7. What exactly is an
“endowment fund”?
So.. Community
Foundations build
“endowment funds” to
support charities…
8. An endowment fund is a fund that is pooled
together in an account, much like your bank
account.
The money originally put into the account, which is
called the ‘capital’, is left untouched. As the money
sits in the account it generates interest and the
money grows! It is only the accumulated interest
that is given to charities each year, twice a year.
Therefore the capital is left in the account to
provide for local charities, FOREVER!

11. What has YIP done for our Community?
● Last year, YIP students handed out grants to seven local charities for a total
of $4,000
● YIP students get out into the community, tours various charities and get the
opportunity to use their own ideas to make a difference in Kenora and the
surrounding region
● In May 2017, St. Thomas Aquinas students handed out grants to: Alzheimer
Society of Kenora/Rainy River Districts, the Kenora Sexual Assault Centre,
Opening Our Doors, and Vilij Well in Sioux Narrows
● Beaver Brae gave their cheques to: Kenora Fellowship Centre, Rotary Splash
Park, and Transition Initiative Kenora
12. YIP Endowment Fund?
● There is currently over $12,300 in the YIP Endowment Funds
for both Beaver Brae and Thomas Aquinas
● Various donors have also been contributing to the YIP
endowment funds for both schools
13. Granting Ceremony
● At the end of the year, students are invited to the May Granting
Ceremony, where the cheques are presented by the students to the
charities of the students’ choice
● An opportunity to recognize the students for their good work within
the community
● In 2017, guests attended the ceremony including the City of Kenora
Councilors, parents, teachers and members of the public
