• A small, diverse team of people within the
NHS that supports change agents and
builds change agency.
• We tune into the latest change thinking and
practice in healthcare and other industries
around the world.
• The team has emerged through
years of supporting change
in the NHS and the wider
health and care system.
#BetterBirths
• 4.7 million population
• 9000 square miles
• 9 CCGs
• 12 LAs (8 Unitary, 4 County
Councils)
• 14 Acute Trusts
• 4 MH trusts
• 6 STP’s/LMS’s
• 50,000 live births
• Distance between our furthest
reaches is similar distance as
London to Newcastle
• Limited transport infrastructure –
both road and public transport and
further west you go the slower it
gets by road or rail

My Story
• HELLP syndrome at 24 weeks’
pregnant (rare, life-threatening
pregnancy complication – can cause
multiple organ failure unless baby is
born).
• My son Hugo weighed just 420
grams (about the same size as
a tin of baked beans)
• Hugo lived for 35 days.
• He was too small, and
premature. His treatment was
withdrawn.

• I was transferred to a hospital two hours
away from my home, where Hugo was
born.
• Lack of communication between maternity,
neonatal, and ICU (staff argued over
whose responsibility I was).
• Lack of communication between tertiary
services and my local hospital.
• Lack of follow-up support.
Complications

Life after…
• Diagnosed with post-
traumatic stress
disorder.
• Finding appropriate
support took more than
two years.
• Trying to find a ‘new
normal’, a way of living
a life unexpected.

  • 2. • A small, diverse team of people within the NHS that supports change agents and builds change agency. • We tune into the latest change thinking and practice in healthcare and other industries around the world. • The team has emerged through years of supporting change in the NHS and the wider health and care system. #BetterBirths
  • 3. • 4.7 million population • 9000 square miles • 9 CCGs • 12 LAs (8 Unitary, 4 County Councils) • 14 Acute Trusts • 4 MH trusts • 6 STP’s/LMS’s • 50,000 live births • Distance between our furthest reaches is similar distance as London to Newcastle • Limited transport infrastructure – both road and public transport and further west you go the slower it gets by road or rail South West Clinical Network #BetterBirths

My Story • HELLP syndrome at 24 weeks’ pregnant (rare, life-threatening pregnancy complication – can cause multiple organ failure unless baby is born). • My son Hugo weighed just 420 grams (about the same size as a tin of baked beans) • Hugo lived for 35 days. • He was too small, and premature. His treatment was withdrawn. #BetterBirths
  • 6. • I was transferred to a hospital two hours away from my home, where Hugo was born. • Lack of communication between maternity, neonatal, and ICU (staff argued over whose responsibility I was). • Lack of communication between tertiary services and my local hospital. • Lack of follow-up support. Complications #BetterBirths
  • 7. Life after… • Diagnosed with post- traumatic stress disorder. • Finding appropriate support took more than two years. • Trying to find a ‘new normal’, a way of living a life unexpected. #BetterBirths
  • 8. My new normal… • I started a blog: Headspace Perspective • I am a patient leader and campaigner – #HugosLegacy #MatExp • Co-led the Nobody’s Patient project with Maternity Challenge Funding #BetterBirths
  • 9. Campaigning… • Campaigning for improved support for bereaved parents • Raising awareness of pregnancy complications, and issues affecting neonatal families. • Spoken at House of Commons, and House of Lords #BetterBirths
