“Last year I threw down the gauntlet to [BHL staff] and asked if
there was any possibility of BHL arranging to have made available
the entire run of the UK periodical The Gardeners' Chronicle. I
asked because there is nowhere in my country of residence
(Denmark) that holds it, requiring that I make time consuming and
expensive research trips to London or Cambridge in the UK should I
wish to examine the periodical. I was amazed and delighted that
BHL has achieved what I asked. This contribution to the BHL
catalogue has been a real boon to my research.”

Lecturer, Danish Institute for Study Abroad

It also provides full transcriptions of
his annotations and marks. These
works provide important insight into
the development of Darwin’s ideas
on evolution and natural selection.
"If this were true, adios theory"
Charles Darwin wrote these words in
response to reading Principles of
Geology, v. 2 (1837) by Charles
Lyell, who was arguing that changes
in species have limitations. Darwin,
on the other hand, argued that
changes in species are infinite and
continuous, an integral concept
crucial to his theory of evolution.

Engagement
BHL is used in exhibitions in our
partner institutions, such as “Once
There Were Billions” at the National
Museum of Natural History.
“BHL came to the rescue when a planned trip to
work in the Mertz Library at The New York
Botanical Garden had to be cancelled due to
Hurricane Sandy. Thanks to the online resources
available through BHL I was able to source most of
the key works I needed, with their supporting
bibliographic information.”

BHL strives to be part of that larger "Biodiversity
Commons" and provide a space for the literature
of biodiversity to be available such that ...
By engaging with the larger biodiversity
community and major stakeholder
institutions, BHL is creating a
sustainable biodiversity commons for
the literature of taxonomy.
The Commons succeeds when, among
other elements, there is "the presence
of a community; small and stable
populations with a thick social
network and social norms".
BHL has created that community among
our natural history and botanical libraries

  • 10. “Last year I threw down the gauntlet to [BHL staff] and asked if there was any possibility of BHL arranging to have made available the entire run of the UK periodical The Gardeners' Chronicle. I asked because there is nowhere in my country of residence (Denmark) that holds it, requiring that I make time consuming and expensive research trips to London or Cambridge in the UK should I wish to examine the periodical. I was amazed and delighted that BHL has achieved what I asked. This contribution to the BHL catalogue has been a real boon to my research.” Dr. Toby Musgrave Horticulturalist & Botanist Lecturer, Danish Institute for Study Abroad BHL Content

  • 16. Charles Darwin’s Library biodiversitylibrary.org/browse/collection/darwi nlibrary ___________________ A digital edition and virtual reconstruction of the surviving books owned by Charles Darwin. It also provides full transcriptions of his annotations and marks. These works provide important insight into the development of Darwin’s ideas on evolution and natural selection. "If this were true, adios theory" Charles Darwin wrote these words in response to reading Principles of Geology, v. 2 (1837) by Charles Lyell, who was arguing that changes in species have limitations. Darwin, on the other hand, argued that changes in species are infinite and continuous, an integral concept crucial to his theory of evolution.

  4. To date, BHL’s collections include over 50 million pages, which comprise over 113,000 titles and over 192,000 volumes. Another major service that BHL provides is taxonomic name recognition. Our primary audience is scientists and taxonomists, who are especially interested in locating material related to specific species or taxa. Using Global Names recognition and discovery tools and services powered by Global Names Architecture, BHL indexes the scientific names on the pages in the books in our collections and then allows users to search on those names to find content of interest. By searching on a taxonomic name in BHL, users can retrieve a bibliography listing all mentions of that name throughout BHL’s collections. To date, we’ve indexed over 172 million instances of taxonomic names throughout the collection. As previously mentioned, we also work with rights holders to secure permission to digitize in-copyright content in BHL. To date, we’ve received permission for over 550 in-copyright titles, amounting to agreements with over 240 licensors.
  5. BHL also collaborates with and contributes content to a wide variety of partners. As mentioned, BHL is a long-time partner with EOL. In addition to contributing tagged images to EOL, BHL also contributes literature references to EOL species pages, and the taxonomic names in BHL are linked to the related EOL species pages. BHL is also an Associate Participant in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), an Associate Member of International Council for Scientific & Technical Information (ICSTI), and a Member of TDWG (Taxonomic Database Working Group). Additionally, BHL contributes content to Europeana and is a digital content hub for the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA).
  6. BHL is also currently engaged in several grant-funded projects. The first, the Biodiversity Heritage Library Field Notes Project, is a collaborative effort to digitize field notes, assign metadata, and publish online through BHL and Internet Archive. The project is funded by a two-year, 491,713 USD Digitizing Hidden Special Collections and Archives grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR).
  7. Another grant-funded field notes project currently underway is the Smithsonian Field Book Project, which is currently funded by a two-year, 511,200 USD award from the Arcadia Foundation (UK). The project was initiated with funding from the Council on Library and Information Resources and previously supported by Smithsonian Women’s Committee, and the National Park Service’s Save America’s Treasures. The project is working to catalog, conserve, and digitize scientists’ field notes from the collections of the Smithsonian. Content will be made available through the Smithsonian’s Collection Search Center, BHL, and aggregator sites like Internet Archive and DPLA.
  8. Another current project is Expanding Access to Biodiversity Literature, which is helping libraries, museums, and natural history societies make their content more widely available by providing the tools and support necessary to facilitate contribution to the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) through BHL. It is a two-year award for 846,457 USD funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in 2015 as part of the National Leadership Grants for Libraries program. To date, the project has digitized 3,535 volumes and secured permission for 106 new in-copyright titles from 54 contributors.
  9. The Foundations to Actions: Extending Innovations in Digital Libraries in Partnership with NDSR Learners is a digital stewardship residency program funded by the Institute of Museum of Library Services for two years at $370,756. The program will fund five residents with with geographically-distributed BHL partners to plan and develop a next generation digital library using BHL as a test-bed. The outcomes will include a best practices document on incorporating transcriptions and image search, collection analysis, a user priorities study, and improved connections to museums, archives, and data providers. The lead institution on the program is the Ernst Mayr Library at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University. Other participating institutions include the Chicago Botanic Garden, Missouri Botanical Garden, Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, and Smithsonian Libraries.
  10. One of BHL’s most popular social media sites is our Flickr. Our collections are filled with millions of stunning scientific illustrations. In order to make it easier to users to explore these images, we make them available in Flickr. To date, we have over 109,000 images in Flickr, and these images have been viewed over 218 million times. Flickr also provides a citizen science opportunity for us. In order to make the images more discoverable, we ask our community to add tags to these images that indicate the species depicted. To date, over 31,000 images have been tagged by volunteers, amounting to 28% of the total Flickr collection. These tags not only mean that users can search for images of specific species, but they also allow us to share these resources with other databases – for instance, the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL). EOL is an online encyclopedia dedicated to creating a web page for every species. BHL has partnered with EOL since the beginning of our library. One of the ways that we share content with EOL is through these image tagging activities. EOL automatically ingests any images in the BHL Flickr that have been tagged with a scientific name machine tag and associates them with the corresponding species page in EOL. To date, over 18,000 of our tagged images have been ingested into EOL. This allows our resources to be exposed to a whole new audience through EOL, and also enhances EOL with rich visual content. We encourage you to check out our Flickr at flickr.com/biodivlibrary – after all, in 2015 Wired listed it as one of the 27 must-follow feeds in the world of science.
  11. We are also very active on social media, with a presence on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Flickr, Instagram, and a blog. Across our channels, our handle is BioDivLibrary, so we encourage you to follow our accounts to learn more about our amazing collections, stay up to date with news and developments, learn more about our tools and services, and discover how BHL supports science and research around the world.
