Team up to Solve the Skills Gap
In partnership with leading employers, commitment will help address the skills gap in the United
States, spur job growth, and aid economic recovery.
CHICAGO, IL - June 8, 2012 –LearnUp, a technology startup in Palo Alto, CA, today announced its
commitment to action at the Clinton Global Initiative America (CGI America) meeting to enable national
and global employers to share job training content online with job seekers, including over 100,000 students
at community colleges throughout California. LearnUp will partner with the California Community
Colleges and Corporate Voices for Working Families to help community college students gain the in-
demand skills employers need and connect directly with employers for employment opportunities.
LearnUp is a real-time, online job skills training platform that offers a breakthrough approach for job
seekers to learn skills from employers and professionals, track progress on a “skills resume,” and receive
job offers. An example includes training content for copy center associate jobs from Staples and sales
associate roles from Gap. Leading employers, including Staples, Safeway, Gap, KPMG LLP, Prudential,
TeleTech, and others, are already using LearnUp’s site.
There are 25 million unemployed and underemployed Americans, and a very high youth unemployment
rate. Yet 52% of U.S. employers report difficulty filling jobs due to lack of available talent. In today’s
economy, the skills required in the workforce are changing so dynamically that it’s hard for job seekers to
know which skills are in demand.
LearnUp’s innovative platform makes it easy for employers to communicate their needs directly with job
seekers and educational institutions like the California Community Colleges. This transparency of needs in
real-time enables the LearnUp platform to serve as a “virtual employer advisory board” and help guide the
California Community Colleges and Corporate Voices’ emerging programs to aggregate skills requirements
by specific industry sectors, including retail, technology and others, and to align offerings to truly meet the
needs of business.
“LearnUp has the potential to not only bridge the skills gap for employers but to also offer content
guidance to our community college partners. Our corporate members look to us for best practice business
solutions and we think this partnership will help serve their talent needs,” says John Wilcox, Executive
Director, Corporate Voices.
“Working with LearnUp and Corporate Voices gives us greater visibility into the evolving skill sets and
needs of a specific industry sector,” said Van Ton-Quinlivan, Vice Chancellor of Workforce and Economic
Development of California’s Community Colleges. “LearnUp offers a fresh and innovative approach to
how business and education can work together to close the skills gap. Doing what matters for jobs and the
economy means using real-time labor market information and leveraging platforms such as LearnUp, which
allow the Community Colleges to align their instruction with the needs of business in mind,” Ton-Quinlivan
said.
2. “We’re excited to partner with community colleges and employers to build the skills of the workforce,”
stated Alexis Ringwald, co-founder and CEO of LearnUp. “We see the ability to apply this platform to any
employer whose skill needs are no longer static, including technology, retail, healthcare, advanced
manufacturing, energy, and more. Our technology connects people with the 21st century skills that
employers demand, and with the support of our partners, serves as a real solution to our country’s skills
gap.”
