CPR/AED/First Aid Training Policy
The PIAA does not mandate high school coaches to be CPR/AED certified, however this will change over the
years to come. In case of emergency, there are two AED units currently in the building. The locations are in the
main gymnasium, and alongside the athletic trainer. In case of emergency, look to find an athletic trainer or
anyone who is certified in CPR/AED/ first aid. This licensure is mandatory to renew every two years.
Protective Equipment Policy
The purchasing of protective equipment should not be based on the look of the equipment, but the ability to
prevent injury. The equipment manager is in charge of equipment modifications, adjustments, and inventory.
Equipment is checked frequently for damage, especially football helmets. The air bladders are checked before
practices and games, making sure that they are filled to the correct volume. In order to avoid liability issues the
athletic trainer is required to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using and maintaining protective
equipment. Equipment is only to be used for the purpose it is designed. Athletes are warned about all possible
risks that the equipment could entail.
Reconditioning Equipment:
Clarion Area High School is required to purchase helmets only approved by NOCSAE. Helmets are designated
a code number, and the date of purchase is recorded. Helmets are cleaned and fitted according to manufacturer’s
recommendations on a regular schedule during the season and at the end of the season prior to off-season
storage, in order to avoid infections. Recertification and reconditioning should be done every two years using a
certified NOCSAE- approved vendor if no warranty exists, or after the warranty expires. Damaged or broken
helmets are to be repaired or replaced before returning to service.
8
Lightning Safety Policy
* If thunder or lightning may be heard or seen, immediately stop activity and seek protective shelter. If
shelter is not available, an automobile is a safe alternative. If none of these options are available, seek shelter
under a small tree in a wooded area that is not on a hill. As a last resort, seek refuge in a ravine or valley. In all
instances outdoors, assume the aforementioned crouched (“fetal”) position.
* The 30 minute rule- It is required to wait a minimum of 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning is
witnessed. Any subsequent lightning or thunder after the beginning of the 30 minute count should reset the
clock and another 30 minute count should begin.
* In situations which thunder or lightning may be present and you feel hair stand on end and tingle, immediately
assume a crouched position- drop to knees and place arms on legs and lower your head. DO NOT LIE FLAT!
* The flash-to-bang method provides an estimate distance as to how close the lightning strike is occurring.
From the time the lightning is spotted: count the number of seconds until the bang occurs, and divide by 5 to
calculate the number of miles away a lightning bolt strikes.
9
Heat Index Policy
Athletic trainers must use common sense when
overseeing the health care of athletes participating
in the heat. The combination of heat, humidity, and
bright sunshine can be very taxing on young
athletes, and these conditions warrant extra caution.
If at any point the heat index reaches or exceeds the
105 degrees mark, stop all play and move the
athletes indoors or somewhere cool. If any athlete
presents any signs or symptoms of heat illness seek
emergency medical personnel and keep the athlete
conscious, alert, and oriented.
The universal wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) index:
This index provides the athletic trainer with an objective means for determining necessary precautions for
practice and competition in hot weather. Directions on how to calculate this are listed below:
1. Measure the dry bulb temperature (DBT), wet bulb thermometer (WBT), and the globe temperature
(GT).
2. Use the Formula: 0.1 × DBT + 0.7 × WBT + GT × 0.2
3. Use the chart above to assess the stresses placed on the young athletes and what the proper actions are to
prevent heat illnesses.
10
Recommendations for Improvements
*The Athletic Training room in its current size and condition is not suitable for the amount of athletes that need
to be treated on a daily basis. A more functional area for rehabilitation (i.e. foam rolling, stretching, and other
rehabilitative activities) is necessary for better monitoring of the athletes.
* A treatment log for medications would help the athletic training staff and the athlete as to when, what type,
and dosage of medication were taken for documentation purposes.
*A locked cabinet or safe for both expensive modalities and medications would be beneficial to combat theft of
such items. These modalities are very expensive, delicate and could easily be damaged if not used or handled
correctly. Medications, if not administered or taken correctly, can seriously harm the athletes and presents a
possibility of liability issues.
*A newer, larger ice machine is crucial to improve the daily operations in the ATR. Due to the amount of sports
teams covered who all require gallons of ice water and coolers of injury ice, an ice machine that produces a
larger quantity of ice would be a benefit.
* A leaky ceiling in the athletic training room is potentially hazardous. The modalities in the athletic training
room could be defective if wet, and electrical damage or mold production may be present.
* The auxiliary gym does not have an AED or a Fire Extinguisher. With the proper location of safety
equipment, liability issues may be further avoided.
