Relationships
When we think about our relationships to people we often use closeness and
distance to describe our connection to other people. Когда мы говорим об

More distant closer
Friendship: acquaintance знакомый; friend друг; good friend хороший друг;
best friend лучший друг.
Work: colleague/workmate коллега; close colleague близкий коллег;
Romance: ex бывший; someone in seeing/dating кто-то с кем встречаюсь;
steady boy/girlfriend постоянный парень/девушка; lover любимый.
Marriage: ex бывший; partner сожитель; wife/husband жена/муж.

2. Mate is a word for a good friend, but it can also be used in compound words
to describe a person you share something with - хороший друг, используется

The stress is always on the first word in each case. Ударение всегда на первый
слог.
Fiancé/fiancee is still used to speak of someone you are engaged to, or have
plans to marry, although many English speakers no longer use this word as it

English has no universal word for 'someone you live with but are not married
to' but partner is probably the most common. Partner is also commonly used
in gay/lesbian couples.
