1. BBC 3 documentary (culture in the
digital age) pitch
1
How social media is effecting the
way young people think
2. My idea for the documentary
• Our task is to create a 10-15 minute factual documentary about ‘culture in the digital age’ for BBC 3
• My documentary is going to be about how social media is effecting young people’s outlook on the world. I believe it is
creating an echo chamber of negativity where somewhat radical ideologies can and are being spread like diseases online.
• For example-
• -Andrew Tate, a social media personality turned criminal, has pretty much indoctrinated an entire generation of young men
into believing that they are superior to women and many other sexist things
• -also, the ACAB movement or the KAM movement, both stated on TikTok and spread across the platform, mainly to
vulnerable young women.
• My documentary will be investigating movements and ideologies like these in an effort to bring awareness to and expose
this ever growing culture of hate.
3. What it will include
• In the documentary I'm including many different clips of pieces of content, such as TikTok's and YouTube videos, all
content creators will be full credited in the description of the video I will also conduct a series of interviews on
multiple people in my class, (who are all within the target audience age range). the questions relate to the topic and
may be something along the lines of
• -do you feel like your opinions have ever been changed by social media?
• or
• - have you ever seen something on a social media app that you thought was inappropriate?
• the intent of these questions is to see what people think of social media and the effect it ma be having on them and
their peers, if any at all
• also included in my documentary will be footage that will relate to the subject such as a person scrolling their phone
or somebody alone looking upset, (as I will be referencing how social media usage can be linked to teenage
depression) the imagery will always match the mood and theme of the video. The purpose of this is to have a visual
stimulant rather than just a black screen which may disinterest the viewer.
• I will also look into the modern day culture of shame and why young people feel embarrassed about themselves even
though they aren’t doing anything wrong and why this is a growing problem which is causing high rates of teen
anxiety and depression.
• For the footage I will mainly use archive footage and videos from TikTok and YouTube that relate to the voice over
• Finally I will be using the videos of the people from the interviews (with consent)
4. HOW DOES MY IDEA FIT THE EXPECTATIONS
OF THE BRIEF
• Our brief was to create a documentary for an age demographic of 16-24, we
were given the broad theme of 'culture in the digital' from which I have derived
my idea of investigating how social media apps may be changing the way young
people think weather that's in a positive way or a negative one
• I believe that my idea meets the expectations of our brief as my it involves young
people's (our target audience) culture and how social media is effecting it. I think
that this will attract a younger audience as in my audience research I discovered
that people prefer to watch documentaries that involve there culture and are
interested in how it is changing, Therefore I believe that i have met the briefs
expectations as my documentary
• -will be between 10-15 minutes long
• -and is about how digital media and how the people on those platforms can effect
how young people think which will have and effect on our culture.
5. Audience research
• For my audience research I have conducted a focus group
consisting of a group of my peers, I asked them various questions
relating to my project and gathered their responses on a video
• I've taken their responses and analysed them to make sure my
documentary will suit our audience
• I also did a 5 question survey and did the same thing with the
responses to that
• On the next page is the survey results and below this powerpoint is a
link to the focus group video
7. Example documentaries
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gWgEFMCHRc
• This documentary is about a young man named kyle who was born with down syndrome but
is making an inspiring mark in the body building world and isn’t letting his disability hold him
back, what I like about this documentary is that it tells a heart-warming story and the
cinematography helps show the emotions of his family
• For example, his step dad is show here on the verge or tears over how proud he is of his
step son and the different camera angles (having the camera not pointed directly at his face
makes it feels more like a conversation rather than him being interviewed for the
documentary) help perpetuate his happiness without feeling too invasive.
• This documentary is a similar length to the first one but this one is
about the events of 9/11 and the timeline of how it all unfolded
• What I like about this one and what intend to imitate is the use of
archived footage instead of footage filmed purely for the
documentary like the previous one which had lots of shots of kyle
that you can tell where filmed just for the documentary .
