The Battle of Issus in 333 BC was fought between the armies of Alexander the Great of Macedon and Darius III of Persia near the town of Issus in southern Anatolia. Darius had a much larger army but Alexander was able to trap the Persians in the narrow pass near Issus, cutting off their escape and inflicting heavy losses on Darius' forces. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for Alexander, allowing him to push further into Asia Minor and begin his conquest of the Persian Empire.
