2. Indeed which is arguably the most popular
site to find jobs on is where I will look for
most of the jobs for my research as it seems
to be one of the most reliable sites for those
looking for jobs. Indeed is an American site
however it is used worldwide these days. It
was launched in late 2004 with the intention
of letting people post job listings on it. It
then continued to grow into what it is now
which is a job listing website that is available
In over sixty countries as well as being
available in over twenty five languages. Its
very easy to use and the feature that lets
you limit how far you're searching for a job
is extremely helpful to those looking to stay
where they are or even possibly relocate.
They give you many different options that
help you limit your job search down to
something that is relevant to you and
whatever qualifications you have, the salary
you want to be getting, etc.
Although I feel like Indeed is the best
site to be looking on if I am looking at
potential jobs I will also look on
Glassdoor, not only so I can see job that
may not be advertised on Indeed but as
well as this it means that I have a chance
to look at the differences between
Indeed and Glassdoor to see why people
prefer Indeed over Glassdoor when
finding a job. Glassdoor is also an
American site that was launched in
2006, three years after Indeed was
launched. On Glassdoor you can
not only apply for jobs however you can
also leave reviews on companies. Unlike
Indeed, Glassdoor was sold to Recruit
Holdings for 1.2 billion dollars however
it continues to operate as an
independent subsidiary.
3. At the top of each of the job posts, it includes the title of the job that is being advertised as well as where the job is
located, a rating of the company itself and the wage you would be getting whilst working there. As well as that they
state that they are hybrid remote meaning that you would be working both from the office and from home.
In this next section the company
speak about what the job entails
for whoever will get it such as what
their responsibilities on the job
would be such as being able to edit
content, being able to know how to
use resources available to you etc.
As well as this they talk about what
they are looking for in the person
they are planning on hiring and in
this case, they are looking for
someone who is fluent in one of
the listed languages, they want
someone who is getting their
degree in a 'relevant subject' so
seeing as this is an editorial job this
could be a media and
communications degree, an English
Language/Literature degree. As
well as this they want someone
who is good at paying attention to
the details as well as someone
communicative seeing as the role
revolves around working
around/with others. They also
clearly state the applicant should
be organised in what they do as
well as being someone who is good
with time management as the job
will involve deadlines for projects.
They also mention the hours they
are looking to offer which is
between 10 and 20 depending on
your available hours.
When looking at job applications it's important to remember that you need to sell yourself however the company will
also be trying to sell themselves to you as they are looking for an employee, so they need to look appealing. In an
attempt to do this, the company have stated some of the benefits you would get if you were working with them such
as free breakfast, monthly prizes as well as being able to work both at the office and at home
After the section where the company has listed what they want from
a potential employee it is then their chance to try and sell themselves
to you as a company. They begin this by talking about how they
would make your first day as comfortable as possible by giving you a
goodie bag on your first day as work. It is clear that they are using
this as an incentive to make you want to work with them.
As well as the gift bag
incentive they also go on to
state that they will give you
the training you need for the
position as they want to help
you fit in with them as much
as you want to fit in with
them. They also state the
benefits they offer such as
holidays (you get your
birthday off each year) as
well as a pension scheme,
private health care, insurance
and other benefits like this.
(Such as how they have
mental health support to
ensure that your wellbeing is
looked after.) They then state
how they offer social events
such as drinks on Fridays with
you coworkers and free
breakfasts on Monday and
Wednesday. They then finish
off the information on the
job posting by showing off
the fact they have state of
the art offices which is most
likely another incentive so
that you apply for them.
4. This is a job posting by the BBC which is for a position as Production
Manager in their Documentary Unit. It is a job with a fixed term contract
meaning that you will only be contracted to work there for a certain
amount of time however there is chance your contract could get
extended by the company due to good performance or simply because
they want to keep you on as an employee. It is hybrid remote like the job
listing above meaning you will be working both from home and from the
office
At the beginning of the
job description the BBC
introduces the job to
the potential applicant
by talking about the unit
that they would be
working in given they
got the job, talking
about differenet
products that have been
made by the unit such
as The Met – Policing
London and Undercover
Police. They introduce
the job role by talking
about the position they
are looking for and a
generalised description
of what you would be
doing ('You will be
responsible for the day
to day running of the
department.') They
begin listing the
different responsibilities
you will have such as
forward planning,
budgeting, staffing
forms, etc. They
mention about the fact
that they are committed
to diversity as well
meaning anyone with
the right qualifications
and expeiernce will be
in the running for the
job regardless of their
background.
In this section the company talks about what your main jobs would be if you were given the job which would be
overseeing shoots, writing budgets and creating schedules. As well as this, in this position if I were to get it , I
would be expected to be able to work with others well as I would need to be looking for different available ways
to get funding as well as having to make phone calls to many people about things such as deadlines, delivery
dates and just generally overseeing what employees/colleagues are doing and ensuring you're giving them the
correct support. In the role you will be expected to be able to stay calm and collected in all situation, you must be
organized, and you must be focused as you will be a driving force within the company's production process.
In this section they go
into more detail
about the fact that
the position is
temporary, such as
how the job is within
band D which is in
reference to the pay
band you will be in so
you will be making
between £27,600 a
year and £37,600 a
year. As well as this it
mentions that the
contract you would
be under would be
twelve months long
meaning you would
be in London for this
job for a year. Finally,
they give a little more
information on the
benefits you will get
from this job such as
the training you will
receive during the
job, opportunities you
will have to develop
your skills in the
position as well as the
benefits you get from
this job such as the
flexibility you will
have with your hours
and the holidays you
In this section of the job description the employer speaks in detail about what they are looking for in potential workers such as how they are looking for someone
who has had experience working within a busy work environment. As well as this they want someone who had experience in production. The BBC are looking for
someone who is good with problem solving, someone who can be persuasive as in this position you would be in charge of budgets so you would have to persuade
people to change their ideas to ones that are more financially responsible such as people saying they want to ride Ferraris in Italy, you would have to persuade
them to driving a cheaper car somewhere more local. They also need someone who understood how to deliver to a range of people (including rights and complex
deliverables.) They also aim to find someone who is good at project managing and can prove they have experience helping deliver large scale projects as well as
having a proven track record for being organized and responsible in a fast paces environment.
5. Similarly, to the position that the BBC are offering, this job is based in London which is most likely because most of the well-known companies of this field are based in
the capital of the country.
This position is for the Sunday
Mirror as a new reporter
however they seem to be using a
separate company when looking
for the person to fill this position
as the company who put out the
advert is called Reach. The
position is a full-time position
meaning you would be working at
least 35 hours a week.
Within the job description, the
company show off the awards
they have won over the years
as a way of selling the company
to you. They then move on to
giving a brief description of
what they want in an employee
which is someone who is
committed and determined as
the job will require the person
to help come up ideas for new
stories for the paper. As well as
this, they mention that they
strive for diversity which
implies that applicants won't
have to worry about
discrimination from the
company during interviews and
working there. As well as this,
the company give us an
overview of who they are as a
company where they also seem
to be bragging as they mention
the figures of their monthly
readers as well as the different
titles that they are the 'home
of'
The company gives a brief introduction to what
will be involved with this position such as how
you will be trusted to write find stories as well
as researching for them and writing them. You
will also have to ensure that your byline
appears on your work (as well as be intuitive,
have sound judgement as well as a high level of
'reporting skills' which suggests they may be
looking for someone with experience.
From there they then move on to talk about
what they deem is an ideal candidate for the
position. They are looking for someone with
experience in reporting at a senior level as
well as having a track record of breaking
nation exclusives. They also are looking for
someone who has ideas to bring to the
company as well as someone who is
naturally curious as well as someone who is
determined to try their hardest at securing
exclusives with people who are at the 'heart'
of the biggest stories across the world. They
need someone who is flexible as the job
requires people who will be able to cover
stories whenever and wherever they
happen. You must have initiative when it
comes to this job, always looking for the
newest and best stories available at the
time. As well as this they want you to be
flexible with the genres of news you will
cover as they would like you to be able to
cover all aspects of the world from crime to
showbiz and politics. You also must comply
with the journalistic code of ethics as well as
the IPSO guidelines and the editors code of
practice.
To end the job description the company then moves onto describing what the benefits would be when ti comes to working with them. These range all the way from a
retirement plan that will be put in place for you, a good number of days for holidays, family leave, private healthcare as well as many others. They then finish off with stating
one of their values as a company which is that they believe that diversity brings benefits for everyone hence why they claim to be committed to encouraging people from all
backgrounds to apply to their positions.
6. I chose this job role to analyze as it is one of the jobs available to people who want to do more freelance work than anything else as this is one of the
routes, I may end up going down in the future If I feel I would be more suited as a freelancer. This job role was put on Indeed by a company called Rehab 4
Addiction and although it is based in Chester the actual job is remote so you would be able to do it from pretty much anywhere in the UK.
Although the job
description is fairly short,
they cover the information
you would have to know
given you were going to be
working for them such as
your potential salary and
what they are looking for in
a potential writer. They
claim to pay about £15 an
hour to their writers and
even though this is
freelance work they require
you to have a bachelor's
degree although they don’t
have a preference about
what degree it is, as well as
this they also want
someone who has two years
or more experience with
web content writing. They
also need you to be from
within the United Kingdom
seeing as this is where they
are based as a company
which does limit you a bit
on where you can live.
Unlike
other
freelance
positions
available
this job is
completely
home
based so
you will
not have
to go into
the office
a few
times a
year like
you would
have to for
other
companies
.
The company also explains how their pay works, as they do not pay their employees by the hour but instead by their word count. They
pay 2p per each word you write meaning that if you wrote 2000 words for an article you would end up getting paid £40 for writing
that article which is not bad for a freelancer as the average is lower than this.
7. This is a position found on Glassdoor where a company called KFM
Capital Limited who are based in Manchester are looking for someone to
fill the role of "Content Writer." On this website they also outwardly
state the annual income they think you will be getting from this job
which would be 21K a year.
In the listed job
description, the
company start by
stating the
responsibilities you
would have given you
were successful in your
application which
would be to do market
research into related
topics to what you are
working on, you would
be expected to be able
to write a clear
marketing copy to help
promote the company's
products. As well as this
you are expected to be
able to proofread your
work before
publication, coordinate
with other teams to
write articles, promote
content on the
company's social media,
identify the customer
and what their wants
and needs are and how
you will be able to fill
these. You are also
expected to make sure
that social media posts
are consistent in their
style and update the
website regularly when
new content needs to
The employer then moves on to listing the different things they are going to be looking for in a worker. They are looking for people who have proof of experience in a role similar to the
one they are advertising, a portfolio of articles you have publishes, experience with doing market and subject research, someone who is familiar with social media functions as well as web
publications and software they use (such as WordPress.) They also want someone who is good with academic writing and can write well as well as being able to edit your own work and
other peoples work in either English or Chinese.
For this job you are also required to have a degree in English, marketing or journalism as well as
someone who is good with time management as you will be expected to meet given deadlines
regularly.
This is not mentioned earlier in the job description
however, as expected the job is a full-time job and you
will be under contract within this tole. They also repeat
the fact that you will be getting £21,000 a year if you
get this job.
They then finish off the job description by adding on
the fact that they want someone who has two years'
worth of experience with content writing even though
this should be in requirements. However, they also add
on that because of Covid the job will be remote
temporarily.
8. What skills I need to improve/Common skills needed for these roles.
