2. HEARING WI-FI
Wi-Fi fields are audible with human ears. This ability is not a feat of genetic mutation,
X-Men remains fantastical. It is the result of the experimental hearing aid Phantom
Terrains. Hearing continuous streams of data fuelling the Internet of Things could be
another platform for human sensory engagement with technology.

STORE SERVER AT HOME FOR FREE HEAT
Servers emit a lot of excess heat and cloud infrastructure companies expend resources
to cool them. Making productive use of the waste heat by repurposing it is a practical
implementation for Cloud&Heat, a cloud company in Germany. The company
distributes servers to people willing to keep them. The servers are secured in a fire-proof
cabinet while stored within homes or offices and owners get free heating and hot
water in exchange, from heat generated by the server cabinet.

3. OFFICE CHAIR OF THE FUTURE
Many mundane functions physically performed by humans will be taken over by
technology eventually, rendering our bodies increasingly useless. To keep
humans healthy and active, a Dutch designer used motion-sensors to introduce
movements to the chair. Seated on this chair in front of a computer getting work
done is a physical activity, one has to move the body to move the cursor.

BRAIN CONTROLS WHEELCHAIR
Monkeys that had electrodes implanted in their brains were trained to
steered a wheelchair with the use of thought. Success of this research
contributes to the development of "brain pacemaker" implant, which
should be able to pick up clearer signals from the brain to help control
robotic prosthetics in the future. This break though in brain-machine
interfaces offers hope for humans with paralysis and spinal cord injuries.

4. WEARABLE AIR POLLUTION MONITOR
Air pollution is a major source of health hazard in cities but government-run air quality
network are often lacking in assessing personal exposure. AirCasting is an open-source
platform comprising of wearable sensors and digital media for users to independently
and accurately collect and share air quality data using through a smart phone.
Included in the platform is AirBeam, a wearable palm size Arduino-based air quality
monitor that maps, graphs & crowdsources pollution exposures in real-time. The
individual is thus empowered by accurate data to take necessary health precautions.
SALT + WATER POWER LAMPS
Millions of people in poverty live without electricity in the Philippines. Chemistry has
provided a simple and affordable solution: salt dissolved in water lights up an LED
bulb. The scientific basis of this discovery is that different metals submerged in
electrolytes produces electricity. The founders of start-up ‘SALt’ is now on a mission
to bring light to poor families off-grid in the Philippines and beyond with this
solution. Life does not have to stop after dark for them.
