1. Questionnaire analysis
To find out more about more about my target audience, I handed out 20 questions to
young girls aged 10-14. I included both open and closed questions, allowing myself
to get a range of answers, with some in detail, and some less detailed. ‘Easy’
language was used to ensure that the young audience fully understand my
questions, making my questionnaire more reliable and enjoyable for them to fill out.
10 questions were asked, making the questionnaire fairly short to fill out, so people
would be willing to participate. An opportunity sample was used, meaning the
questionnaire was given out to whoever was available at the time.
The first question I asked on my questionnaire is ‘what are your hobbies and
interests?’; it was an open-ended question so the participants could answer
whatever they want, and could give as many different things as they want. The graph
below shows the answers that were given when I received the results of my
questionnaire. 13 different answers were given; dance, sport, horse-riding, drawing,
shopping, acting, singing, photography, listening to music, reading, swimming,
meeting friends, and watching movies. Dancing and watching movies each got 4
votes, and therefore these were most popular within my target audience. Drawing,
reading, and listening to music each got 3 votes, making these three options the
second most popular. Shopping, singing, photography, swimming and meeting
friends each got 2 votes, and sports, horse-riding, and acting each got 1 vote,
making them less popular within my target audience. This question helped me to get
to know my target audience more, and understand what content should be put in my
magazine to make it appeal to young girls more. However, only 20 people in the
same area were asked, making it unrepresentative of young girls all over the
country.

2. weekly never yearly monthly
The second question participants were
asked is ‘how often do you read pop
magazines? Please tick only one
option’. This question was closed, and
participants had to choose between ‘every
week’, ‘every month’, ‘every year’, and
‘never’. As shown in the graph below, 4
people answered ‘weekly’, 1 person
answered ‘yearly’ and 5 people answered
‘never’. Half of the participants answered
‘monthly’, making it the most popular
answer. Although ¼ of the people I asked
answered ‘never’, I aim to make my music
magazine one that people would buy.
The third question I asked is ‘Who are your favourite three pop artists?’; I asked this
so I could find out which artists my target audience would be most interested in
reading about in a magazine within the pop genre. This was an open ended question
so people could say whatever artist they liked; however, some people wrote artists
that are not in the genre of pop (these artists will not be included in the graph below),
and others wrote less than three names.

Taylor Swift Justin Bieber One Direction Ariana Grande Ed Sheeran 5SOS The Vamps
As shown by the graph above, One Direction was the most popular, followed by
Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. 5SOS, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran and the Vamps
also got more than one vote. Katy Perry, The Wanted, Lady Gaga, Jessie J, The
3. Script, Ellie Goulding and The Saturdays each got 1 vote, but because of the small
number, I decided not to include them in the table.
The fourth question on my questionnaire was a closed question that asked ‘What
content would you like to be included in a new pop magazine? Please tick two.’ and
the choices ‘fashion articles’, ‘advice section’, ‘boy info’, and ‘celebrity interviews and
news’ were given. I asked this question because it will help me understand what my
target audience would like to read in a pop magazine so I know what to include in
mine. The results of this question are shown below; Fashion articles and Celebrity
interviews and news both received 13 votes, making them the most popular
answers. Boy info got voted for 10 times, and advice section 4 times.

The fifth question I asked was ‘What pop artist would you like to see on the front of a
pop magazine?’ I asked this because it would help me when deciding who should be
on the front of my magazine; a band, a single artist etc. This question was closed so
any artist could be chosen, and participants were allowed to put any number of
artists. 7 people said they would like to see Taylor Swift on the front cover, 4 people
said Ariana Grande, and 1 person said Katy Perry, making the total number for a girl
artist 12, compared to 6 for a boy artist; Justin Bieber got 4 votes and Ed Sheeran
got 2. Boy bands then got 8 votes; 5SOS were voted for 3 times, and 1 direction 5
times. Nobody voted for any girl bands, as shown in the graph below.

The sixth question I put on my questionnaire is ‘What do you think would be a
reasonable price for a pop magazine?’ This was a closed question, and people were
asked to tick a box, they were given the choices ‘£0-1’, ‘£2-3’, and ‘£3+’. As shown in
the graph below, 3 people chose £0-1, and 17 people chose £2-3, meaning nobody
ticked £3+. I think this was successful because my magazine would be priced
between £2-3 pound, and the majority of people ticked this option.

5. The seventh question that was included in my Questionnaire was a closed question
which asked ‘Freebies are often given away in pop magazines, what would you like
to receive if you were buying the magazine? Please tick one option. Space has
been left for you to suggest other things that have not been listed’. The choices
that were given are ‘make up sets’, ‘stationary’, ‘Jewellery’ and ‘other please state
what you would suggest below’. I asked this question because it would help me to
know which freebie should be included with my magazine, if I decide to include any.
Only one person ticked the ‘other’ box, but they didn’t state what other gift they
would like. Makeup was the most popular option as it received 9 votes. Jewellery
and stationary got 5 votes each. This question has helped me with my research
because I now know what people would like to receive most. The graph below shows
these results, excluding the option ‘other’ as the participant didn’t state anything.

The eighth question on my questionnaire was ‘how often do you attend pop
concerts?’, and this question would help me to know what sort of information should
be included in my magazine about concerts. The target audience for pop is young,
meaning there is less of a chance that people would go to concerts. This was also a
closed question and people were given the options ‘Never’, ‘1-2 times a year’, 3+ a
year’. ½ of the people I gave this questionnaire to answered ‘never’, 9 people
answered ‘1-2 times a year’ and 1 person answered ‘3+ times a year’. The results
from this question help me to decide whether or not I should put information about
tours in the magazine.

Question 9 of my questionnaire asked ‘What colours would attract you most to
buying a magazine? Name two’. This was an open ended question so people can
answer anything. Pink was the most common answer which got 15 votes. This is
followed by blue which got 9, and red which got 6. 5 people voted purple and 2
people voted orange, while yellow, white and green each got 1 vote. This question
helped me to decide what colours should be on my front cover. However, although
blue got the second most common number of votes, I plan to stick to conventions of
pop magazines, and use more feminine colours.

7. The final question on my questionnaire was ‘would you say that music features
heavily in our life? Please explain how’. This question was ignored by 3 of the
participants, meaning the results for this are less representative as they could have
been. 16 people said yes, and 1 person said no; the reasons given ranged from ‘I
listen to it when travelling’, ‘it takes my bad feelings away’, ‘it reflects my mood and
gives me motivation’, and ‘I like dancing and singing to it’.
