9. Responding to new threat to services health
visitors can provide to families
What is the threat? – since end of call to action have already lost over 900 FTE
health visitors. 56% of Directors of Public Health expect further cuts in 2017.
With no intervention could lose all increase to workforce that have gained
since 2012. Only real solution is reinvestment into public health (with ring
fencing!) – Treasury/Cabinet decision.
State of Health Visiting Survey launched today (n = 1228):
• 16% have responsibility for 500-1000 families
• Only 30% can provide antenatal visits to all parents
• Only 5% can offer continuity of care all the time and 55% most of the time
• 75-80% report an increase in DVA and perinatal mental illness past 2 years
• 25% of Health Visitors feel their time is spread too thinly to make much
difference
