Focal Group Discussion (Female)
Objective:-
How this reconstructed earthen roads benefits women economically and socially. And how
this reconstructed earthen roads makes difference in their livelihood activities.
Discussion:-
 How this reconstructed earthen roads differs socially from previous construction and
how it is benefiting the women economically and socially….
Following this questions they said before the roads were not able to walk and drive and not
even good for heavy vehicles and there was no proper way to go to some place and also a lot of
different occasions and functions as we had to attend and because of the roads there was so
much blockages on the way. And Our Home-based Business was stopped by this hurdle and
daily routeen activities stopped because of the rough and blocked road. And this reconstruction
creates big change in our routeen and our walk and drive is now possible. This reconstruction
makes access to go any place and it makes our business restart.
 How it facilitate in the betterment of livelihood, health facilities and how it has
increased their accessibility to…local Markets, Schools, Hospitals…
For women these roads become a chance to have their own home based business successfully,
mostly these women do embroidery and make Quilts and make bread plates as they needed for
it the raw material also, for this they walk and drive to market now any time of the day and
night and sometimes they travel alone easily on this road. For their children these roads are
clean and smooth, their children uniforms remain clean because of no dirt and no holes on the
roads now and no thorns. Now they can easily walk to school and this way make them regular
as well, according to the school teachers and head master this road create change but not
enough change to mention, their school attendance before this 70% to 80% and now it just
increase 10%.They like to go to school now and they want this road remain and undamaged and
they also take interest to protect and clean and maintain this road and help each other and
RMTs to save it from damage.
 Are these earthen roads helping you in your neighborhood and community activities
and for mobility during emergency and linkages to the market…
Before flood and after flood these roads were not even in this condition to walk even and after
this reconstruction these roads able to walk and we can drive vehicles on it also. Before this our
mobility just by foot or carts and we can drive motor cycle, car, tractor, and van also. In

emergency situations we have to wait for days to move to hospitals and dispensaries and now
we can call ambulance and hire a car on the door step. Before they charge much rent foe
emergency vehicle but now because of the roads they charge less. Sometimes we have to take
patient on shoulders and sometimes tie them in a clothe to reach hospital as soon as possible
and this reconstruction make big difference in our emergency situations. It linked to main road
and we can go to market easily now and even we hire auto and on the way back it dropped at
our home before they not even allow us to travel on that because they had to drive on that
rough roads and they easily drive on this road.
 Were women involved during selection and what was the level of participation of them
and what will be the role of sustainability reconstruction of earthen roads…
Meetings held by Awaz cds in different villages and where they selected women for RMTs and
also invited all women from the area to inform and had discussion with them, all women was
part of selection process and they participate with their full concern , some selected and some
not but they promise to play a role to envisage this effort and if again these roads damaged
fully or partially they do not wait for help and do not cal any one they maintain it by themselves
and also motivate community and their husbands and the farmers of that related land to
rebuild and maintain the damages of the roads.
 Does this project help in mitigating any disaster like flood, heavy rain…
For this question they are not positive because of the last flood , its level in this area was 8 to
10 feet high and again this level of water hit this area than these roads cannot remain
undamaged these will completely damage.
Conclusion:-
These reconstructions of earthen roads create change and possibility for easy transportation
but it is temporary and cannot helpful in disaster like 2010 flood.
