Professional Development (Year One):
Within Career and Internship Services, interacting in one-on-one appointments requires high levels of
the following two student affairs competencies identified by NASPA and ACPA:
3. STROMMEN GRADUATE INTERN, ORIENTATION 3
• Advising & Helping
• Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion
The new Graduate Intern will be provided with professional development and reflection opportunities in
order to foster these competencies. First, to strengthen his or her advising and helping skills, the Graduate Intern
will be trained by career coaches on appropriate counseling techniques, such as active listening, paraphrasing,
providing needs assessments, and goal setting. He or she will then observe various career coaching
appointments, and engage in reflective discussion surrounding the observation. Once comfortable, the Graduate
Intern will then be observed by his or her supervisor with appropriate time for feedback and discussion. Finally,
additional reading materials from the field will be provided to supplement discussions.
Growing in multicultural competence by gaining an understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion, is
another poignant competency required in the functional area of career services. Thus, the Graduate Intern will
be required to reflect on his or her own identities through reading and discussions from Multicultural
Competence in Student Affairs (Pope, Reynolds, & Mueller, 2004), participation in ACTC Professional
Development Day, and attending Ally Trainings for the GLBT community.
Appraisal Process:
The appraisal process for the Graduate Intern in Career and Internship services will consist of three
measureable performance indicators which will be discussed in a mid-year and year-end participatory
evaluation:
• Observe and receive observation feedback on at least five career coaching appointments each
semester
• Participate in at least two professional development opportunities to develop multicultural
competence
• Complete at least two informational interviews with student affairs professionals each semester
