Headline:

Work Performance Review

Situation:

A private dinner between old work colleagues. Conversations held at that dinner were talked about
by a new member of the group to her friends at work.

A topic talked at great length over dinner was the management style of a Deputy Branch Manager.
This conversation unfortunately was retold to that Manager.

As the conversation was held at a private function, the Deputy Branch Manager was unable to discuss
the topic at that dinner, as retold to her, however in her capacity as Deputy Branch Manager she
decided to may me answerable to a Work Performance Review.

There was a panel involved, HR Manager, Deputy Branch Manager, State Manager, a staff member of
my choice and myself.

At this Review it was pointed out that I had made typing errors in a draft document. I was asked to
verify that the errors were made by me. I did so, and was told that this would go on my work record
and would serve as a warning.

My reply to the panel was that I did not accept the warning as the errors were made in a draft
document and drafts are checked by each manager before distribution.

Impact:

My respect for the Deputy Branch Manager was compromised.

My trust in the new member of the group that attended dinner with me was severed.

It was very obvious why the Work Performance Review was held and I think it was a reflection of the
poor management style of the Deputy Branch Manager to have taken such a harsh measurer on a
conversation retold to her third hand.

I acknowledged the warning and ensured that it stated it was not accepted in anyway by me.

Reflections:

It was important to me to retell this story, because it could have changed my whole career path. If I
was not strong enough to stand my ground and allowed myself to be intimidated by a bully I would
be out of a job.

Learnings:

I would change nothing. As I did not add to the fuel, I stayed calm and allowed the process to take
it’s course.

I was told at a later date, that I won an important battle.
