1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
Costs to do with production could include the equipment you make it on as well as things like software on the
computer, also things like the paper costs and the printing costs depending on how many books you want
printed.
Available resources:
The resources I have include a Mac computer, Photoshop cc with a graphics tablets as well as a scanner, a
camera and artistic supplies like pencils and paper as well as online source images to work from.

2. Quantity:
I want to make my book available to as many people as possible so I would maybe print a high number of
copies such as 1000. This way I will have enough books to distribute to stores. I also this that if the book is
more common and easily found the cost might go down meaning more people could potentially buy the book.
If I made say 100 the book would be quite rare and have to be sold at quite a high price to see profit return.
Audience and Target Market:
The age gap I am aiming for with the audience of my book are about 1-7 years old, I think this is a good age
as younger children can have the book read to them and but also children that are a little bit older could read it
themselves, I feel as though a child who is maybe a bit older than that would not get the same enjoyment out
of the book as someone below 7 would. My book is for both girls and boys, I have both female and male
characters that appeal to both genders and my book is in no way gender specific. When it come to class as
well anyone can read the book and enjoy it regardless of how well of the child is as it’s a children’s book and
is relatively cheap and there for available to people from all classes.
Quality Factors:
To make my book the best it can possibly be I will print it on thick card so it is not easily damages and can
stay in good condition for a good amount of time. Also I will go back and make sure my book has a running
style and theme and it appears to be professional and well put together rather than just a collection of images.
Also I will export my images, as high quality as I can to make sure the images are sharp as can be. I will use
all the time I have to my advantage and try and complete tasks fast but with well thought out planning.
Codes of Practice:
The publishers code of practice is mainly to do with the cooperation of the publishers and the author having
fair business when it comes to the book, the publishers should keep the author up to date with news of things
like sales, complaints, and the general progress of their business together. They also need to understand the
ethical and moral rights of the author and they cannot terminate the contract without proper legal reason. The
contract must also be specific when it comes to plans for publishing and distribution with predictions and
timetables etc.

3. Regulation:
The Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC states that toys must reach specific safety tests and inspections usually
done by EC. This is to prove they are not harmful to the people they are being sold to, they must have the
appropriate warnings depending on if they have small parts and other hazardous things. They toys are
manufactures to reduce the risk od injury as much as possible including not having things like cords or wires.
They also need to make sure the toy has no harmful chemicals in it and it’s not easily broken. This has to be
in a signed contract and honoured by the toy company.
Copyright:
Make sure the story I’m using has the appropriate legal rights to be out there even if its changed, older books
sometimes run out of copyright. I have to make sure that the text I write cannot be copied legally by any
anyone, also the pages themselves cant be copied as well as the characters from the book and the title etc.
as far as design goes I should copyright my designs. These all need to be protected to make sure no one else
and duplicate it legally and we actually own the whole book.
Ethical Issues:
I made sure there was nothing remotely discriminatory with my book and it appealed to all races age’s
genders and cultures without offending anyone or having anything in it that is not politically correct. I made the
characters in my book animals to help insure the character would be less relatable but still easy for children to
like. I made sure the representations of Africa in my book are well thought out and respectfully accurate and to
not discriminate or call out anything negative in any way.

4. Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

5. Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
Character design experimentation
Background design experimentation.
Session 2:
Design and produce 1-2 backgrounds.

6. Session 3:
Design and produce 1-2 backgrounds
Session 4:
Finish of designing backgrounds and finalise, ass details.

7. Produce Woody and Wendy.
Session 5:
Produce Ellie, Larry and Gary.
Session 6:
Produce Jerry and his Bird servants.

8. Session 7:
Finalise character designs. Add the little details.
Start to produce character on background layout. Add the right character to the right pages in the right
positions.
Session 8:
Start to design text, font and layout of text. Finalise text design layout.

9. Session 9:
Combine all the finished assets and layout the book as a whole. Add page numbers and make sure the
book has a theme and it goes together.
Session 10:
Finalise Book.

11. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Tripping up over chairs, tables and bags.
Make sure chairs are under tables and out of the way also
make sure all bags are under tables and out of the way.
Straining to see screen and use computer.
Follow the display screen equipment regulations and take
regular breaks.
Body injury from sitting wrong.
Make sure the chair is fully adjustable and does not
cause pain.

12. Electrocution or injury from liquids.
Make sure liquids are kept away from computer but keep
hydrated and leave the room top drink.
