 We often call these phrasal verbs. It is usually difficult to guess the
meaning of the parts alone.
 A good dictionary will help you. For example,

do very Little “waiting”; nor do they do anything “on” people.
To wait on means to serve people food.)

follow the verb. But if the woeds that separates the verb from the participle is a pronoun, the
participle must move to a position after the pronoun.
 Separable phrasal verb: turn on
 (a) She turned on the light. OR
 (b) She turned the light on.
 (c) She turned it on.
Not: she turned on it

(f) He cleaned it up
Not : He cleaned up it
FORM – MEANING Separable and inseparable Phrasal Verbs
 It is difficult to guess whether phrasal verbs are separable or inseparable; this is
something that you will need to learn gradually.
 Even if a pronoun is used with an inseparable phrasal verb, the verb and the
participle stay together.
 Inseparable phrasal verb: run into
 (g) Yesterday I ran into my friend Sal. OR
 (h) Yesterday I ran into her
NOT: Yesterday I ran my friend Sal into
