1. Counseling Intern June
2012- May 2013
As a counseling intern at Depelchin Children’s Center, I saw clients in a variety of settings, including
the University of Texas Pediatric Infectious Disease Clinic, the Salvation Army Family Residence, and
the Depelchin Memorial location.
University of Texas Health Science Center- Pediatric Infectious Disease Clinic
I counseled and provided medical individual and family therapy for HIV positive
youth and young adults, as well as their families. The individuals presented with a
variety of issues including depression, anxiety, sexual and physical abuse, and
parenting issues. I assisted clients in addressing these concerns, as well as concerns
such as dealing with their diagnosis, relationships difficulties, and home
management. In addition, I have been trained and supervised in Trauma-Focused
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which I implemented in supporting my clients in
addressing various forms of trauma. I provided assessment, diagnosis, treatment
planning, intervention, and discharge planning services. I participated in a
multidisciplinary team of 11 health care professionals to establish common goals
and establish a course of treatment for patients.
Salvation Army Family Residence
I have enjoyed working with both individuals and families from diverse cultural
backgrounds at the Salvation Army Family Residence, and have been given the
opportunity to assist my clients in addressing a variety of presenting problems,
including (but not limited to) major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety,
self-care difficulties, stresses associated with living in the shelter, parenting
difficulties, and trauma. In addition, I have co-facilitated a weekly teen group
consisting of 10 teens living in the shelter, as well as activity groups for children
ages 4 and 5. In Teen Group, I assisted the group to become more productive
through innovative ideas and methods, progression of group process, encouraging
positive interactions between group members and shaping group dynamics. With
individuals and families, I utilized techniques such as Motivational Interviewing,
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Artistic expression, and Psychoanalytic Therapy.
Depelchin Children’s Center
My work at Depelchin has involved training, practice, and supervision in Trauma-
Focused CBT. In addition, I have facilitated both anger management as well as social
skills training groups for children (ages 10- 13) at the Depelchin Memorial location.
I encouraged individuals and family members to develop and use skills and
strategies for confronting their problems in a constructive manner. In addition, I
developed and implemented individualized treatment plans; addressing family
relationship problems, destructive patterns of behavior, and various other issues.
