1. DELI DISHES DELIVERED TO YOUR DESK
Posted on November 24, 2014 by laurencjourno
Whites Deli, which opened late October has been such a success Alison
White the owner will be launching her own app for the deli whereby local
businesses can order and pay for their food through their phone and have
their food hand delivered to their desk.
The deli has brought a fantastic rustic mix of English, Italian and American
dishes to Headingley, which have never been available before. After working
in the area for a while, Alison thought long and hard about what new and
original idea she could bring to Headingley.
Face Facts Consultant Ltd, the marketing company located above Whites Deli
is also owned by Alison,
she said: “I decided to open another business as my staff at Face Facts
struggle for any real decent places to go and eat in Headingley. We did loads
of local area research before we opened to ensure that we gave Headingley
what it really needed and not what we thought it did.”
The deli has brought an entirely new food range to Headingley. The
Homecooked, wholesome, reasonably priced produce that’s on offer caters
for all tastes with a modern industrial interior to enjoy whilst visiting. As the
Deli is something that has never been available in the area before theres no
surprise that the opening was such a success.
The Deli is already inundated with bookings and is bursting at the seams with
extremely busy lunchtimes so the launch of the app should help with building
an even bigger reputation.
The app will work like a restaurant taking table orders. Each of the local
businesses will be given a unique number much like a table number which the
Deli will use to identify who has ordered what.
Not only does the app allow quick call in orders but you can also order food
for every type of occasion from office meetings to social events.
Alison will be launching the app in the near future ready to battle with the
lunch time rushes.
2. HEADINGLEY NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN GIVEN THE GO AHEAD
Posted on November 30, 2014 by laurencjourno
Leeds city council has given permission to go ahead and prepare the
Headingley neighbourhood plan to help develop a substantial inclusive and
mixed community. Neighbourhood planning was previously made possible my
the Localism Act 2011, so far Leeds is ahead of any other city or town with
over two dozen plans in the area. Headingley is now part of one of those
plans.
The Neighbourhood Forum consisting of people who live in and work in the
area as well as local councillors now have to prepare the plan. The marked
areas of concern are the lack of community balance, the noise, rubbish and
traffic, and the alcohol economy.
The Neighbourhood Plan is aiming ‘to promote and improve the social,
economic and environmental well-being’ of Headingley.
As the council have given the go ahead it is now down to the local community
to help it happen, by attending meetings and joining local steering groups to
show their support.
The next step of the broad structure is to put the plan together, this will be
happening over the next few months with the help of local groups and the
public.
The majority of the population of Headingley is in fact students as there are
three universities located near by.
Richard Tyler the chair of the interim forum believes its important to get the
help of all the residents including students,
he said: “ we have reps from Leeds university union and also Leeds Beckett
on the forum and they will take the information back to their unions and
arrange further consultation with other students. Although two thirds of
Headingley’s population is students and it is important to get their input, it’s
the long term residents who are more involved. But the main outcome is to
obviously make the Headingley area a nice neighbourhood to live in for
everyone.”
The next meeting will be taking place on 3 December at St. Michaels church
in Headingley. The chair of the forum, Reverend Tony Whatmough will be
attending the meeting to discuss the plans further. Students and local
residents are encouraged to attend and take part in the development of the
forum plan.
3. DON’T BECOME THE TARGET FOR FESTIVE BURGLARY
Posted on December 29, 2014 by laurencjourno
Christmas time is the most joyful time of the year for many people. However
more often than not it’s the time of year where the most burglaries occur.
Headingley is full to the brim with students who receive the latest gifts and
gadgets for Christmas. During the festive period is it essential that people
remember to keep their windows and doors locked. West Yorkshire police are
doing what they can to make sure more officers are on patrol in the
Headingley area. Many students will leave their house vacant over the festive
period and officers are urging people to make sure they play their part in
prevention by “locking up and lighting up” before leaving as this discourages
thieves.
Chris Joyce, Force Crime Prevention Officer, said: “Our officers see on a daily
basis the devastating impact that being burgled can have on individuals and
families. While a laptop or camera can be replaced, unless you have backed
up your documents and photos elsewhere you might never get them back.”
West Yorkshire police are insuring their officers are carrying out targeted
operational activity over the next coming months to help lower the number of
burglaries.
Recent statistics show that the number of burglaries that occur in Headingley
from November till the beginning of February are significantly higher than the
rest of the year. West Yorkshire police also said that rubbish left outside
houses can encourage thieves as it’s a free advertisement for what on offer
inside the house.
Graph showing the high number of burglaries over the festive months
Mr Joyce added: “With the longer and darker nights now upon us, we are
urging residents to consider what the true cost of burglary would be to them
and what they can do to protect their home.
“Crime prevention doesn’t need to cost huge sums of money. By taking steps
such as always locking doors and windows, not leaving cash or valuables on
show and leaving a light, radio or television on when you leave the house, you
can significantly reduce your chances of being a victim of burglary.”
4. TIM GOODALL TO REPRESENT THE GREEN PARTY IN LEEDS
NORTH WEST ELECTION
Posted on December 29, 2014 by laurencjourno
After joining the Green party in 1989 Tim Goodall has been selected to be the
prospective parliamentary candidate for Leeds North West. Tim, Secretary of
Headingley Green Party in 2013, as well as Campaigns Officer for Leeds
Green Party in 2014, will be representing Headingley’s Green Party in the
Leeds North West general election.
After actively taking part in canvassing in Headingley ever year leading up to
the vote, Tim has made an impact in the number people voting for the party.
Goodall said: “The Green Party nationally has doubled its membership this
year and in Leeds membership is up almost 300%. Membership in Leeds NW
has more than doubled since February. The Green Party came a close
second in Headingley in the city council elections in May 2014 so we are
regularly out canvassing and leafleting in order to win in May 2015.”
After attending Leeds Beckett University’s politics event on engaging young
people in politics. Goodall spoke, along with representatives from Labour and
the Lib Dems. A straw poll of the students at the end showed that 5 were
thinking of voting Labour, 1 Liberal Democrat, 2 others (Tory or UKIP) and
about 20 said they are going to vote Green. The regular canvassing Goodall
does in Headingley is proving to have a positive outcome as more and more
people are voting, this should push him forward in the 2015 elections.
Not only is Headingley Green Party being represented in the LNW election,
Goodall is also trying to set up a Real Junk Food Project in Headingley similar
to that of the one in Armley. The Real Junk Food Project is a collaborative
effort between catering professionals and activists to bring about a radical
change in our food system. The project in Armlet proved to be a success so
having something similar in the Headingley area would really make an impact.
Goodall and The Green Party want to bring this campaign to the area more
than anything. As well as the positive environmental impacts of reducing
edible food waste the project also has clear social benefits.
He said: “We are involved in campaigns to keep the NHS public, to stop TTIP
and to make Headingley a more attractive environment and more child
friendly.”

5. PEDESTRIAN BOTTLENECK TO BE TACKLED IN HEADINGLEY
Posted on January 30, 2015 by laurencjourno
Labour councillors for Headingley Neil Walshaw, Janette Walker and
Jonathan Pryor are delighted to announce that plans to improve the
pedestrian traffic in central Headingley are underway.
Pedestrian traffic has been an ongoing problem in Headingley for many years,
with the Leeds Beckett campus only minutes away and the Arndale centre
across the road, Headingley sees a huge amount of pedestrians passing
through every day and the numbers keep growing.
The Labour councillors for Headingley are proud to provide £5000 in Ward
Based Initiative (WBI) to help fund the much needed improvements at the bus
stop opposite the Arndale centre located on Otley Road.
The main bus stop is one of the busiest in the area and sees most of the
pedestrians in Headingley passing through. The pavement is a narrow and
the old metal railing along the edge stop people from walking around the bus
stop to get past, this causes whats know as a ‘bottleneck’ throughout the day
especially during peak times.
Pedestrians walking to get past the bus stop are forced to walk across the
small grass verge near by to avoid walking on the road trying to get past the
people waiting for buses. Over the years this has ruined the grass patch
owned by Bloom Group but it also causes many collisions between the
pedestrians walking past and people waiting for busses.
Councillor Neil Walshaw, Labour Headingley said: “we’re really pleased to be
able to fund improvements which will address this long standing issue, which
will be of benefit to all pedestrians in the area. Bus stops should not obstruct
footpaths and the redesigned pavement will hopefully solve this issue. It’s
important that the proposals have the backing of local businesses and
Headingley in Bloom and i thanks them for their support.”
The proposed improvements are to be carried out by Council Highways
officers and will widen the pedestrian areas around the bus stop and remove
the metal railings to make space for additional paving to be laid down.
The Headingley Councillors have taken up the issue due to many complaints
from residents and commuters. Local businesses and the Headingley in
Bloom group both support the proposed improvements.
6. LEEDS RHINOS USE CANNABIS LIGHTS TO GROW GRASS
Posted on January 30, 2015 by laurencjourno
Leeds Rhinos the Rugby league club located Headingley have been given a
number of lights previously used to grow cannabis in a near by house.
West Yorkshire police confiscated the lights from a Cannabis farm in North
West Leeds on Tuesday but donated them to the club to help save money.
PC Kevin Hussay, inner north west team, noticed that each time the police
uncover a large scale cannabis farm they have to then pay for skips to
dispose the electrical equipment and soil. Recently officers from North West
Neighbourhood policing team have arranged to pass on equipment to others
for legitimate use.
PC Hussay looked into whether or the local community could put them to
good use. Leeds Rhinos currently use special lighting to grow grass on worn
areas of the pitch. The stadium which is home ground for the Rhinos team
and Yorkshire carnegie matches is also used for university and school
matches, so the grass is constantly getting damaged, donating the lights to
them was the best option as they would get a substantial amount of use out of
them.
He said: “We already have an excellent relationship with Leeds Rhinos and
they have worked with us on a number of community initiatives with schools
and young people over the years.
“When I found that we could donate equipment seized from cannabis farms to
local groups I discussed it with their head groundsman to see how we might
be able to help them out.”
The police received a tip off about the house growing Cannabis, after they
forced their way into the house the found the whole house fitted out with
sophisticated lighting systems growing over 500 plants.
One Veitnmease man was arrested at the scene with suspicion he was
involved, he was charged to appear in court.
The club collected around 50 lights ready to use on their pitch in the next
coming weeks.
Head Groundsman Ryan Golding commented, “We have a great relationship
with the Police, especially through the work of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation
and this just further grows those links. The lights will certainly be put to good
use especially at this time of year.”
The unused soil and pots removed from the house have been donated to
Brudenell primary school by the police for its community garden.
7. LS6 RESIDENTS FURIOUS AT THE LOSS OF VICTORIA ROAD
PLAYING FIELDS
Posted on February 12, 2015 by laurencjourno
Labour councillors recently voted in favour for allowing developers to build
houses and an unwanted supermarket on the playing fields off Victoria Road,
Headingley. Many of the local residents and campaigners for the area
protested against this development happening however lost the battle when
Leeds City Council gave permission.
The grounds, formally owned by Leeds Girls High School now owned by the
Grammar School at Leeds are home to sports playing fields and a swimming
pool. Two things that are severely lacking in the area for the use of the
community.
Local resident and campaigner, Penny Goodman said:”what’s happened here
seems incredibly short-sighted and thoughtless to me. The area around the
site is badly short of green space and sporting facilities, both for public use
and for local schools. All the available research shows very clearly that
physical exercise and green space are essential to improving health,
extending life-spans, and increasing people’s life chances.
The Victoria Road site already ‘had’ playing fields, a sports hall and a
swimming pool – but rather than let the local community get the benefit of
these, the council has allowed the Grammar School at Leeds to sell them off
to be built on instead.”
A Labour party leaflet given to residents in April last year said that Labour
councillors and Labour’s Parliamentary candidate were actually fighting to
save the sports facilities on Victoria Road, however Labour have now voted to
allow the housing and supermarket development on the field.
Headingley Councillor Martin Hamilton said, “This part of Leeds is one of the
most densely populated and has the least amount of green space for its
residents not to mention the health problems which the retention and
development of sports facilities could alleviate.”
The loss of the sports facilities has contributed to the school crisis in the area.
Schools are crying out for facilities just like those that have been knocked
down, however the redevelopment on the land has already started despite the
cry for help.
Gred Hulholland MP spoke in a recent news letter about the situation, stating
the last thing Headingley needs is more housing and another supermarket
when there are many empty houses. The loss of the precious LS6 green
space is still causing upset and anger in the area.

9. GREAT SUCCESS FOR YORKSHIRE’S FIRST CEREAL HOUSE
Posted on February 27, 2015 by laurencjourno
After realising there was a gap in the market Leeds Becket University
graduates Jen Gibb and Zoe Blogg, 23 decided to take a leap and open what
has become the second cereal house in the UK
Moo’d cereal house located at 59 Otley Road in student heartland Headingley
offers more than 100 different flavours of cereal and 6 types of milk as well as
a unique idea of cereal ‘cocktails’.
The business owners want their ‘cereal house’ to have a bar theme combining
the ale pump of milk and the breakfast cocktails appealing to the students in
the area, making sure the house isn’t just a novelty you visit once.
Best friends Jen and Zoe started planning their business venture before they
graduated last may but have now finally opened the doors to the students of
Headingley.
Jen said: “We used to go out for breakfast all the time but we’d always enjoy
cereal more than stodgy other places. When we were hungover we didn’t
always want rubbish food. Then we just thought why don’t we open our own
cereal place, we want cereal we can’t find it anywhere. We saw a gap in the
market and there was no where around that did that.”
After having such a successful opening they have now decided they want to
explore more ideas for their business. Many customers have requested take
out after visiting the shop, after receiving so many requests Jen said this is
their next step to make the business more successful.
Jen Said: “We get a lot of people who want take away menus, I think the
businesses around here like it for their lunch. So that shows we are getting a
great response,we are going to do take out and also introduce cereal cakes
and porridge.”
There are also thoughts on opening a second shop as the first has been such
a success. After sourcing all their things locally they have decided to keep the
shop as local as possible from the ingredients down to the sideboards.
Over the next few months guest cereals form a different part of the world will
be introduced for a new flavor every time people visit.
The back are of the shop is also being turned into a gallery for people to come
a display their work free of charge. This is a great opportunity for the students
in the area to get their work seen.
Moo’d is open from 8am, serving bowls from just £2.

10. HEADINGLEY CRICKET GROUND GETS NEW FLOODLIGHTS WITH
SPECIAL YORKSHIRE DESIGN
Posted on March 2, 2015 by laurencjourno
Headingley Cricket ground, the home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club getting
ready to erect new floodlights with very special Yorkshire design.
The 56 meter floodlights will be situated at each of the four corners of the
grounds enabling the club to hold regular matches at night in time for the new
season starting.
The unique design of the floodlights head frame is being made by lighting
company Abacus Limited, each head frame will be shaped like the Yorkshire
White Rose, a synonymous which is known across the country.
David Ryder, operations director at Yorkshire, said: “This design process
started back in March 2014, when the idea was first established. We didn’t
think such an intricate and uniquely-shaped head frame would be possible,
but (lighting company) Abacus just looked at the challenge and took it on.
“The sight of these four white roses standing proud above the ground as a
permanent light to shine on Headingley will be really symbolic.”
Four trenches have now been dug out around the concourse of the grounds,
each measuring around 15ft by 10ft with a massive 80 tonnes of concrete put
in place to stabilise the lights in all weather conditions. The overall cost of the
floodlight installation is estimated at £1.8 million, with a £700,000 grant
coming from England and Wales Cricket Board.
Howard Ferguson, Operations Manager at YCCC said: “We’re hoping the
head frames will be known throughout the world as Headingly’s floodlights,
they’re not just the standard square or round ones. We were told they are
going to be the brightest in the country, until someone else gets some better
ones.
The process started in early January 2015, but the first shaft is due to be
installed later this week.
The instalments of the new floodlight is only the first step in the multi million
pound development planned for the club. Yorkshire CCC wants to transform
Headingley Cricket Ground into one of the finest cricket venues in the world.
The proposed redevelopment ideas of the ground over the next 20 years,
includes the installation of floodlights and the rebuilding of the North/South
Stand, adjoining the rugby ground. The capacity of the cricket ground will
increase from 17,000 to 20,000 in the redevelopment.
The shared rugby and cricket stand is going to be redeveloped, the stadium
needs a new stand and they’re hoping to get it in time for the 2019 season as
it’s set to be a big season for the YCCC.

  • 1. 1. DELI DISHES DELIVERED TO YOUR DESK Posted on November 24, 2014 by laurencjourno Whites Deli, which opened late October has been such a success Alison White the owner will be launching her own app for the deli whereby local businesses can order and pay for their food through their phone and have their food hand delivered to their desk. The deli has brought a fantastic rustic mix of English, Italian and American dishes to Headingley, which have never been available before. After working in the area for a while, Alison thought long and hard about what new and original idea she could bring to Headingley. Face Facts Consultant Ltd, the marketing company located above Whites Deli is also owned by Alison, she said: “I decided to open another business as my staff at Face Facts struggle for any real decent places to go and eat in Headingley. We did loads of local area research before we opened to ensure that we gave Headingley what it really needed and not what we thought it did.” The deli has brought an entirely new food range to Headingley. The Homecooked, wholesome, reasonably priced produce that’s on offer caters for all tastes with a modern industrial interior to enjoy whilst visiting. As the Deli is something that has never been available in the area before theres no surprise that the opening was such a success. The Deli is already inundated with bookings and is bursting at the seams with extremely busy lunchtimes so the launch of the app should help with building an even bigger reputation. The app will work like a restaurant taking table orders. Each of the local businesses will be given a unique number much like a table number which the Deli will use to identify who has ordered what. Not only does the app allow quick call in orders but you can also order food for every type of occasion from office meetings to social events. Alison will be launching the app in the near future ready to battle with the lunch time rushes. 2. HEADINGLEY NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN GIVEN THE GO AHEAD Posted on November 30, 2014 by laurencjourno Leeds city council has given permission to go ahead and prepare the Headingley neighbourhood plan to help develop a substantial inclusive and mixed community. Neighbourhood planning was previously made possible my the Localism Act 2011, so far Leeds is ahead of any other city or town with over two dozen plans in the area. Headingley is now part of one of those plans. The Neighbourhood Forum consisting of people who live in and work in the area as well as local councillors now have to prepare the plan. The marked areas of concern are the lack of community balance, the noise, rubbish and traffic, and the alcohol economy. The Neighbourhood Plan is aiming ‘to promote and improve the social, economic and environmental well-being’ of Headingley.
  • 2. As the council have given the go ahead it is now down to the local community to help it happen, by attending meetings and joining local steering groups to show their support. The next step of the broad structure is to put the plan together, this will be happening over the next few months with the help of local groups and the public. The majority of the population of Headingley is in fact students as there are three universities located near by. Richard Tyler the chair of the interim forum believes its important to get the help of all the residents including students, he said: “ we have reps from Leeds university union and also Leeds Beckett on the forum and they will take the information back to their unions and arrange further consultation with other students. Although two thirds of Headingley’s population is students and it is important to get their input, it’s the long term residents who are more involved. But the main outcome is to obviously make the Headingley area a nice neighbourhood to live in for everyone.” The next meeting will be taking place on 3 December at St. Michaels church in Headingley. The chair of the forum, Reverend Tony Whatmough will be attending the meeting to discuss the plans further. Students and local residents are encouraged to attend and take part in the development of the forum plan. 3. DON’T BECOME THE TARGET FOR FESTIVE BURGLARY Posted on December 29, 2014 by laurencjourno Christmas time is the most joyful time of the year for many people. However more often than not it’s the time of year where the most burglaries occur. Headingley is full to the brim with students who receive the latest gifts and gadgets for Christmas. During the festive period is it essential that people remember to keep their windows and doors locked. West Yorkshire police are doing what they can to make sure more officers are on patrol in the Headingley area. Many students will leave their house vacant over the festive period and officers are urging people to make sure they play their part in prevention by “locking up and lighting up” before leaving as this discourages thieves. Chris Joyce, Force Crime Prevention Officer, said: “Our officers see on a daily basis the devastating impact that being burgled can have on individuals and families. While a laptop or camera can be replaced, unless you have backed up your documents and photos elsewhere you might never get them back.” West Yorkshire police are insuring their officers are carrying out targeted operational activity over the next coming months to help lower the number of burglaries. Recent statistics show that the number of burglaries that occur in Headingley from November till the beginning of February are significantly higher than the rest of the year. West Yorkshire police also said that rubbish left outside houses can encourage thieves as it’s a free advertisement for what on offer inside the house.
  • 3. Graph showing the high number of burglaries over the festive months Mr Joyce added: “With the longer and darker nights now upon us, we are urging residents to consider what the true cost of burglary would be to them and what they can do to protect their home. “Crime prevention doesn’t need to cost huge sums of money. By taking steps such as always locking doors and windows, not leaving cash or valuables on show and leaving a light, radio or television on when you leave the house, you can significantly reduce your chances of being a victim of burglary.” 4. TIM GOODALL TO REPRESENT THE GREEN PARTY IN LEEDS NORTH WEST ELECTION Posted on December 29, 2014 by laurencjourno After joining the Green party in 1989 Tim Goodall has been selected to be the prospective parliamentary candidate for Leeds North West. Tim, Secretary of Headingley Green Party in 2013, as well as Campaigns Officer for Leeds Green Party in 2014, will be representing Headingley’s Green Party in the Leeds North West general election. After actively taking part in canvassing in Headingley ever year leading up to the vote, Tim has made an impact in the number people voting for the party. Goodall said: “The Green Party nationally has doubled its membership this year and in Leeds membership is up almost 300%. Membership in Leeds NW has more than doubled since February. The Green Party came a close second in Headingley in the city council elections in May 2014 so we are regularly out canvassing and leafleting in order to win in May 2015.” After attending Leeds Beckett University’s politics event on engaging young people in politics. Goodall spoke, along with representatives from Labour and the Lib Dems. A straw poll of the students at the end showed that 5 were thinking of voting Labour, 1 Liberal Democrat, 2 others (Tory or UKIP) and about 20 said they are going to vote Green. The regular canvassing Goodall does in Headingley is proving to have a positive outcome as more and more people are voting, this should push him forward in the 2015 elections. Not only is Headingley Green Party being represented in the LNW election, Goodall is also trying to set up a Real Junk Food Project in Headingley similar to that of the one in Armley. The Real Junk Food Project is a collaborative effort between catering professionals and activists to bring about a radical change in our food system. The project in Armlet proved to be a success so having something similar in the Headingley area would really make an impact. Goodall and The Green Party want to bring this campaign to the area more than anything. As well as the positive environmental impacts of reducing edible food waste the project also has clear social benefits. He said: “We are involved in campaigns to keep the NHS public, to stop TTIP and to make Headingley a more attractive environment and more child friendly.” Twitter: @TimmoGoodall @TheGreenParty Use the hashtag #VoteGreen2015 get involved with the election.
  • 4. 5. PEDESTRIAN BOTTLENECK TO BE TACKLED IN HEADINGLEY Posted on January 30, 2015 by laurencjourno Labour councillors for Headingley Neil Walshaw, Janette Walker and Jonathan Pryor are delighted to announce that plans to improve the pedestrian traffic in central Headingley are underway. Pedestrian traffic has been an ongoing problem in Headingley for many years, with the Leeds Beckett campus only minutes away and the Arndale centre across the road, Headingley sees a huge amount of pedestrians passing through every day and the numbers keep growing. The Labour councillors for Headingley are proud to provide £5000 in Ward Based Initiative (WBI) to help fund the much needed improvements at the bus stop opposite the Arndale centre located on Otley Road. The main bus stop is one of the busiest in the area and sees most of the pedestrians in Headingley passing through. The pavement is a narrow and the old metal railing along the edge stop people from walking around the bus stop to get past, this causes whats know as a ‘bottleneck’ throughout the day especially during peak times. Pedestrians walking to get past the bus stop are forced to walk across the small grass verge near by to avoid walking on the road trying to get past the people waiting for buses. Over the years this has ruined the grass patch owned by Bloom Group but it also causes many collisions between the pedestrians walking past and people waiting for busses. Councillor Neil Walshaw, Labour Headingley said: “we’re really pleased to be able to fund improvements which will address this long standing issue, which will be of benefit to all pedestrians in the area. Bus stops should not obstruct footpaths and the redesigned pavement will hopefully solve this issue. It’s important that the proposals have the backing of local businesses and Headingley in Bloom and i thanks them for their support.” The proposed improvements are to be carried out by Council Highways officers and will widen the pedestrian areas around the bus stop and remove the metal railings to make space for additional paving to be laid down. The Headingley Councillors have taken up the issue due to many complaints from residents and commuters. Local businesses and the Headingley in Bloom group both support the proposed improvements. 6. LEEDS RHINOS USE CANNABIS LIGHTS TO GROW GRASS Posted on January 30, 2015 by laurencjourno Leeds Rhinos the Rugby league club located Headingley have been given a number of lights previously used to grow cannabis in a near by house. West Yorkshire police confiscated the lights from a Cannabis farm in North West Leeds on Tuesday but donated them to the club to help save money. PC Kevin Hussay, inner north west team, noticed that each time the police uncover a large scale cannabis farm they have to then pay for skips to
  • 5. dispose the electrical equipment and soil. Recently officers from North West Neighbourhood policing team have arranged to pass on equipment to others for legitimate use. PC Hussay looked into whether or the local community could put them to good use. Leeds Rhinos currently use special lighting to grow grass on worn areas of the pitch. The stadium which is home ground for the Rhinos team and Yorkshire carnegie matches is also used for university and school matches, so the grass is constantly getting damaged, donating the lights to them was the best option as they would get a substantial amount of use out of them. He said: “We already have an excellent relationship with Leeds Rhinos and they have worked with us on a number of community initiatives with schools and young people over the years. “When I found that we could donate equipment seized from cannabis farms to local groups I discussed it with their head groundsman to see how we might be able to help them out.” The police received a tip off about the house growing Cannabis, after they forced their way into the house the found the whole house fitted out with sophisticated lighting systems growing over 500 plants. One Veitnmease man was arrested at the scene with suspicion he was involved, he was charged to appear in court. The club collected around 50 lights ready to use on their pitch in the next coming weeks. Head Groundsman Ryan Golding commented, “We have a great relationship with the Police, especially through the work of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation and this just further grows those links. The lights will certainly be put to good use especially at this time of year.” The unused soil and pots removed from the house have been donated to Brudenell primary school by the police for its community garden. 7. LS6 RESIDENTS FURIOUS AT THE LOSS OF VICTORIA ROAD PLAYING FIELDS Posted on February 12, 2015 by laurencjourno Labour councillors recently voted in favour for allowing developers to build houses and an unwanted supermarket on the playing fields off Victoria Road, Headingley. Many of the local residents and campaigners for the area protested against this development happening however lost the battle when Leeds City Council gave permission. The grounds, formally owned by Leeds Girls High School now owned by the Grammar School at Leeds are home to sports playing fields and a swimming pool. Two things that are severely lacking in the area for the use of the community. Local resident and campaigner, Penny Goodman said:”what’s happened here seems incredibly short-sighted and thoughtless to me. The area around the site is badly short of green space and sporting facilities, both for public use and for local schools. All the available research shows very clearly that physical exercise and green space are essential to improving health,
  • 6. extending life-spans, and increasing people’s life chances. The Victoria Road site already ‘had’ playing fields, a sports hall and a swimming pool – but rather than let the local community get the benefit of these, the council has allowed the Grammar School at Leeds to sell them off to be built on instead.” A Labour party leaflet given to residents in April last year said that Labour councillors and Labour’s Parliamentary candidate were actually fighting to save the sports facilities on Victoria Road, however Labour have now voted to allow the housing and supermarket development on the field. Headingley Councillor Martin Hamilton said, “This part of Leeds is one of the most densely populated and has the least amount of green space for its residents not to mention the health problems which the retention and development of sports facilities could alleviate.” The loss of the sports facilities has contributed to the school crisis in the area. Schools are crying out for facilities just like those that have been knocked down, however the redevelopment on the land has already started despite the cry for help. Gred Hulholland MP spoke in a recent news letter about the situation, stating the last thing Headingley needs is more housing and another supermarket when there are many empty houses. The loss of the precious LS6 green space is still causing upset and anger in the area. 8. GREAT SUCCESS FOR YORKSHIRE’S FIRST CEREAL HOUSE Posted on February 27, 2015 by laurencjourno After realising there was a gap in the market Leeds Becket University graduates Jen Gibb and Zoe Blogg, 23 decided to take a leap and open what has become the second cereal house in the UK Moo’d cereal house located at 59 Otley Road in student heartland Headingley offers more than 100 different flavours of cereal and 6 types of milk as well as a unique idea of cereal ‘cocktails’. The business owners want their ‘cereal house’ to have a bar theme combining the ale pump of milk and the breakfast cocktails appealing to the students in the area, making sure the house isn’t just a novelty you visit once. Best friends Jen and Zoe started planning their business venture before they graduated last may but have now finally opened the doors to the students of Headingley. Jen said: “We used to go out for breakfast all the time but we’d always enjoy cereal more than stodgy other places. When we were hungover we didn’t always want rubbish food. Then we just thought why don’t we open our own cereal place, we want cereal we can’t find it anywhere. We saw a gap in the market and there was no where around that did that.” After having such a successful opening they have now decided they want to explore more ideas for their business. Many customers have requested take out after visiting the shop, after receiving so many requests Jen said this is their next step to make the business more successful.
  • 8. Jen Said: “We get a lot of people who want take away menus, I think the businesses around here like it for their lunch. So that shows we are getting a great response,we are going to do take out and also introduce cereal cakes and porridge.” There are also thoughts on opening a second shop as the first has been such a success. After sourcing all their things locally they have decided to keep the shop as local as possible from the ingredients down to the sideboards. Over the next few months guest cereals form a different part of the world will be introduced for a new flavor every time people visit. The back are of the shop is also being turned into a gallery for people to come a display their work free of charge. This is a great opportunity for the students in the area to get their work seen. Moo’d is open from 8am, serving bowls from just £2. https://www.facebook.com/MoodCerealHouse or follow @MoodCerealHouse. 10. HEADINGLEY CRICKET GROUND GETS NEW FLOODLIGHTS WITH SPECIAL YORKSHIRE DESIGN Posted on March 2, 2015 by laurencjourno Headingley Cricket ground, the home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club getting ready to erect new floodlights with very special Yorkshire design. The 56 meter floodlights will be situated at each of the four corners of the grounds enabling the club to hold regular matches at night in time for the new season starting. The unique design of the floodlights head frame is being made by lighting company Abacus Limited, each head frame will be shaped like the Yorkshire White Rose, a synonymous which is known across the country. David Ryder, operations director at Yorkshire, said: “This design process started back in March 2014, when the idea was first established. We didn’t think such an intricate and uniquely-shaped head frame would be possible, but (lighting company) Abacus just looked at the challenge and took it on. “The sight of these four white roses standing proud above the ground as a permanent light to shine on Headingley will be really symbolic.” Four trenches have now been dug out around the concourse of the grounds, each measuring around 15ft by 10ft with a massive 80 tonnes of concrete put in place to stabilise the lights in all weather conditions. The overall cost of the floodlight installation is estimated at £1.8 million, with a £700,000 grant coming from England and Wales Cricket Board. Howard Ferguson, Operations Manager at YCCC said: “We’re hoping the head frames will be known throughout the world as Headingly’s floodlights, they’re not just the standard square or round ones. We were told they are going to be the brightest in the country, until someone else gets some better ones. The process started in early January 2015, but the first shaft is due to be installed later this week. The instalments of the new floodlight is only the first step in the multi million pound development planned for the club. Yorkshire CCC wants to transform Headingley Cricket Ground into one of the finest cricket venues in the world. The proposed redevelopment ideas of the ground over the next 20 years,
  • 9. includes the installation of floodlights and the rebuilding of the North/South Stand, adjoining the rugby ground. The capacity of the cricket ground will increase from 17,000 to 20,000 in the redevelopment. The shared rugby and cricket stand is going to be redeveloped, the stadium needs a new stand and they’re hoping to get it in time for the 2019 season as it’s set to be a big season for the YCCC.
