3. DEFINITION:
Pyogenic granuloma is a smooth or lobulated
exophytic lesion manifesting as small, red
erythematous papules on a pedunculated or
sometimes sessile base.
Also known as “Pregnancy Tumor” as it’s common
in pregnant women.

4. CAUSES:
External injury or trauma to the gums.
Poor oral hygiene.
Hormonal imbalance in the body.
Inflammation around a dental implant.
Long term irritation to the gums from an
overhanging restoration or calculus.

5. CLINICAL FEATURES:
Occurs mostly in 2nd decade of life.
Females are more susceptible than males.

7. Histopathology:
1.Pyogenic granuloma is composed of granulation
tissue typified by a plethora of anastomosing
endothelial lined vascular channels engorged with
erythrocytes and nodules of endothelial cells in
medullary patterns.
2.The endothelial cells are usually plump and
vesicular indicating active proliferation.
3.Loose connective tissue dispersed throughout the
fibrovascular tissue and is infiltered predominantly
by neutrophils and histiocytes.

8. TREATMENT:
Topical medications to shrink pyogenic granuloma
includes:
Chemicals such as Silver Nitrate.
Steroid injections into the lesion.
Surgical Procedures that can remove granuloma includes:
Curettage, to scrape it away.
Laser treatment to destroy the abnormal tissue.
Surgical excision, to cut the granuloma out of your skin.

11. Possible UQ’s Of Pyogenic granuloma:
Enlist etiological, clinical and histopathological features of Pyogenic
granuloma.(Most repeated UHS question)

gingival margin of left lateral Incisor and canine.
1.What is your differential diagnosis?
Ans: Pyogenic granuloma
