MEANING OF CULTURE
Relating to the ideas , customs and social behaviour of a society which relating to the arts and to
intellectual achievements.
DEFINATION OF CULTURE
The integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the
capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations.
MEANING OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
Cultural heritage is the legacy of physical science artifacts and intangible attributes of a group
or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for
the benefit of future generations.
MAHATMA GANDHI ON CULTURAL
HERITAGE OF INDIA
It stands for synthesis of the different cultures that
have come to stay in India, that have influenced
Indian life, and that, in their turn, have themselves
been influence by the spirit of the soil. This
synthesis will naturally be of the spirit of the soil.
This synthesis will naturally be of the Swadeshi
type, where each culture is assured its legitimate
place, and not of the American pattern, where one
dominant culture absorbs the rest, and where one
dominant culture absorbs the rest, and where the
aim is not towards harmony, but towards an
artificial and forced unity.
INDIAN CULTURE
The culture of India refers collectively to the thousands of distinct and unique cultures of all religions and
communities present in India. India's languages, religions, dances, music, architecture, foods, and
customs differs from place to place within the country.

RELIGIONS AND SPIRITUALITY
• India is a birth place of Hinduism, Buddhism,
Jainism and Sikhism, collectively known as Indian
Religions.
• India is one of the most religiously diverse nations.
• Family, marriages, respects, namaste are plays a
significant role in the Indian culture. India has had a
prevailing tradition of joint Hindu family system
LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
• There are 415 living languages.
• Two official languages of
communication -Hindi and English.
• Other languages include- Gujarati,
Marathi, , Tamil, Telgu, Urdu,
Sanskrit, Punjabi and many more.
FOOD
Indian cuisine is diversified in its
varieties similar to its cultures,
races and regions.
• Meat dishes are more common in
North India while more vegetables
are eaten in the South.
• kababs, kurmas, koftas,
biriyanis, rogan josh, tandoori
chicken, tandoori rotis etc are
contribution of Muslims.
• Rice is the staple food of the
South while in the North it is
supplemented or substituted by
pooris, chappathis or nan.
Dhal(lentil soup) and Dhai (curd)
are common throughout India.
• As India has a very long coastal
area, dishes prepared with fish are
also popular.

•Traditional clothing in India greatly varies
across different parts of the country and is
influenced by local culture, geography,
climate and rural/urban settings.
• Popular styles of dress include draped
garments such as sari for women
and dhoti or lungi or panche (in Kannada)
,paiyamas, kurtas for men.
• Others traditional dress for women are
choli, salwar, kameez,ghagra etc.
MUSIC AND DANCE
• Indian dance too has diverse folk
classical forms. Among the well
known folk dances are the
bhangra of Punjab, Bihu of Assam,
the chhau of Jharkhand, Odisi of
Orissa , ghoomar of Rajasthan,
dandiya and garba of Gujarat and
Lavani of Maharashtra , kathak
dance of north India,
bharatnatyam, mohininatyam
,kuchipuri ,kathakali are all from
south India. Manipuri ,odisi dance
are from eastern India.
• Folk songs are simple traditional
music forms. In classical music
which follows ragas, talas and
shrutis.
