The Role of Social Media in Internet
Marketing
There is little doubt that social media sites
such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Google
Plus and the like have had an enormous
impact with online business. With hundreds of
millions of people already part of the social
media scene and millions more joining every
day, online businesses both large and small
are trying to tap into this market.
However, social media is not like
a normal customer base that you
can advertise to and expect
people to buy products
immediately. All the major social
media websites have their own
set of standards, plus many
people like to talk to each other in
these gatherings and not have to
deal with direct advertising.
What is Social Media Marketing?
Otherwise known as SMM, this form of internet
marketing uses the power of social media outlets
to communicate with customers through a series
of posts, videos, images and more. Unlike the old
fashioned advertising of brick and mortar
businesses that used radio, TV and newspaper
ads, and social media marketing is more casual
in nature and targeted towards building lines of
communication rather than hard selling.
How to Use Social Media Marketing for Your
Online Business
There are a number of simple, yet powerful
strategies that can bring about long term results
when tapping into the social media websites.
Here are just a few things to keep in mind.
Set the Goals
You can't get there unless you know where you
are heading. Before you begin, you need to
write down the goals that you want to achieve
through social media marketing. If you are not
very familiar with sites such as Facebook,
Twitter and the like, then sign up personally for
the accounts and get familiar with how it all
works. After a short period of time, you'll
understand this unique world and how you can
set achievable goals.
Plan the Messaging
Nothing you do on social media sites should be
without some sort of overarching plan that has
an end result. You should approach your first
communications with your social media sites
that you have subscribed as the means of
reaching out to potential customers.
Focus on Content
Your messages should contain good, usable
information. Even if you are just announcing a
birthday or the like, the content should be
fresh, interesting and geared towards your
customers. For the most part, when you
announce new products you should be simple
and direct.
However, most of your posts will be about
the news of your industry such as new ways
to use the products you sell, what is
predicted for the future and the like.
Keep Learning
The world of social media changes on a
daily basis, so you should keep up with the
latest offerings and advances to see if they
work well with your plan. Remember that
just because something is new doesn’t
mean its right for your business. The more
you understand how social media works, the
better you’ll be able to judge whether it is
right for you.
