A challenging goal today is the use of computer networking and advanced monitoring technologies to extend human intellectual capabilities in medical decision making. Modern commercial eye trackers are used in many of research fields, but the improvement of eye tracking technology, in terms of precision on the eye movements capture, has led to consider the eye tracker as a tool for vision analysis, so that its application in medical research, e.g. in ophthalmology, cognitive psychology and in neuroscience has grown considerably. The improvements of the human eye tracker interface become more and more important to allow medical doctors to increase their diagnosis capacity, especially if the interface allows them to remotely administer the clinical tests more appropriate for the problem at hand. In this paper, we propose a client/server eye tracking system that provides an interactive system for monitoring patients eye movements depending on the clinical test administered by the medical doctors. The system supports the retrieval of the gaze information and provides statistics to both medical research and disease diagnosis.

Masayo Takahashi received her M.D. in 1986, and her Ph.D. in 1992 from Kyoto University. After an assistant professorship in the Department of Ophthalmology, Kyoto University Hospital, she moved to the Salk Institute in 1995, where she discovered the potential of stem cells as a tool for retinal therapy. She returned to Kyoto University Hospital in 1997, and was appointed associate professor at the Translational Research Center in the same hospital in 2001. She joined the RIKEN as a team leader of the Lab for Retinal Regeneration in 2006. In 2013, her team launched a pilot clinical study of autologous iPS cell-derived RPE cell sheets for exudative aged-related macular degeneration (AMD), and performed the first RPE cell sheet graft transplantation in Sept. 2014. In 2017, the team started using allogeneic iPS cells suspension in the clinical study.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging aids in retinal abnormality detection by showing the tomographic retinal layers. OCT images are a useful tool for detecting Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) disease because of their capability to capture micrometer-resolution. An automated technique was introduced to differentiate DR images from normal ones. 214 images were subjected to the experiment, of which 160 images were used for classifiers’ training, and 54 images were used for testing. Different features were extracted to feed our classifiers, including statistical features and local binary pattern (LBP) features. The experimental results demonstrated that our classifiers were able to discriminate DR retina from the normal retina with Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve (AUC) of 100%. The retinal OCT images have common texture patterns and using a powerful tool for pattern analysis like LBP features has a significant impact on the achieved results. The result has better performance than previously proposed methods in the literature.

Glaucoma is a well-known complex disease of the optic nerve that gradually damages eyesight due to the increase of intraocular pressure inside the eyes. Among two types of glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma is mostly happened by high intraocular pressure and can damage the eyes temporarily or sometimes permanently, another one is angle-closure glaucoma. Therefore, being diagnosed in the early stage is necessary to safe our vision. There are several ways to detect glaucomatous eyes like tonometry, perimetry, and gonioscopy but require time and expertise. Using deep learning approaches could be a better solution. This study focused on the recognition of open-angle affected eyes from the fundus images using deep learning techniques. The study evolved by applying VGG16, VGG19, and ResNet50 deep neural network architectures for classifying glaucoma positive and negative eyes. The experiment was executed on a public dataset collected from Kaggle; however, every model performed better after augmenting the dataset, and the accuracy was between 93% and 97.56%. Among the three models, VGG19 achieved the highest accuracy at 97.56%.

Glaucoma is a serious eye disease, overtime it will result in gradual blindness. Early detection of thedisease will help prevent against developing a more serious condition. A vertical cup-to-disc ratio which isthe ratio of the vertical diameter of the optic cup to that of the optic disc, of the fundus eye image is an important clinical indicator for glaucoma diagnosis. This paper presents an automated method for the extraction of optic disc and optic cup using Fuzzy C Means clustering technique combined with thresholding. Using the extracted optic disc and optic cup the vertical cup-to-disc ratio was calculated. The validity of this new method has been tested on 365 colour fundus images from two different publicly available databases DRION, DIARATDB0 and images from an ophthalmologist. The result of the method seems to be promising and useful for clinical work.

Sustainable Diabetic Mellitus may lead to several complications towards patients. One of the complications is diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is the type of complication towards the retinal and interferes with patient’s sight. Medical examination toward patients with diabetic retinopathy is observed directly through retinal images using fundus camera. Diabetic retinopathy is classified into four classes based on severity, which are: normal, non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), and macular edema (ME). The aim of this research is to develop a method which can be used to classify the level of severity of diabetic retinopathy based on patient’s retinal images. Seven texture features were extracted from retinal images using gray level co-occurence matrix three dimensional method (3D-GLCM). These features are maximum probability, correlation, contrast, energy, homogeneity, and entropy; subsequently trained using Levenberg-Marquardt Backpropagation Neural Network (LMBP). This study used 600 data of patient’s retinal images, consist of 450 data retinal images for training and 150 data retinal images for testing. Based on the result of this test, the method can classify the severity of diabetic retinopathy with sensitivity of 97.37%, specificity of 75% and accuracy of 91.67%

Retina is main part of the human eye and every disease shows the effect on retina. Eye diseases such as choroidal neovascularization (CNV), DRUSEN, diabetic macular edema (DME) are the main retinal diseases that damage the retina and if these damages are identified in the later stages, it is very difficult to reverse the vision for these retinal diseases. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-nosy image testing for finding the retinal diseases. OCT mainly collects the cross-section images of retina. Deep learning (DL) is used to analyze the patterns in several complex research applications especially in the disease prediction. In DL, multiple layers give the accurate detection of abnormalities in the retinal images. In this paper, an improved dynamic-layered classification (IDLC) is introduced to classify retinal diseases based on their abnormality. Image filters are used to filter the noise present in the input images. ResNet is the pre-trained model which is used to train the features of retinal diseases. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) are the DL model used to analyze the OCT image. The dataset consists of three types of OCT disease datasets from Kaggle. Evaluation results show the performance of IDLC compared with state-of-art algorithms. A better performance is obtained by using the IDLC and achieved the better accuracy.

Glaucoma is the most leading cause of irreversible blindness with the population of Africa and Asia ranking the highest over the rate of glaucoma affected regions around the world. The defect will damage eyes irreversibly by affecting the optic cup and optic disc of an eye. The early detection of glaucoma is an unavoidable need in the medical field. The widely used technique to detect glaucoma is an invasive method that may lead to other effects on the eye. This reason led to the introduction of a non invasive method that follows image processing for the detection of glaucoma. Retinal image based detection is the best way to choose as it comes under non invasive methods of detection. Detection of glaucoma using retinal images requires various medical features of the eyes such as optic cup diameter, optic disc diameter and optic cup to disc ratio are used. Glaucoma disease detection from retinal images supports convolutional neural networks CNN . The textual features obtained from retinal images such as the optic cup to optic disc measures are used for this classification. Convolutional Neural Networks use little pre processing techniques that can be implemented relatively uncomplicated compared to other image classification techniques. The implementation of this project follows the traditional CNN architecture, applying filter layers such as Convolution layer and Pooling layer and also activation functions such as ReLu function and sigmoid function to pre process as well as to update weights respectively on the hidden layers of the CNN followed by classifying the image. PURPOSE: To study the composition of corneal astigmatism in older adults, evaluating the difference made by the inclusion of posterior corneal astigmatism in a ray tracing calculation of total corneal astigmatism. SETTING: Ophthalmology clinic. METHODS: One hundred consecutive patients aged between 60 and 80 years were included in a prospective descriptive study. Their right eye was analysed by an integrated Placido disk and rotating Scheimpflug camera topographer (CSOTM Sirius). Several parameters were measured: anterior corneal astigmatism (ACA) and posterior corneal astigmatism (PCA), total astigmatism based on anterior topographic data (simK) and total corneal astigmatism (TCA) by merging anterior and posterior astigmatism using ray tracing. RESULTS: Mean ACA was 1.51 diopters (D) and PCA was 0.38D. ACA was aligned 47% with-the-rule and PCA 87% against-the-rule. Cases with against-the-rule ACA showed low magnitude correlation between anterior and posterior surfaces. TCA had a mean deviation of 0.30D @ 3 over SimK in a vector calculation. Eighteen percent (18%) of cases differed by 0.50 D or more between SimK and TCA magnitude, and 53% had 10 or more degrees of axis discrepancy, the difference being higher at lower magnitudes of astigmatism. CONCLUSIONS: Anterior WTR astigmatism tends to be compensated by posterior ATR astigmatism in older patients. Nevertheless, the high number of cases largely justifies the use of tomographic technology that takes into account the posterior corneal surface for managing individual total corneal astigmatism.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the retinal diseases due to long-term effect of diabetes. Early detection for diabetic retinopathy is crucial since timely treatment can prevent progressive loss of vision. The most common diagnosis technique of diabetic retinopathy is to screen abnormalities through retinal fundus images by clinicians. However, limited number of well-trained clinicians increase the possibilities of misdiagnosing. In this work, we propose a big-data-driven automatic computer-aided diagnosing (CAD) system for diabetic retinopathy severity regression based on transfer learning, which starts from a deep convolutional neural network pre-trained on generic images, and adapts it to large-scale DR datasets. From images in the training set, we also automatically segment the abnormal patches with an occlusion test, and model the transformations and deterioration process of DR. Our results can be widely used for fast diagnosis of DR, medical education and public-level healthcare propagation.

Discovering Abnormal Patches and Transformations of Diabetics Retinopathy in ...

Discovering Abnormal Patches and Transformations of Diabetics Retinopathy in ...

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the retinal diseases due to long-term effect of diabetes.Early detection for diabetic retinopathy is crucial since timely treatment can prevent progressive loss of vision. The most common diagnosis technique of diabetic retinopathy is to screen abnormalities through retinal fundus images by clinicians. However, limited number of well-trained clinicians increase the possibilities of misdiagnosing. In this work, we propose a big-data-driven automatic computer-aided diagnosing (CAD) system for diabetic retinopathy severity regression based on transfer learning, which starts from a deep convolutional neural network pre-trained on generic images, and adapts it to large-scale DR datasets. From images in the training set, we also automatically segment the abnormal patches with an occlusion test,and model the transformations and deterioration process of DR. Our results can be widely used for fast diagnosis of DR, medical education and public-level healthcare propagation.
