Nursing Burnout- How To Rekindle The Flame
Burnout is a condition in which nurses
suffer from emotional exhaustion,
experience a lack of personal
accomplishment, and tend to
depersonalize others.

Series1
Mealer, Jones, Newman, Mcfann, Rothbaum, & Moss, M. (2012) Examined the prevalence
of nursing burnout in ICU nurses across the nation. The results are shown above.
Try these Mindfulness based practices to help
refocus and relax.
Mindful Breathing
Mindful Looking
To help prevent burnout in your nursing carrier try
to implement some of the following into your routine
 Take a 5 minute walk outside twice a shift
 Chart throughout your shift to prevent
charting off the clock.
 Engage in self care activities outside of work
like getting a massage or watching a fun
movie.
 Prepare all your meals and snacks the night
before. If you are always rushed in the
morning try making a pitcher of iced coffee
for the week.
 Remind yourself of why you chose to
become a nurse
 Learn to say NO to working over time
 Ask for help, if you think your assignment is
too busy talk to your charge nurse or call a
buffer or resource nurse for assistance
1. Plan weekend long retreats for hospital
staff and nurses. Retreats help promote
relaxation and team building among
nurses.
2. Seek out emotional support and healthy
coping skills to help prevent or correct
burnout.
3. Engage in self-care activities to promote
relaxation and positive feelings.
4. Encourage your organization to provide
nurses and staff with therapy programs
and counseling services.
5. Plan a class on mindfulness training that
staff can easily attends.
6. Managers can recognize and reward
nurses. Nurse of the month gets one
guaranteed A day.
7. Managers can encourage their staff to
educate themselves on nursing burnout.
Nurses can even earn CEU’s for taking
this online course. “Burnout Coping with
Job Related Stress in Healthcare” from
online nursing continuing education.References
Nursing burnout has been associated with an
increase in hospital acquired urinary tract
infections and surgical site infections Cimiatti,
Aiken, Sloane, Wu (2012).
The Four Stages Of Nursing Burnout
1. Physical and emotional exhaustion
2. Shame and doubt
3. Cynicism and callousness
4. Failure, helplessness and collapse
Could you be experiencing nursing burnout?
See how many of the symptoms you relate with
below. Than see the “What Can You Do” section
to find tips on managing burnout.
Physical exhaustion- feeling tired and drained
all of the time, poor sleeping patterns, muscles
aches and increase in sickness and colds.
Emotional Exhaustion- loosing motivation,
feeling cynical, decreased satisfaction in
accomplishment, feeling detached, feeling
helpless and not finding the same excitement for
your job as you once did.
Behavioral- calling in sick, arriving to work late
or leaving early, procrastinating, withdrawing
from ones responsibilities and taking ones
frustration out on others.
Nursing burnout often caused but chronic stress.
Chronic stress in the work place can make the
body go into a constant fight or flight mode.
Research shows that long term activation of the
body’s stress response system can lead to:

Don’t Burnout.
 Sleep problems
 Anxiety
 Depression
 Weight gain
 Heart disease
 Digestive problems
Nursing burnout has been associated with working
over time. Working over time not only contributes
to fatigue but also decreases patient
satisfaction Stimpfe, Sloane & Aiken (2012)
Sit or stand in a quiet place. Feel your breath move
in and out of your body. Let all other worries and
stresses fall away. Pay attention to the way your
lungs expand with each breath. If your mind starts to
wonder simply redirect your attention back to your
breath. Try this for 2 minutes if your in a time crunch
or 15-20 minutes at home
Find a few small, familiar objects such as a pen light
or your stethoscope. Look at the objects with fresh
eyes. Identify one new detail about each object that
you didn't see before. As you become more aware of
your world, you might become fonder of the things
around you.
