20 Tips for Parents
For Successful Parent-Teacher
Conferences in the U.S.
Parents2Partners.orgBullying StopsNow.org
Teachers want to work as partners with
families, and to share about your child’s
progress. At times, they often feel as if they
spend more time complying with regulations
than with actually getting to teach, so they are
extremely glad to have your help in the
process. Here are some strategies to make the
most of the visits with your child’s teacher, so
that together you can boost the child’s
academic success:
Parents2Partners.orgBullying StopsNow.org
1.Show up and take advantage to have
visibility at school. Know that other children
pay attention!
2.Be on time and make the most of the
meeting. It’s your chance to give and get
information.
3.Talk about your child’s strengths - it gives
teachers a great starting point to address
areas of need.
Parents2Partners.orgBullying StopsNow.org
4. Ask questions! The teacher don’t want to
talk the entire time. They also need the
insight.
5. If your child is struggling with an issue,
bring it up face-to-face.
Parents2Partners.orgBullying StopsNow.org
5. Sometimes teachers get caught-up in the
educational jargon (IEP, ELL, LEP , and on
and on… until you may feel like you need
CPR!) Ask them to clarify, until you’re sure
you understand.
Parents2Partners.orgBullying StopsNow.org
6. No one to watch your child during the
appointment? No problem! Bring him/her
along, and grab some coloring paper and
crayons. You can also let the teacher know
in advance that you are bringing a special
family member.
7. Teachers feel awkward if your child acts
disrespectful towards you at the meeting.
They are likely to put the class rules into
practice, because they can’t stand it and
neither should you.
Parents2Partners.orgBullying StopsNow.org
8. Ask specific questions about how the child
interacts with his/her classmates.
9. Ask what they feel are your child’s
strengths and weaknesses. The answers
may surprise you.
10. Share with teachers what works at home.
If you already have a system that works for
your child, that will be helpful.
Parents2Partners.orgBullying StopsNow.org
11. Keep your promise about the call or e-
mail follow-up you suggested.
12.Teachers in the U.S are flattered when you
ask them to recommend books and other
resources that are most appropriate for your
child.
13.They love your offers to help at home or in
school!
Parents2Partners.orgBullying StopsNow.org
14. Your child needs to be at school every
day, even if they have good grades. They
cannot make up the missed instruction, or
the missed interactions with their
classmates.
15. Please plan your vacations for the
scheduled school breaks. They do not like
being asked if it is OK to pull your child out
of school for vacations. They have rigorous
standards they must meet, and they count
on you to support attendance.
Parents2Partners.orgBullying StopsNow.org
16. They share your child’s weaknesses to
help you address them through home
support. While behavioral shortcomings
should be corrected, children should never
be punished for academic challenges.
17.They cannot give information about other
students ,even if you want to invite them to
a party. You may send invitations to school
with your child.
Parents2Partners.orgBullying StopsNow.org
18. Teachers are not trained in all the
disabilities children might have. Please
share the specifics of your situation with
they, and recommend books that might
help. They are learners too.
19. Don’t feel as if the 15 minute
appointment slot is all the time you can
have with the teacher. They will be glad to
have further meetings, along with phone
and email contact, to ensure we do the best
we can for your child.
Parents2Partners.orgBullying StopsNow.org
20. Know that you are the most important
teacher at home. School staff members
value you and cherish your visits.
