Granada Seminar (15-‐19 June 2015). Physics Meets the Social Sciences. We present the citizen science projects we have been running during the past 3 years. We have adopted the idea of running collective experiments in public spaces of Barcelona to create crowd-sourced data atainning to concrete questions. We have been focussed on non‐permanent or pop-up experiments on 1. human mobility through voluntary tracking. In a park (Science Festival) and in an exhibition room (museum). 2. human decision making through games, as a complementary approach through three different games (Board Game Festival in Barcelona). Such data sources have allowed us to develop some stochastic models on human behaviour under concrete situations or circumstances. We critically analyse them and extract experience‐based conclusions from both a methodological and conceptual perspective.

In situations of a critical disease outbreak, any time delay in identifying the pathogen can prove to be risky and has its far-reaching effects on public health systems. There is a need for pathogenic bacteria detection at the point‐of‐care (POC) using a fast, sensitive, inexpensive, and easy‐to‐use method that does not require complex infrastructure and well‐trained technicians. For instance, detection of pneumonia, tuberculosis at acute infection stage has been challenging, since current antibody‐based POC technologies are not effective due to low concentration of antibodies. In this study, we demonstrated for the first time a label‐free electrical sensing method that can detect pathogenic bacteria, through MEMS cantilever technology. The presented method offers a rapid and portable tool that is MEMS biosensor, can be used as a bacteria detection technology at the hospital and primary care settings.

As the advance of technology, the manufacturing process of materials has moved forward from the scale of micrometer to sub-micrometer and nanometer. Combining nanotechnology and traditional magnetic materials, nanoscale magnetic materials can be created for applications in biomedical examination and therapy as well as data recording to increase the storage space of a computer. The topic of using the magnetic force microscope (MFM) to exam a material’s magnetic field distribution can often be found in nanotechnology courses. Due to the cost of equipment and difficulty of its operation, the teacher can only teach students with an instructional video most of the time instead of using a real MFM to conduct experiments. As a result, students may not fully understand its principle and operating procedure. In this study, a virtual MFM laboratory was designed as an app for execution on tablet computers to increase students’ learning interest and motivation. Without using expensive equipment, they can understand the magnetic field distribution of materials by using the virtual MFM to examine different samples provided in the virtual laboratory. A teaching experiment was also conducted to compare the learning effectiveness of using an instructional video and the virtual MFM laboratory. The experimental results showed that using the virtual MFM laboratory was more effective than using the instructional video; the questionnaire results also revealed that most students had positive attitudes toward the virtual MFM laboratory and they thought it could enhance their learning interest and motivation.
