1. Putting Together the Pieces
Thinking about the Scientific Method
Assembled for you by Kella Randolph

2. We gather clues
• Using the clues we have found, we try to make
sense of them. Sometimes we succeed and
sometimes we don’t.
• Science is the art of using what we know to make
sense of the world. Sometimes when we get new
information, we have to rethink our conclusions
and come up with a new idea.

5. It was six men of Indostan
To learning much inclined
Who went to see the Elephant
(Though all of them were blind),
That each by observation
Might satisfy his mind

8. Side or wall?
• The First approached
the Elephant,
And happening to fall
Against his broad and
sturdy side,
At once began to

"God bless me! but the

Is very like a wall!"

9. Tusk or spear?
• The Second, feeling of
the tusk,
Cried, "Ho! what have
we here
So very round and
smooth and sharp?
To me 'tis mighty clear
This wonder of an
Elephant
Is very like a spear!" https://images.app.goo.gl/1h7SExmdogwKGs8J7
10. Trunk or
snake?
The Third approached
the animal,
And happening to take
The squirming trunk
within his hands,
Thus boldly up and

"I see," quoth he, "the
Elephant
Is very like a snake."

11. Knee or
tree?
The Fourth reached

12. Ear or fan?
• The Fifth, who chanced
to touch the ear,
• Said: "E'en the blindest

• Is very like a fan!"

13. Tail or
rope?
The Sixth no sooner

Then seizing on the

That fell within his

Elephant
Is very like a rope."

14. Right or
wrong?
And so these men of
Indostan
Disputed loud and
long.
Each in his own
opinion
Exceeding stiff and
strong,
Though each was
partly in the right,
And all were in the
wrong.

“saw” it

17. Literature and the Scientific
Method
• 1. How does this poem illustrate the
importance of observation in the scientific
method?
18. 2. What is the moral of the tale?
• In other words, what message are we to take
from this story?
19. 3. Many scientific errors can occur because the
researcher does not use good skills of
observation.
20. Steps of the Scientific Method
• 1) Ask questions, make observations
2) Gather information
3) Form a hypothesis
4) Set up a controlled experiment
• Independent variable – the variable that is deliberately
changed
Dependent variable is variable that is observed
• 5) Record and analyze results
6) Draw a conclusion
7) Repeat
