows you to add a badge to your profile for an org you believe in. HOW WILL I BE SUCCESSFUL? If you set up your Outlook to be synched with Linked In so that when you add a new contact, you can automatically add them on Linked in too. "LinkedIn is about identifying a task or a business objective, and then finding someone who can help." How might I harvest this person for the future? Join groups—college alumni associations, Sac Biz Journal, etc.
